something about vi never wanting anyone in her life to change. something about jayce not caring at all how much viktor has changed so long as he's alive. something about the way vi associates radical change with death, perceiving jinx's continued existence as a kind of necromantic horror—the way jayce would shatter fundamental laws of nature without a second thought in order to give viktor the best chance at survival, in whatever form that may take. transformation as rebirth vs murder, hextech vs shimmer. nature has made us intolerant to change, but fortunately, we have the capacity to change our nature. and then jayce, realizing that he hasn't changed at all, not really—that he is a scientist at heart, and he shouldn't have tried to be anything else. and then vi, realizing she has become someone unrecognizable—never thought my sister would turn bluebelly. and for both of them, it's too little, too late.

HELLOOO SORRY THIS IS LATe i swear everything in my inbox is rotting from neglect. BUT I'M GONNA ANSWER ITALL

hopefully i answer this right but.... i really like all the machine lore in my wip ! the whole "time is currency" thing that i mentioned obviously takes the spotlight in terms of my world's defining features, but machines and the energy that powers them also plays a pretty big role! the gist of it is basically, CLOCKED OUT's city of klairva is mainly fueled by electricity, which is generated in power plants and produced by huge watches wound up by the Clockmaker when he was alive. it's one of the reasons why the city is able to survive with so little land area and such a dense population; essentially, there's an infinite source of energy. however, since the energy source is tied to magic (like a lot of things in my world lmao), it will undoubtedly collapse if the magic ends up dying. or if, you know, the creator of that magic has been considered dead for half a century...

exempt from all this, though, are automatons - half-sentient machines who can take orders but not think for themselves. this is where lola comes in with her mechanic expertise: she makes and fixes automatons! automatons aren't powered by electric batteries, but rather by "keys" - which must be blessed by a Cardinal. the only magical aspect of these keys are the ability to bestow the machine with a half-consciousness (think modern day AI/robots, who can respond to stimuli but don't think or themselves), and keep the machine running without constantly having to be winded (an automatic key instead of a manual one!)

lola, however, has nothing to do with the magic of it all. she deals with the grit, the gears and the grease and the details and dimensions. the design. and i want to capitalize on this human/machine, creator/creation dynamic throughout the whole story - what defines humanity? if your body is ruined into metal, if someone tells you what to do and you obey, does that mean you are more of a machine? if someone else controls how long you live for, are you no different than a generator? the human as a machine and the god as its creator....hm.....

but anyway! i hope this relationship becomes clearer as i write it bc.... all i have rn are vibes LMAOOOO and i don't fully know how i'm gonna represent this or if i have too many elements interacting with each other etc etc TT i might end up toning this down so that my world isn't so magic-reliant (maybe have them use fossil fuels or something idk lmaooo) - but yeah, i like how the whole "time is currency" interacts w the city's machinery as a parallel representing humans as the machines and the cardinals/the Clockmaker as their creator. (i just realized i could've just said that last sentence instead of that massive info dump but.... oh well KLDJALKDJKD)

CLOCKED OUT - Character Intros

there's been a bit of radio silence on clocked out recently, so i thought it'd be cool to do an actual intro of the project's major characters :D ! without further ado, with drawings illustrated by yours truly... (+ picrews lmao)

lola ríos velásquez: the mechanic's assistant living in klairva's southern district of snakesborough, and the story's main protagonist. lola is a fierce, determined person who will do anything to protect her family. unfortunately, bad luck seems to follow her wherever she goes - and an unlucky encounter with a Cardinal, one of the city's time magicians, leaves her cursed to run out of time in weeks. desperation to reverse the curse leads her on a frantic quest with some of klairva's most eccentric outcasts...

cuckoo: resident mad scientist of the crow's nest - southern klairva's infamous crime underbelly. she's ambitious, kind of unhinged, and determined to overthrow the cardinals' rule of tyranny using her innovation. when lola shows up at her doorstep, desperate to be saved, cuckoo sees her as an excellent opportunity... for an experiment.

belle macy: a jazz singer in the vibrant clubs of sunswick, the wealthy northern district of klairva. shadowed by a dark past in the effervescence drug trade, belle wants to rise to riches and fame - no matter who or what gets in her way. when she finds out the true identity of her close friend, alaric latcha, she decides to use him as leverage...

alaric latcha: the Cardinal himself! well... Cardinal-in-training. alaric leads a reserved life in the shadow of his father's disapproval - despite being born with time magic in his veins, he's afraid of his own power. with one final chance at redemption, alaric is determined to cast his doubts aside and make his father proud. the shame of it otherwise would be unbearable. besides, his best friend belle is helping him out, so there's no way things can go wrong. right?

rowan wu: the somewhat clueless, charismatic "sidekick" of cuckoo, who claims to owe her a favor. behind his easy smiles, however, lies a complicated past that he's trying to escape from... a past he dulls by doing cuckoo's dirty work. but his involvement in lola and cuckoo's experiment ends up bringing him right back to the past that he so desperately tried to hide.

Sepulcrave: Narrator of Legend of the Rat Bastards, wet rat necromancer man who never bathes, I hate him, I love him, I want to put him in a jar and shake him, hated his BFF for ten years then forgave him on sight the second they refound each other, has pickled a corpse in a barrel of spirits and didn't tell his husband for five years.

Max Duarte: DnD character, bratty nonbinary tiefling warlock, wants to not care but cares so much, riddled with self-hatred but also has a god complex, monsterfucker, found out they had a baby brother and immediately kidnapped him for twelve hours.

Eliza Farthing: Genderfluid Victorian actor who thought she was a literal fairy for almost 30 years, will tempt fate and the police, hates her brother but will go to court for him, will fight anyone, would rather die than be normal.

Alexander Farthing: Most normal man in the world, took the homophobe-to-gay-man pipeline, found out he was a fairy and hasn't recovered since, has punched a policeman and would do it again.

Arthur Watt: 35 going on 76, most normal fairy you have ever met (including Alexander), has a lapdog called Lancelot, spent years creating a normal life only to throw it away the second he saw a pretty man in need, world record for most anxiety.

Lord Kemilius: Literal Satyr, runs a circus, assigned dad but not good at it, done with everyone's shit, 80% top hat and mutton-chops, would like to be personally responsible for the death of P. T. Barnum.

Turik: Small trans royalist, can turn into a kestrel, has two people he actually wants to talk to, please tell him what to do, friendly to literally everyone, somehow The king thought getting him to assassinate someone was a good idea, secretly a very good liar.

Adramal: Used to turn into a magpie before the horrors, missing a leg due to the horrors, extremely gay, wants to overthrow the monarchy, accidentally got unofficially adopted by a woman he can't stand, got bored, overthought and tried to start a coup.

Lady Constancia: She's serving evil stepmother, deserves a gun but gets a crossbow, all she wanted to do was shoot birds now she's trying to overthrow the government, her adopted son has a royalist boyfriend and she hates it, gaslight gatekeep girlboss.
