sycamore tree snippet #24
from chapter 25: "Boxelder"
“So how is it even possible for the entire city to have a power outage just… completely out of nowhere?” Aaron asked. Tim shrugged. “I don’t know. Clearly it can happen.” “Thanks, Sarge. I got that much.” “I don’t work at a power plant, Thorsen. I don’t know.” “Fine,” Aaron conceded. He faced himself straight ahead, already unbuckling his seatbelt when he noticed they were in the parking lot for their destination. Control had dispatched them over to a strip mall. Apparently the storeowners were dealing with an uptick in shoplifting since the lights went down. Both Tim and Aaron felt like there was probably a better use of their time than collaring some teenagers swiping tchotchkes from department stores, but… apparently there wasn’t. “The hell do you steal from a strip mall anyway?” Aaron wondered aloud as they got out of the shop and made their way inside. “Thorsen, are you ever going to find a question I can actually answer? Or are you doing this intentionally?” “Christ,” Aaron remarked, looking Tim over as if assessing whether he was actually Tim. “Someone’s cranky today.” “I’m not—” Tim cut himself off with a sigh, shaking his head and taking stock of the stores nearby in case there was something going on in any of them. So far, none of the ones they’d checked out seemed to have any customers inside at all, let alone shoplifters. “You’re definitely cranky,” Aaron maintained. “That’s, like, your resting state. I’d actually be more concerned if you weren’t.” “Shut up, Thorsen.” “See? That’s what I’m talking about.”

hey hey. i’ve actually made crazy progress (for me, that is) on Sycamore Tree chapter 25. no promises but i’m very optimistic about it being finished well ahead of my “typical” 2mo schedule. but in the meantime, i had the itch to write pure unfiltered angst, so i really quickly threw out an mcd based on episode 7.08. if you like my content (and somehow enjoy unhappy endings as much as i do), i’d so appreciate it if you gave it a read.
as per usual, thank you all so so dearly. i’ve gotten nothing but love from this fandom. could not be more grateful. <3

sycamore tree snippet #23
from chapter 25: "Boxelder"
Grey arched a brow, looking back and forth between them with one eyebrow raised. “Bradford. Chen.” “Sarge,” they said in unison. “… Did you two need something, or…?” “Yeah,” Lucy replied. “Well—I did. Just me. It’s—I figured I’d tell both of you.” Grey still had a skeptical expression, eyeing Tim for a few seconds as if expecting an interjection of some kind before eventually accepting the situation as it was. “Alright,” he obliged, gesturing towards chairs in front of his desk, which Lucy and Tim promptly took.

from chapter 24: "Brushholly"
“You’re not funny[," Lucy said.] Tim shrugged. “Agree to disagree on that one,” he teased. Lucy, without much thought, finally got her hands on him in order to playfully shove at his shoulder. “Ow. Jesus, Lucy,” he hissed, arm wrapping instinctually around his midriff, where the bulk of the injury was. “I thought it was just a bruise.” “It is just a bruise,” he maintained. “Bruises still hurt, you know.” Lucy raised her chin, a new expression coming over her face now that Tim couldn’t quite parse until the sultry tone in her voice gave it away. “I still want to see,” she told him. “Are you serious?” he huffed, slouching down a little as if he were physically deflating. “What is so—” She put a finger against his lips to silence him, which he promptly pushed away. Lucy bit at her bottom lip. “It’s on your chest,” she reminded. “Yes, I want to see.” He shook his head, though, at last, he obliged her request and started slipping the hospital gown off of his shoulders. “Really? Here? The least sensual place ever?” “I’m not picky,” Lucy quipped, watching intently.

sycamore tree snippet #21
from chapter 24: "Brushholly"
“I… can’t work this today. Can I? I don’t have a training officer,” Celina interjected, looking around the group with wide eyes that eventually landed on Grey when he started speaking. “Sure you do,” he replied. “Ride with Chen.” “But she’s not—” At the same time, Lucy had started with, “But I’m not—” Grey cut them both off. “You are today.” The women just exchanged looks with one another before nodding and simultaneously replying, “Yes, sir.”

chapter 23 of Sycamore Tree is now up !! it had some of my favorite scenes to write so far, so i’m thrilled to be able to finally share it.
some of these upcoming chapters are ones i’ve been looking forward to since day one. chapter 26 has what i consider the best content in the entire work by far while chapters 31-35 were the very first thing i outlined, and this entire concept built up from those ones. cannot wait to get them out to you all. but in the meantime, i really hope you like 23 !!
once again, i simply can’t thank everyone enough for sticking w me on this one. especially after TWO YEARS since chapter 1 went up. that’s wild to me. i sincerely appreciate anyone who’s taken the time to read this.

