Not to focus overly on my Rookanis feels, but I love the dialogue cutscene where Lucanis and Davrin are drinking together, sharing stories, and invite Rook to sit with them, for so many reasons.
I mean, I love the dialogue cutscene in general and both the guys in it. The mood is great. The dialogue is just so damn funny. It's a friendly dick measuring contest between our favourite boys. After the initial antagonism and tension, they've become friends. There are bizarre lore drops. The stories are entertaining and frankly wtf? A big writhing ball of angry nugs? Created through blood magic? The stuff of nightmares! I wish I could see Lucanis deal with that. I wish I could see Davrin figure out the big heap of tentacles. I love the way the guys are just a little tipsy in a cute way. Lucanis talks a little too loud in comparison with what we're used to. Davrin is starting to have trouble articulating. The "Of course we're getting along. We're PROFESSIONALS," as Lucanis raises his cup a little towards Davrin always cracks me up. Also, Lucanis, are you drinking wine from a coffee cup? The way they both invite Rook to stay and participate. The prospect of slightly drunk cooking and snacking and sharing stories. All in all, it's a beautiful scene that makes me smile every time.
But let me also yap about Lucanis for a moment. (Of course you will let me. It's not like you can stop me. No one can stop me. Not even me.) I want to focus on how Lucanis interacts with Rook in this scene.
It's obvious he's let himself relax a little. He's a bit intoxicated. Clearly he's having fun. He smiles easily and flutters his eyelashes at Rook. When you choose the dialogue option that mentions ruining Solas' ritual, Lucanis insists that Rook tells the story. "[Neve and Harding] don't tell it the way you would," he says, encouraging Rook to talk about something, from what he says, he seems to have already heard, because he wants to hear them tell it.
Tumblr media
Then he decides he'll cook something while they chat, but he emphasizes that he will only do so "if Rook's staying," nudging them further. It couldn't be more clear that he wants them there and that he enjoys their company.
Tumblr media
I feel like I don't see enough people feral about it, because come on, he's so sweet in this scene. He obviously wants Rook around and their presence makes him happy.
And, yeah, I know this scene also happens with "just" friendly Rook. The thing is, I don't give a fuck. I don't think it diminishes the interaction in any way. The context matters. It's sweet with friendly Rook and even sweeter when they're more. Also, I played Lucanis' romance first, and I did not know that. What I saw in this scene during that first playthrough was the man absolutely delighted by Rook's company, repeatedly and enthusiastically asking them to stay and spend time with him, and it made my day. Still does.
When I keep babbling about how much I love Lucanis' romance, it's not just about all the hearts I get to click to see where they lead or the beautiful post-Tearstone love scene, it's also interactions like this where you see how much he wants Rook to be there, all the more or less subtle signs of affection (and yes, also friendship, because that goes hand in hand) that happen throughout the whole game.

Lucanis Dellamorte, the guy who avoids sleeping at all costs out of fear, tells Rook to talk to him as he falls asleep because their voice is a comfort and people say "his romance isn't good."
Lucanis, the guy who trapped his mind in a prison of his own making because he was afraid of the vulnerability of freedom, asks Rook to keep talking as he rests his head in their lap because when he's with Rook he knows he's safe in their arms and they're safe in his, and people say "he doesn't even seem to like Rook" BE SO FOR REAL WITH ME RIGHT NOW

In a way Veilguard allowed me to relive the response to Dark Souls 3 again: both are games that want desperately to move on, and that seeps into their themes. All the plot hooks, all the hints and questions, that have been left like breadcrumbs, from the Origin’s first mission to Inquisition, have all coalesced into a grander narrative. Thedas is old. The current Age is at an end. The uncertainty of the future scares those who thrived in the past. The antagonists seek to revive a corpse, to make yesterday into a thrall, to live eternally in death. And if Rook can defeat them, what are we as DA fans to do less? Yes, the games meant a lot to us, but what too awaits tomorrow to be loved and cherished? If the game inspired you, make something with it. Paint, dm a campaign, write poetry, stop going on #veilguard crit and ruining your gastrointestinal tract. I know people who make love songs based on Solavellan fics. Varric is dead, bitches! Let him rest in peace.

