You know how in the first demo of Slay the Princess, Skeptic was originally known as "Voice of the Doubting" and he was paired with the Damsel? That gave me the impression that Skeptic knew her a long time ago and was determined to not only get her out of her prison but also figure out the truth of the construct. Unfortunately, that reality was never brought to fruition and he was instead paired with Prisoner. The original Damsel became a distant memory to him. He barely got to know who she was. In fact, he wasn't even sure if she was real to begin with.

Fast forward to Happily Ever After. Skeptic sees this soft and delicate princess and can't help but feel like he's met her before. Only now, she's a lot more tired and nervous. But he still isn't quite sure about who she really is and what's going on with her. After all the flames go out and HEA and LQ are ready to leave the cabin, suddenly everything clicks for Skeptic. It really is the Damsel he knew so long ago. He isn't sure how he feels about seeing her again...but it pains him to see how miserable she's become. He may not be in love with her like Smitten was, but at the very least, he wants to build a genuine connection with her this time. He learns to be patient and gentle with her, but tries not to force her to do anything she doesn't want. He just wants something real with her, and much to his relief, so does she.

For HEA, I think she would vaguely remember Skeptic back when he was known as "The Doubting" and she was "The Damsel". He became a distant memory for her too, but she never stopped believing that he was real and kept hoping she would see him again. It takes a little longer for her to recognize him, perhaps until Post-Construct, and once she does she's very touched that he never forgot about her or stopped caring for her. After being smothered with sweet nothings from Smitten, it feels nice to be with someone so grounded and honest, albeit a little tense and cautious. Her need to please him still persists, but it does help him relax and accept things as they are rather than constantly questioning them. HEA is also very relieved that Skeptic isn't looking for a romantic relationship either. Starting fresh and being friends with him is more than enough for her.
