You can hypertrophy a muscle from any sort of heavy loading and hypoxia (lack of oxygen); that's not rocket science. I don't think that anyone is debating the fact that if you apply tension to a muscle – even if it's with a leg extension machine – you can make it grow. So, how often do you train the other side of your chest, you know, that large group of muscles known as the back? Unfortunately, the muscles of the back are like the fat girl at the Playboy mansion – ignored. It's the mighty pecs that get all the attention. Of course, those of us who have been in the business for any length of time know that if you ignore the back – or the fat girl – she'll strike back with a vengeance. In the case of the back, you'll create an imbalance between the back and chest that might come back and bite you in the form of multiple injuries. In the case of the fat girl... well, at worst, she'll spit in your food, but you get the picture. There are many traditions passed down in strength training and most of them are based on sound intuition. But in recent history, many of these traditions have been rudely discarded. In fact, when scientists got involved with strength training and bodybuilding, it seemed their sole purpose was to search out and destroy all traditions! Their motto seemed to be, "We know better, and until we can prove it, everyone else must be wrong!" This is epitomized by certain holders of advanced degrees who believe that every accepted tradition in strength training is a fallacy unless they invented it or confirmed its worth. Big Back, Big Deadlift ? I like rack deadlifts (aka rack pulls) for the upper back, but not for improving the deadlift specifically. People say it'll "fix your lockout" and make it less of a sticking point, but that's probably not accurate. If they actually did help, then the likely explanation is that you had a weak upper back and it limited your ability to stabilize the posterior chain. The great majority of folks get into a completely different position when doing rack or block pulls than what their body is in when pulling from the floor in that range of motion. And any variation of a main movement where you can use more than about 10% of your max load won't be all that transferable So why doesn't it work since it's intended to strengthen a sticking point? Newsflash: Training your sticking point at the sticking point itself is pointless. And that's a lot of points. The problem area isn't the sticking point itself. It's the few inches before the sticking point where you're not able to generate enough power (the speed at which you can move the load) to get through the sticking point. #DoTheMath For some reason, leg presses are regarded as a mediocre exercise with little direct application to sport. Here's the bottom line. If you're a professional athlete, then it's true, leg presses won't have much direct carryover to the athletic field. However, if you just want to pack muscle onto your legs, then the leg press is an important tool. By far, my favorite exercise in the world is barbell squats. They're the ultimate exercise for muscular hypertrophy. In fact they're so good for building leg size that it might be tempting for you to brush off other exercises that are extremely effective and label them as "second class." Specifically, I'm referring to the leg press. I think many have also avoided the leg press because it's not nearly as "functional" as the squat, but make no mistake, it still has many cool hypertrophy applications, especially for bodybuilders! The leg press is a beast of an exercise, too. You can use this machine to inflict pain like perhaps no other. If your goal is to gain muscle on your legs, this machine should be part of your regimen. We go into the gym and the mishmash of what we do is determined by what we feel like doing, or more likely, what we DON'T feel like doing. Here are some decidedly inconvenient truths about the way most of us train abs. 1 – Stop with the plank worship already. 2 – Training the abs won't make your waist-size smaller. 3 – You can't train the obliques like they're biceps. 4 – You can't train abs every day. 5 – Ab training by itself won't give you a washboard stomach. 6 – Cardio won't give you abs, either. 7 – Acquiring abs requires insulin sensitivity. 8 – Developing abs requires a multi-directional workout attack.