sycamore tree snippet #20
from chapter 23: "Alder"
Angela patted Nyla on the back. “You all have fun with that,” she said. “We will,” Nyla asserted. “Don’t you have an old man to interrogate?” “Very funny,” Angela replied flatly. “I went by his house. No one was home. Nolan said he went to urgent care. I’m not ambushing an old man at an urgent care. It can wait until the afternoon.” “That’s probably what the ‘urgent’ care told him too.” Bailey perked up. “Are you talking about [our neighbor]?” Angela nodded. “Your fiancé dragged me onto his home invasion case. And so far it’s seeming pretty run-of-the-mill, which means eventually the other shoe is going to drop and this whole thing is going to blow up into some ridiculous world-ending catastrophe.” “Really looking on the bright side, aren’t we?” Nyla teased. “I’m managing my expectations. The last time a coworker pulled me into some random case they caught outside working hours, you know what it was? Thorsen. That thing with [his friend] where we found [the first two acolytes]. You see how that turned out?” She narrowed her eyes and turned to Bailey. “This Sandoval guy—he doesn’t have any… weird disciples running around that I should know about, does he?” “No,” Bailey said. “No cult affiliations? No history of serial killing you can think of? No reason for me to suspect he’s anything but a normal old man?” “Nothing I can come up with.” “Good,” Angela said with a nod. “Better stay that way.”

sycamore tree snippet #19
from chapter 23: "Alder"
“So, Lucy,” Aaron probed, leaning against the lockers to fake casualness. “Have you seen Tim yet today?” “… Why?” “Just wondering,” Aaron stated. “Any time he doesn’t come in, I’m in danger of riding with Smitty. I like to know ahead of time.” Lucy scoffed. “Well, I’m not his keeper. Not sure why you’d think I know where he is at any given time.” “Yeah. I wonder,” Celina teased.

Tim and Lucy visit an open house only to find out the homeowner is an ex-boyfriend. And, sure, it’s been 25 years, but, honestly, he’s just not quite over how the relationship ended. Where’s the harm in some friendly competition?

here it is !! chapter 22 <3
y’all i really do aim to get things out in a timely fashion, but bc of the scale of a project like sycamore tree and the fact that i work full-time it takes me a while to outline and write chapters. for that fic in particular, they average out around 8-9k each… that’s a lot of work for me. given the state of things recently (ahem) i’ve not exactly been in the mood to sit down and write fanfic—esp not for a show about cops. nothing’s being abandoned, but chapter 22 is just gonna take longer than i anticipated. i’d love to say end of november. that’s probably a long shot. just fyi.

sycamore tree snippet #18
from chapter 22: "Spruce"
They arrived around an hour after Percy’s heads-up. Having had ample time to prepare himself, Grey was quite collected when they entered, waving them in and cordially shaking hands before offering seats. Which they declined. He wasn’t pleased; it didn’t seem to him like there was a good-news version of the meeting where they refused to sit down. “It won’t be long,” the Chief on the far right insisted, waving her hand at his offer. “What did he do now?” Grey asked, his voice oozing resignation as his arms settled themselves into their natural position folded over his chest. “Excuse me?” “I assumed you were here about Officer Nolan.” “We’re not,” the Chief replied, visibly perplexed. “Should we be?” asked the Commissioner, his eyes widening and a pressing concern raising in his voice with each word. “No,” Grey said. “Not for any reason I know of.” The brass officers traded confused looks with one another. “I apologize,” Grey interjected. “That’s typically what I get office visits about. I… may have jumped the gun.”

well. here it is.
The Sycamore Tree chapter 21: “Willow”
have fun w it y’all. it’s one of few light chapters in the back half of the fic. the plot is going to kick hard into gear in the next couple.
yes, harder than it already has. this thing is 40 chapters for a reason.
hope you all like the direction this took !! thought i’d experiment a little. the work is supposed to mirror a true season to the best of my ability, and i felt like i’d be remiss not to at least TRY to include a documentary. so i landed on this. it’s way the hell out of my wheelhouse, but i had fun. mostly.
and, of course, thank you for all the support so far. cannot overstate how amazing it is. <3
