one headcanon i don't often discuss is that if wei wuxian's original body had been left behind, i think lan wangji absolutely would have taken it.

not the same way luo binghe does, keeping the corpse by his side passing spiritual energy to it for years in desperate hope. lan wangji knows wei wuxian is dead. he knows there is no revival. he also knows that jiang cheng especially insists on destroying every last trace of wei wuxian he can get his hands on.

thus, lan wangji's goal in absconding with wei wuxian's body would have been simply to properly bury wei wuxian in a place where he wouldn't be discovered nor disturbed.

he'd probably visit the grave on important dates and offer a jar of emperor's smile. he'd play music not out of fear for wei wuxian's soul, but simply to honor wei wuxian's memory with song.

lan wangji grows older and wiser while his first and only love never will. his self assurance and maturity asserts itself as he acts in accordance with his principles, mirroring wei wuxian's own code in life. yet lan wangji always has a faint air of muted bitterness about him, like a man whose wife died young.

even wei wuxian's headstone weathers with time, while lan wangji's cultivation keeps his appearance pristine and untouched. grief is like phases of the moon; it may change form, but it never leaves you.

and then one night thirteen years after wei wuxian's death, when rescuing juniors on mount dafan, lan wangji hears a familiar song played on a dizi. he can't rush off to check the burial site he has taken care of all these years, but he doesn't need to.

Yes, I agree that Jiang Cheng is a sympathetic character. Ofcourse he is. Every villain of MDZS is sympathetic. But that doesn't stop them from being the villain.

MDZS at its core is a story concerning the morals of a society. And all the villains (JC, Xue Yang, JGY) prioritise themselves when faced with an ethical dilema. JC refuses to save the Wen Remnants, Xue Yang repeatedly traumatises Xiao XingChen, JGY kills multiple people including his wife and son in order to maintain his political position.

Yes they have people in their lives they care about and yes they have been dealt an unfair hand. But that doesn't excuse their lack of a moral compass. And thats why they are the antagonists.
