Martha and Luis have been researching at Sutro Library for months, and we're so glad to have been able to work with them! Their work involves some of the oldest books printed in the Americas, many of which had firebrands on their pages to identify them.

Join CalMatters.org in an online conversation about California’s long struggle to help people with serious mental illness on April 25, 1-1:30pm
The COVID-19 pandemic, people with mental illness living on the streets, the fentanyl epidemic, and a growing mental health crisis among children and teenagers, has made mental health a top concern for Californians. Go Green on #EarthDay 🌱☘️
We celebrated #EarthDay by attending @saclib Galt-Marian O. Lawrence Library's awesome Native Plant Nursery presentation! We learned all about landscaping with beautiful California native plants.
Did you know using native plants can save water AND create cozy homes for butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees? Talk about a win-win for Mother Nature! 🦋🐝

Flowing with @nasa's #EarthDay2024 theme of "Water Touches Everything," we pulled some breathtaking water-inspired photos from our collection:
A sunset over the Pacific at Point Loma
The cascading upper Yosemite Falls
The shores of Laguna Beach
The winding Feather River
Let's celebrate and protect the vital role of water in sustaining our world

Humane Society horses, 1907: “On account of the immense demand for heavy teaming, the officers of the Humane Societies are kept busy arresting inhumane drivers and giving relief to horses whose collars have chafed through the skin, and those improperly fed. The colt on the left can hardly stand, but was staggering under a big load. The skin is also worn off its neck by the collar." @humanesociety
