Is it still the plan to make a new edition for next year?

Hi there. Our apologies — it looks like we forgot to share the news here once we'd announced it on Twitter.

Unfortunately, for various reasons, we won't be going ahead with Issue 2 of the zine. We're so grateful for the interest we've received, both in the original project and in the interest check we put out earlier this year. I'm sorry to share the sad news 🖤

After the wonderful success of our first digital issue, we are now starting the process of planning a SECOND ISSUE of FREEDOM IN THE DARK: A BLACK SAILS ZINE!

- We are aiming for release on 25 January 2024, which will coincide with the 10 year anniversary of the release of Black Sails!

- We are hoping to be able to produce both a digital and a physical version of the zine, with proceeds going to a chosen charity!

Please fill in our interest check! This will give us an idea of what you'd like to see from the second issue of our zine! None of our suggestions outlined here are set in stone so your feedback will be immensely helpful.

We can't wait to hear from you, pirates! We are all so excited to jump back into this project with renewed strength and hopefully celebrate Black Sails' 10th anniversary together! ☠️

Hey there! I absolutely love this zine, and some friends of mine are considering putting together something very similar for our DnD channel. Do you guys have any recommendations for software to use in terms of actually editing/formatting the zine into its finished product?

Hi, thank you for your message, and good luck with your project! Here's a message from our layout mod @dykebonny:

The zine layout was fully made in adobe indesign, with help from photoshop to recolor some existing graphic assets (eg the ships etc) I got from pixabay. I would say when making any layout the main thing to think about is cohesiveness. Content needs to flow together and work as a whole, and while page design is important, I like looking at the bigger picture (spreads and books) and thinking about how it works together as a finished piece. If you have any specific questions feel free to DM me @dykebonny on twitter and tumblr!

My full piece of Anne, Jack and Charles for @blacksailszine! (and closeups :D)

it was really really fun to draw them in such a lighthearted scene - the full zine features a gorgeous selection of fic, comics, art and meta about the entire show, and its free to download!! u can find it here

It was behind the bar, as Idelle felt ready to start her next shift, that she spotted a lonely man finishing a glass of expensive whiskey. His dark coat and jewellery spoke of big prizes, his poise signalled he remained more than sober enough not to become a nuisance or a danger, and the splash of unruly red hair falling into his eyes above a well-maintained beard and moustache made him easier on the eyes than three-quarters of the clientele.

Idelle was too new to the place to know the regulars, especially those men who came and went to the sea for long periods before their eager return to the comforts of the shore, so she didn’t find any concerning meaning in the fact that she couldn’t remember him passing through before. She only saw a potential client and she stood in attention, almost as if she was looking at a comically drawn bag of gold coins instead of at a man –albeit, that is, one with a more appealing package than most around him.

finally getting around to posting my piece for @blacksailszine​ (+details)!

i really just wanted to draw flint chilling the fuck out for once, and was heavily inspired by his cottage life in the fic Always in Season by mycapeisplaid on AO3 (which is absolutely lovely and you should read it).
