STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl Review in Progress
So far, severe bugs have been adding the wrong kind of friction to this refreshingly brutal single-player FPS.

A certain kind of friction can go a long way in creating a challenging and punishing game that’s also gripping. When developers leave you to figure things out for yourself amid dangerous enemies that can kill you on a moment’s notice, rarely giving you an easy way out of a mess, it becomes clear that the survival instincts embedded in the STALKER series are very much alive in the long-awaited STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl. Then there’s the type of friction that prevents you from engaging with it in earnest, like poor technical performance, bugs that are sometimes hilarious but at others game-breaking, or nonsensical enemy behavior. STALKER 2 has both kinds of friction in equal measure. It just can’t stop getting in its own way, but for all that’s working against it, there’s an underlying greatness that surfaces every now and then.
STALKER 2 is a massive game; as of this writing, I’m about 20 hours into my playthrough and still have so much left to do in The Zone in both the main story questline and in side missions that I’m having to squint to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Due to the review copy coming in just a week before launch and a progress-halting bug in the main mission (which cost me a day of playtime and required me to reload a previous save that made me lose about four hours of progress in order to avoid it), I haven’t been able to finish it in time to give you a final verdict at launch. And for a series like STALKER, where the resolutions to the story’s mysteries are inherent to how it’s earned its cult following, seeing it to the end is of utmost importance, regardless of the roadblocks I have to truck through to get there.

Whispers in the Walls
Before Rina’s mother-in-law passed away, she said, “After I’m gone, don’t change anything in the household. Keep everything exactly as I am leaving it.” A week after her mother-in-law's passing, Rina changed everything, redecorating the house to her own taste. Her father-in-law supported her, but her husband, Rasheed, did not. Rasheed outright told her, “I will never forgive you for undoing the arrangement my mother made.” Rina ignored him; this was her home now, and she wanted it her way.
Rina had never intended for things to go this way. When her marriage proposal first came, she was thrilled at the thought of finally having a mother figure, someone who would care for her. She had lost her mother at birth, and her father, who raised her alone, could never quite replace that motherly love. She had always longed for a mother’s affection, especially when she saw her friends being doted on by their mothers.
When she married Rasheed, she told herself that her mother-in-law would be like her mother. However, her first morning after marriage, she was woken up by her mother-in-law banging loudly on her door. Rina opened the door to see her mother-in-law glaring, “Are you a queen’s daughter, keeping me waiting at the door? Didn’t your father teach you any manners?” Shocked, Rina listened as her mother-in-law demanded she go bathe and report to the kitchen. Rina’s request for warm water was met with disdain. Her mother-in-law, Kamrun Nahar, managed the household with such discipline that even a famous leader like Hitler would have blushed.
Her mother-in-law controlled every aspect of the house with an iron fist, so much so that even her own husband feared her. Rina later learned that her father-in-law’s own mother had asked him for forgiveness on her deathbed, for leaving him under Kamrun Nahar’s rule.
During the pandemic, Kamrun Nahar succumbed to COVID-19. Even as she neared death, she commanded Rina to keep everything exactly as she had left it. Rina, however, couldn’t resist the freedom she felt after her mother-in-law’s passing. She changed everything, much to Rasheed’s anger.
One night, as Rasheed lay next to her, telling her a funny story, Rina heard a noise—a cough. Her mother-in-law had coughed just like that during her illness. When Rina asked Rasheed if he heard it, he dismissed it as an outside sound. But Rina couldn’t shake the feeling. She stayed awake all night, straining to hear any other noise.
The next day, the housemaid's mother, Surma’s mom, came to clean. Rina, who usually helped her, was visibly afraid to enter the room where her mother-in-law had passed. Later that night, as Rasheed held her, Rina admitted to hearing footsteps in the adjacent room. Rasheed, initially brushing it off, eventually agreed to stay up with her to see if he heard anything.
That night, Rina was once again disturbed by strange noises. When she woke Rasheed, he became frustrated, feeling she was imagining things. But the sense of someone’s presence lingered for Rina, a feeling that seemed to haunt the house long after her mother-in-law’s passing. seemore

How to Steam Pumpkin to Make It Tender, Chewy, and Delicious Like Street Vendors
Steamed pumpkin is likely a favorite dish for many, especially for those who are health-conscious and looking to lose weight. Many people choose steamed pumpkin as a healthy option. If you want to steam pumpkin at home and make it taste as delicious as what you’d buy from street vendors, here are some tips to achieve that:
Choose the Right Pumpkin: Opt for fresh, firm pumpkins with vibrant colors. Varieties like kabocha or butternut squash work well for steaming.
Cut Evenly: Slice the pumpkin into uniform pieces to ensure even cooking. Aim for about 2-3 centimeters thick.
Pre-soak: For added flavor, soak the pumpkin pieces in a mixture of water and a pinch of salt for about 30 minutes before steaming. This helps enhance the taste.
Use a Proper Steamer: Make sure to use a steamer basket that allows steam to circulate well around the pumpkin. You can also line the basket with banana leaves for added aroma.
Timing is Key: Steam the pumpkin for about 15-20 minutes, but check for doneness periodically. It should be tender but not mushy.
Add Flavor: Once steamed, you can sprinkle it with a little sugar, coconut flakes, or serve it with a drizzle of honey or syrup for a delightful taste.

Beirut strikes target potential new Hezbollah chief, Israeli official says
What we're covering
Israel’s aerial campaign in Lebanon is being conducted at an intensity comparable only to the first weeks of its bombardment in Gaza last year, an air warfare expert told CNN. An Israeli airstrike halted traffic near the main Lebanon-Syria border crossing, a Lebanese official said. Tens of thousands have fled via the checkpoint as 1 million displaced people seek safety from bombardment.
The US does not believe Israel has decided how it will respond to this week’s missile attack from Iran, an official said. Iran’s attack destroyed at least three buildings at the Netavim Air Base in southern Israel and left at least a dozen craters, a CNN analysis shows.seemore

Soccer-Ancelotti makes no excuses after Real's shock defeat at Lille
(Reuters) - Defending champions Real Madrid struggled to deliver their best performance in a surprising 1-0 Champions League loss to Lille on Wednesday, and manager Carlo Ancelotti acknowledged that they must accept the criticism that follows.
Lille's relentless pressing paid off with a penalty from Jonathan David in first-half stoppage time, marking Ancelotti's side's first defeat in all competitions since January.
As the record 15-time Champions League winners, Real Madrid now sits on three points after two matches, following their opening victory against VfB Stuttgart.seemore
