This blog began as a page for Antic Shakespeare, a performance group at Duke University. It is now the host page for other dramaturgical sites and pages for other productions curated by Department of Theater Studies' Resident Dramaturg, Jules Odendahl-James.

So this is a response to Kara's observation that perhaps we've gone too far out of the way to reject the Young Woman's possible or very probable mental illness. Certainly given the time frame of the original script, Treadwell's own biographical connection to Helen and the problematic treatment of her own mental and physical complaints, I've been extremely reluctant to diagnose Helen in the abstract. Certainly her oversensitivity to the environment and her inability to sleep (or sleep well) is something that we would probably treat now with occupational therapies or biofeedback to try and calm physical reactions and feelings of panic. And certainly her story contains markers of depression, lack of strong ego formation, explosive anger/temper, and postpartum psychosis(?). I guess my "left unfinished" part of this play is looking at these symptoms more seriously in relationship to the structural components of everyday life and her specific life path. How much is one foundational for the other, how much does one feed the other, and where should the audience see the connection?
So ... work for next time. : )
It’s been a couple of days since our last performance, and it hasn’t quite sunk in that Machinal is over. I keep expecting next weekend to roll around and we’ll go, okay, time to do it again. That usually happens to me when a play ends, but this time it feels particularly...

Why no, I'm sure the 16th century armored soldiers just happened to be on their way somewhere to be captured in the carpark at the initiation of the excavation. Since Antic Shakespeare is now an officialDuke University student organization, it's time to pass off this blog to capable student hands. I hope you'll stay tuned for more Shakespeare tidbits and information about campus performances from the troupe. For now the new page http://anticshakesofficial.tumblr.com/ looks very similar but under new ownership there might be some artistic changes. Stay tuned!

"All of his plays are about how you live as human beings, in families, in society, in nations. Shakespeare's not pedantic and not telling you the right way to do something. He asks, 'what if?' and, 'now what?' and, 'how do you want the world to be?'"