I’m a console player, so I can’t mod but hear me out:
The Crow casual wear in red silk/brown leather. Especially if the shirt is burgundy.
The thought inspired me enough to write a bit featuring my Rook (they’re mostly vague, though)
Rook/Lucanis
Except it’s just Lucanis starting to feel things lmao
Wine-Red Silk
Lucanis hates Teia.
Loathes is probably a better word.
And he has to direct it at Teia because he couldn’t be mad at Rook. Not when they’re practically beaming at the compliments of the group.
“Teia took my measurements a while ago. After the dragon attacks, she felt like she owed me something and asked if she could get me anything.” They shift some. “I asked for some clothes, ‘cus I lost most of what I had, and she practically gave me a wardrobe.”
And Teia - as a Crow and as an Antivan - would, of course, gift them with some sort of luxury. (Lucanis is pretty sure the woman doesn’t feel like it’s enough. However, as he’s come to know Rook, he knows they believe it to be too much.) Not only that, instead of the soft, cool violet or blue most Crows would wear, she’d given them red. The color of their home, and their people, the Shadows.
Typically, they wear the few sets of sleep clothes around the Lighthouse, switching between their gifted ones and the ones they’d kept.
Which brings him back to his current loathing.
Rook isn’t in their usual comfortable clothing. Instead, they’re in a wine-red silk button up with only half the buttons done and the sleeves rolled to their elbows. It’s perfectly fitted, defining the strength in their shoulders and hugging nearly point of them. The dark, gleaming silk also seems to brighten the color of their paint and tattoos, the rose-colored snake on their left forearm vibrant in comparison. The shirt is complimented with leather trousers only a shade darker than their own skin.
So Lucanis stands, with his mouth dry, his face warm, and his heart so loud in his ears that he can’t even hear what everyone else on the library is saying. Stands seething, because of course Teia’s expertise would make them look incredible in something so simple. ‘Maker, do they look good in red.’ And because part of him is envious he didn’t think to do that before they were prompted by her.
Rook’s close by, maybe two steps away, their attention focused more on the whole group than any one person. When their hand comes up to adjust their collar on the left side, he catches a glimpse of another tattoo in the same red as the other. The thought of pushing the soft silk aside to see what it is - to see if they have any others hiding under their-
He feels his face flush.
And he is now forced to confront the part he’s been attempting to avoid - that he likes them in such a way, something he hasn’t felt so strongly before.
There’s a tightness forming in his chest.
“Thanks.” To his surprise, there’s a flush of bashfulness to their cheeks. It’s hard to see under the joy their friends’ praise gives them. “Thought I’d switch it up a little, y’know?”
“Breathe, stupid!”
The sharp sound of Spite’s voice startles a gasp out of the assassin, and his vision swims a little as oxygen returns to his brain. And thank the Maker for his training, or that slip up might’ve been caught by everyone else in the room.
‘This is Teia’s fault.’

kudos to writers with dialogue-heavy works, I got mad respect for y'all. love using dialogue as a tool, but my default settings are non-verbal (dialogue) and non-stop yapping (description).

