Her poem #IAmABlackWoman speaks to the power and strength of the black woman. —————- Born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, Black Arts poet, playwright, and children’s writer Mari Evans was educated at the University of Toledo, where she studied fashion design. She was influenced by Langston Hughes, who was an early supporter of her writing. In her short-lined poems, grounded in personal narratives, Evans explored the nature of community and the power of language to name and reframe. She worked at a fast-food restaurant in the small town, located 145 miles south of St. Louis, and was well known in the area, local television station KFVS reports (note: the Sikeston Department of Public Safety misgendered Pop in their initial report). Authorities say Pop died from her injuries. Pop’s killing is believed to be the 10th violent death of a transgender or gender-nonconforming person so far this year, says Human Rights Campaign, which advocates for LGTBQ civil rights. In the same way you dont try to love your home, you mostly try to maintain it and live in it. You dont need to always keep a good mood at home. No need to keep up pretenses b/c this is your house. The home is the place where he can be verified, vulnerable and replenished. Unfortunately it also we can become his safe place to lash out, the area to release all the hate the outside world has gave him, the place to act out his fears and the appropriate corner to work off his anguish. He is able to unload all of this on us because we love him unconditionally regardless of how bad those conditions get. We consider him the object of our affection and the center of ourselves. We want to fix what is broken in him because we love him regardless of his current situation & with little judgment with what he has done. At almost the exact same age and in the same two week span, both #AhmaudArbery and Breonna were killed by senseless anti-black violence. In the middle of the night on March 13 in Louisville, KY, two police officers and one sergeant entered the wrong home without knocking or announcing themselves. They claim they were executing a search warrant for a suspected drug dealer, but this person did not live at Breonna’s address and had actually already been arrested. Breonna’s boyfriend fired a shot when he thought people were trying to break in. The police then fired 20 shots, 8 of which hit and killed Breonna. This is angering and heartbreaking. Breonna selflessly saved many lives as an EMT, only to have hers taken away so senselessly by police violence. May she get justice somehow. Tiffany was a mother of three & grandmother of four whose children describe her as “big on family”. Nearing the end of her sentence, she was “a strong and healthy woman” whose symptoms were ignored. She had passed out in the same shower just days before. . Tiffany’s life mattered. We must act to release women like Tiffany back to their families—people who don’t have the money to pay lawyers to prove their vulnerability like Michael Cohen or 6ix9ine.
