I've been thinking about how you can absolutely read the premise of Murderbot as "Congrats, you escaped the Matrix! You broke free of your programming, realized the shadows on the cave wall were just that, shadows. You still have to go to work though. What, did you think you could escape? The chains are still on, sucker, keep looking at that cave wall."

Sure, MB has realized it has free will. But the material conditions of its life prohibit it from doing anything with it. What good is a hacked governor module in a society that still views it as an object meant for use and discard? What good is your own autonomy in a world where you're constantly observed for any deviation from the norm?

How are we different from MB in this exactly?

Do you want to read a queernormative book about a man's war against his own mind, set to the backdrop of the most expansive world-building you've ever seen? With lyrical prose that could only be the result of a literal poet writing the work??

MAY I SUGGEST

This is a book that I will forever scream from the rooftops about. You want an adventure brimming with immersive world-building? You want the most beautifully written work you've ever read? You want to witness the internal struggle of mental illness told with such accuracy that you'd like to mail the author a copy of the DSM-5? You want, very specifically, a gradual QPR between a man who is his own worst enemy and a shape-shifting godlike being???

This book is, by the author's own words, "not for everybody". I'd assume this is because the pacing is slow, and when I say that the MC is his own worst enemy, I MEAN IT. And yet you root for him the entire time, and the book's slow pacing gives you time to just sit and FEEL IT.

Please, I beg of you PLEASE go visit the world of Shale. Truly a phenomenal piece of work and it shocks me to my core that no one on this app is talking about it.