The thing with romancing Lucanis in the game is that I love all the versions and cannot decide.
I love the idea that 'an hour found' could be a kiss or more, or his silly little notes about exercises interpreted as intimacy. There is so mamy wonderful interpretations of how it could have gone down and my own imagination loves to fill the gaps and give Rook and him a sweet little moment here and there among the madness.
BUT I equally (or maybe even a little more) ADORE that they really just haven't. That it's a relationship that's l purely just the emotional intimacy at first, for a good while, and that Rook is the one who'd be happy to do everything but is willing to put their desires aside to give him the space he needs. That Rook is a safe space enough that he can just take his time to take apart whatever reasons he has to keep a distance - and he has many!
Having a bit too much on his plate aside, he's been tortured in all kinds of ways, I imagine even a gentle physical touch may be something he needs to ease into, that may just be the case even before the Ossuary to an extent since he probably didn't receive much affection.
His lack of experience - and I mean literally experiencing such feelings - may be something he needs to slowly unpack. Perhaps he only ever felt such way about Viago (I wouldn't say there was many if any other people) and even then those were not allowed to expand as much as with Rook. Maybe he questions if the feelings are truly his or a reflection if Spite's fascination.
And what I boil it down to at the end, as he slowly manages to make sense of it all and tackle and unwrap his issues within himself, he finally has this person he cares for, he wants, and it will never be his own. Nevermind the implication towards Rook? How does that work? How does one have that conversation with either of them?
Spite's part of him and whether they get along or not, whether you imagine Spite leaving them 'alone' or prticipating, it's an experience he had longed for deep down and he can't have that for himself. And I think it all really makes sense that he'd take it painfully slow, but I love for him to have the safe space to do that. That Rook's just there kinda, I'll be here when you're ready. I find that ultimately the realest, sweetest part of the romance.
And when he looses Rook he ultimately de ides that if he ever got them back, he'd not let that stop him, because he'd rather not have them for his own than not have them at all.
But I also really want them to smooch after the dessert. You see my struggle?

"Relax, cousin."
Lucanis didn't bother to acknowledge Illario's admonishment, and he didn't look away from the watch he was keeping on the street below while his cousin seemed more intent on balancing a dagger by the point on his finger.
"I've trailed him for a week," Illario continued. "He shows up at the same time every day. It's like clockwork."
When Lucanis still didn't respond, Illario flicked the dagger into the air, caught it, and shoved it back in its sheath.
"Have you ever met Viago's protégé?" he asked.
"No," Lucanis replied, and he glanced away from the street to shoot his cousin a suspicious look at the change of subject. "Why?"
"I see her at the Diamond sometimes. She's a pretty thing."
Lucanis snorted and turned his attention back to their target's supposed destination. "Viago will kill you."
"I've been with de Riva girls before."
"And were they personally trained by him? Do they live in his house?"
"You think he's fucking her? I thought he was fucking Teia Cantori."
Lucanis sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Believe it or not, I don't spend a great deal of my time considering who Viago de Riva is or is not fucking."
Not anymore, anyway.
"Might be worth it."
"I'll mention that in your eulogy." Lucanis smirked. "And your clockwork target is early."
"What?"
Illario jerked around to see over the edge of the short wall lining the rooftop.
"Asshole!" he spat. "Why can't anyone ever stick to the plan?"
As Lucanis started to rise, Illario grabbed his sleeve and tried to pull him back down. "Where the hell are you going?"
"He's alone in there. We can go now."
"We agreed to wait until the meeting was over. That was the plan."
"This is a better plan," Lucanis said. He shoved Illario's arm off and stood. "A plan that means I don't have to listen to you talk about girls for the next three hours."
"Lucanis—"
As Lucanis jumped off the roof, he heard Illario scramble to follow him.
"Asshole," his cousin muttered.
Lucanis just laughed.

5/20/25: Still 0/59, no donations in DAYS
Imagine, just for a moment, that this is your life. Your reality. You = me. Imagine being completely stripped of all and any control you have ever known by a cruel, demented woman who hates you, imagine having no choice but to be homeless or forced to live in her soul sucking, deeply religious house where all but misery is forbidden. the catch? She gets almost every last cent of your SSI as soon as you get it. Imagine being in a situation so utterly hopeless and this being your only chance to escape a worse fate?
Please, without my meds or food and the uncertainty and misery of it all makes our existence here more unbearable here. Imagine if this was your life.
