Natural Resource Management is an extremely diverse field that includes all careers that focus on the conservation of the Earth’s renewable resources. The goal of all natural resource managers is to conserve the global and local environment in perpetuity. Only through sound scientific research will this be possible. Environmental careers are among those projected to experience considerable growth in the coming decades. The Bristol County Agricultural High School Natural Resource Management program provides a broad introduction to various environmental fields and is delivered by instructors with professional experience in wildlife biology and outdoor recreation.

Environmental Conservation Department (ECD) students maintain the exhibits in the Bristol County Museum of Natural History.  Of course, the live exhibits require the most attention.  The museum includes more than 4,000 gallons of aquaria, including this 700-gallon aquarium being serviced by the Environmental Engineering seniors.  Bristol Aggie is a public, vocational high school that offers unique and rigorous programs.  Interested students should visit www.bristolaggie.com to learn more and schedule a campus tour.

The second annual ECD Holiday Alumni Reception was held today. The students were prepared with a discussion about networking at conferences and professional meetings. Topics included proper dress, introducing one's self, and initiating professional conversations.
Ten alumni were kind enough to spend this morning with us. They represented various environmental professionals and graduate and undergraduate programs. (See tags on photos. )
The alumni spent two hours mingling with our students discussing the demands and expectations of environmental professionals and college students.

With SD cards and rechargeable batteries purchased through Donors Choose campaigns, some of our NRM students learned to and practiced setting up camera traps.  These infrared-triggered cameras are often used by wildlife biologists to collect data about wildlife populations.  There are a few important points to properly setting a camera trap.  The photographs captured suggest that they got it right.
Unlike biologists, camera traps can work continuously in remote areas for weeks on end.  These cameras were set at the Smith Farm property with our friends at Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust.

Every spring @mass.wildlife visits our campus to check and band the eaglets in the nest located on our campus.  This year the two large and healthy eaglets we found in the nest.  These are the fourth and fifth known young eagles produced in this rather young nest.  (One year of banding did not occur due to COVID.)
As usual, the Mass Wildlife personnel put on an outstanding educational display for the NRM juniors and seniors.  The history of bald eagle conservation in Massachusetts, the eagle banding system, and the importance of morphometric data collected were explained as the crew set to work.
.
We are very thankful to the staff of the Mass Wildlife Southeastern Region.  They go above and beyond.

The local company of the @massdcr Wildlands Firefighters visited with the NRM juniors.  They discussed their agency and their work.  After a little training and a briefing about their task, everyone headed outside for some first-hand experience with the unique equipment used by Southeastern Massachusetts wildlands firefighters and a competitive hose relay.
.
This was a great day and we are very grateful for the outstanding lessons delivered by these conservation professionals.
.
Great photographs by Ms. Bouley.

This is our adult, me Plymouth Redbelly Cooter enjoying some parsley. This turtle came to us from the Buttonwood Park Zoo. Our second-largest, native, freshwater turtle (second to the Snapping Turtle) is also the only herbivorous, freshwater turtle in New England.
This and other native animals live in the Bristol County Natural History Museum located on our campus. Our classrooms and labs are also located in the museum.

We were very happy and lucky to have Stephanie Vail-Muse, of the @usfws North Attleborough Fish Hatchery, participate in our Conservation Professional Speaker Series.  Stephanie is one of the hatchery fish biologists.
.
Speakers are asked to describe their jobs and discuss their favorite parts of their jobs.  We also request that they discuss their least favorite and most challenging parts of their work and describe the professional paths - as wandering as some may be.
.
Stephanie Vail-Muse described the challenges of working with difficult situations and highlighted some of her more interesting projects. She explained the professional necessity of interpersonal and writing skills and described her career path to her current position and offered some suggestions on seeking a career with the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

Meetings can be monotonous and disheartening.  However, we were excited, humbled, and thankful for the meeting that we had this morning.  Nearly a dozen conservation professionals from @massenvironmentalpolice
@mass.wildlife @usfws @rwpzoo @newenglandaquarium
toured our facilities in the @bristolaggie Center for Science and the Environment (CSE) to brainstorm and help develop best practices for our participation in the joint  @zoos_aquariums - US Fish & Wildlife Service - @turtlesurvival  program to help protect our native turtles from poachers.  The expertise in the room was staggering and tremendously helpful.  We came up with many useful answers and many more important questions.  I am sure that we will have some more great conversations.
.
Thank you all for your help.  It is very encouraging to know that we are all in this together.
