thinkin about how, if you take the reading of hamlet where hamlet has no or limited free will or ability to make decisions, “since my dear soul was mistress of her choice / and could of men distinguish, her election / hath sealed thee for herself” gains a whole new level of significance. when he has such limited (or perceived limited) choices available, horatio is something hamlet HAS chosen.

even if we’re just looking at people: rosencrantz and guildenstern are recruited by hamlet’s uncle and force themselves into hamlet’s space; ophelia is alternatively sent towards and pulled away from him, no matter if hamlet wants her there or not; claudius took hamlet’s father away from him; and gertrude is the reason claudius is now a closer relative to hamlet. hamlet didn’t choose any of these people’s proximity to him, at least during the time of the play.

but horatio? horatio has no reason to be here but hamlet himself. horatio is a lifeline for hamlet in a lot of ways, but in this reading, one of those ways is that he is a piece of autonomy for hamlet in a world with increasingly narrow opportunities to exercise it. horatio is the friend hamlet has chosen, and the outcome of his choice - horatio’s presence - is something he actually wants, rather than the least bad of increasingly bad options.
