#the terror#obligatory reblog#i will never ever get over this scene#just... the expressions alone have me clawing up the walls with how laden they are#the way francis looks at james when he says; “someone has earned our trust; respect; and confidence”#and the way that james smiles back because he knows that francis is ostensibly referring to jopson; as they doubtlessly discussed#but he also knows that francis is speaking more directly to him; a subtle showing of confidence; a quiet reassurance.#meanwhile edward is taking in francis' words with a look of bemused concern before shrugging in acceptance;#because he knows they're short of men and need a capable set of hands; but he can't think of where they'll find them#with john looking to him for reassurance: “i know it's necessary; but do you think it wise?"#but then comes the reveal; the welcome sleight of hand as james stops in front of thomas#and francis doesn't look to see how thomas responds; not at first -#no; instead he's gauging john and edward's reactions;#the shadow of a smile in place because he can already guess just how they'll take the news:#there's john who looks nearly as stunned as thomas at first; but then starts grinning like he's seen a minor miracle#and then there's edward;#whose face unfurls from absolute surprise to utter delight when james hands thomas his promotion papers;#edward who keeps looking from thomas to francis in happy disbelief; as if asking whether this is really happening; whether francis means it#francis responding with a smile that speaks almost of parental indulgence: “i'm happy you liked the surprise; i was hoping you would”#the admiration and fondness in james' face when he looks at thomas; and thomas' own look of confusion#because this is something unprecedented; unheard of; and yet it's happening to him; of all people#(not realizing how true francis' words are; how vital he has been and still is to their continued survival and success)#francis for once taking a lighthearted jibe at thomas; that old familiarity between them still there; but now elevated to new meaning#and edward; always edward - laughing; the happiest we've seen him in the entire show; and all because thomas made lieutenant#god; the amount of character-building that takes place here; the amount of inferred familiarity and friendship; love and respect#that we never see take place but which so clearly shines through in every interaction in this scene#this will always be one of my absolute favourite moments of genuine emotional connection#in a show already filled to the brim with the enduring complexities of human love and compassion
