"School districts currently work with processing companies to offer cashless payment systems for families. But the companies can charge “processing fees” for each transaction. By law, students who are eligible for reduced price meals cannot be charged more than 30 cents for breakfast and 40 cents for lunch. With processing fees, however, families can end up paying 10 times that amount. Processing companies charge as much as $3.25 or 4% to 5% per transaction, according to a recent report from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau."

I know these are hugely popular and not a surprise to most of you, but I'd also like to recommend:
The Philip Defranco Show, which covers all the biggest daily news items in 20 minutes in a friendly, relatable way, and often includes links/calls to action on important items
The Daily Show, which covers political news in a comedy package so it's easier to swallow without sucking your soul

Finding a balance between staying informed and totally sacrificing your mental health is important. We can't stick our heads in the sand and pretend things aren't happening, but we also can't expose ourself to atrocity 24/7 and still have the mental energy to keep fighting. Find your balance, rest and recharge, and you'll be a stronger, better advocate. Stay safe, everyone <3
Hi. Things are bleak, I know that. I know that we paid for Trump's last term with blood and it is likely the price will be blood again.
But listen to me. LISTEN.
You do not have to force yourself to witness horrors as an act of activism. It is not a form of activism. You can put your phone down, you can block that horrific video. We cannot win if you cannot fight and you will not be able to fight if you are hopeless.
Do not let them guilt you into this. People who are exhausted are easier to walk over. Take care of yourself, find community where you find joy.

A message to the Dropout community --
First off, we want to tell you how much we appreciate everyone who reached out expressing discomfort about the use of an outdated and offensive term in not one, but two pieces of content within the past few weeks - our Dropout Presents special Chris Grace: As Scarlett Johansson and the most recent episode of Breaking News. These should have been caught and removed at an earlier stage, and we want to apologize for letting this happen, especially to all indigenous Inuit, Yupik, and Aleut fans. Chris brought the issue to our attention as well, and we've been working with him to ensure everything was properly addressed.
But what are we doing about it? For one, removing the offensive slurs from those respective episodes. And second, we're donating $5,000 to Arctic Rose, a non-profit organization that helps Northern Inuit & Indigenous youth by providing safe spaces to participate and grow through Indigenous-led, arts-based, and culturally grounded programs.
We appreciate everyone who brought this issue to our attention, and will be mindful about it going forward!
Dropout
Additionally, Chris wanted to put together a statement of his own, which you can read here!
#oh damn. i knew the term was inaccurate but i didn't know it was a slur#thank you dropout for posting this so the rest of us can be more informed and avoid accidentally hurting people

Donating blood is really easy! They also give you snacks and most places also have prizes/rewards like movie tickets, shirts, raffle entries, etc. If you go specifically to a blood donation center they also do this all day every day so the nurses there are REALLY good at it. I get antsy around needles and sometimes I barely feel it, it's kind of amazing haha. They're also very used to people who are nervous so they've always been kind if I or a friend want to not see the needle, need to hold a hand, need a blanket, etc. They're very gentle and caring and kind.
They recommend making an appointment but lots of places have space for walk-ins too (they just don't advertise it).
Blood donations literally save lives! Please consider donating!

i think part of the reason the response was so overwhelming is people are just Not Doing Well In General, but i think there's also a sense of: elmo was in your home when you were a small child, telling you that you did a good job, explaining that it's ok to cry, teaching you about something that might be your favorite now. elmo held a very parental-adjacent/older brother/loving mentor position for a lot of people as kids. when that type of person (or puppet) asks you how it's going, i think a lot of people felt more compelled to be honest, even if only half jokingly.
the fact that they chose to have him and the rest of the characters respond in the same supportive way they would to kids having a bad day is really beautiful, and i think captures the magic of sesame street. like the song says: sweepin' the clouds away, everything's a-ok, friendly neighbors there.
