Spn should have given us an episode where Dean, Sam, and Cas are all trying to tell a story about whatever happened before the episode. And Jack in an effort to practice the limitations of his powers either inspired by Gabriel or under his guidance, he let's his dads visually tell the story. So we the audience watch dramatic reenactments with each one taking a turn narrating. So we see Sam, Dean, and Cas recast according to how each one perceives the others.

Notably Dean makes Sam super short and Cas look like a stereotypical 80s movie NERD. Cas makes Sam incredibly random and nondescript because he doesn't pay him much mind and Dean is like a romance cover Fabio type. Everyone looks the same in Sam's version except his own hair is longer & he makes Dean and Cas act like an aggressively PDA couple.

I think we are now old enough and reformed enough to reconsider superwholock like crossovers. Like all the characters would HATE each other SO much. I really think we should consider the comedic potential here.

I really do think it’s interesting that Castiel’s dialogue throughout the course of the series implies that he rarely if ever interacted with Michael and Lucifer before their family began splintering apart. In season 15, he admits that he never liked Michael, finding him too haughty, and the implication is that Cas was not only a face in the crowd, but that he actively would have not wanted Michael attention even at that young age. In season 5, Castiel is visibly nervous that Lucifer even knows his name, and Lucifer’s mannerism supports the idea that even if he remembers Castiel from before his fall, it’s in a vague, unremarkable sense. 

By contrast, Raphael knows Castiel’s name offhand. You can make the argument that it’s because by this point, Cas has made himself such a nuisance that everyone knows who he is now, but then the way that Cas delivers the line “You never look like you’re joking” in season 6, he sounds so on point as an eye-rolling, tired sibling, it fosters this idea of a relationship between these two. 

Likewise, they imply a unique relationship with Gabriel too. Not necessarily when they see each other in season 4, but later. When Metatron briefly lulls Castiel into thinking that Gabriel is alive and, in a sense, coming to Heaven’s rescue. And Castiel’s rescue, because he feels so much guilt for everything that’s happened to his family. It all comes down to the sincere sadness in Castiel’s voice when he asks, “Are you really dead?” Even knowing that he isn’t actually talking to Gabe. He’s asking Metatron, who’s puppeting this fake Gabriel, and listening in. Who is his enemy at this point, is but also still his brother–and this is just me reading into things, but Castiel’s mannerism and the little smile that Metatron puts on the fake Gabriel’s face right after, both seem to imply that Metatron was just tugging on a very sensitive heartstring in this particular scheme, and that Metatron maybe even knows that it was a little extra cruel. 

And I’m not even building to anything here. I just really love this picture that was subtly painted of the dynamics of this huge, huge family. Where yes, Michael was the closest thing to a parent most of them had, but he was also the stuck up older brother, who if you’re going to bother him with something it damn well better be important. Lucifer was the cool older sibling with a bullet proof air of I-don’t-give-a-fuck around him so thick that no one expected him to know who they were–and were kind of relieved to think so after he came to a bad end. Which effectively left Raphael and Gabriel as the buffer siblings, both cleaning up and actively causing messes until the timebomb that was Michael and Lucifer’s unalterable “destiny” brought it all crashing down.

There was this cool post I found once that boiled down to: what if 15x18 was complicated by the fact that Dean subconsciously thought he and Cas were already together? That Dean was trying to be with Cas in any capacity he could have him?

That Dean could have thought that their bond—intimate but undefined—was something Cas chose to keep quiet, and out of respect, he followed suit… The status quo was enough to keep Cas in his life without scaring him off or crossing boundaries.

It reframes Dean’s actions not as emotional suppression or cluelessness, but as intentional respect for Cas. That Dean maybe is under the assumption that Cas gives to the relationship as much as he can already.

Anyway… If Dean had been operating under the assumption that Cas didn’t want their bond spoken aloud, 15x18 would be utterly world-shaking for him.

He would also get sooo much whiplash-clarity on Cas’s inflamed emotional distance post-Jack’s resurrection. Realized that perhaps there were even moments where Cas couldn’t bring himself to deepen their bond, knowing it would make leaving even harder for them both.

Cas’s love—unspoken and restrained—was maybe just as much an act of selflessness as Dean’s silence. Maybe that’s what sits between them. Dean would understand that Cas’s desire was never absent—it was restrained for the same reasons Dean’s was. Out of… love.

EDIT: Aside:// I mean, Dean also pulled away from Cas specifically with regards to his Ma’lak box plan. I think he’d understand why Cas did what he did. That the emotions were just too big. Cas made an intentional choice to remain composed for Dean. He may not be the most overtly affectionate or open partner, but his commitment and steady presence gave Dean the emotional stability and strength he so often needed. Cas wanted to be the rock for Dean, because Dean is that for so many others.
