I always love the response of "well would you be doing this if it weren't for the money??" As it's some kind of gotcha

No dipshit. Most people wouldn't work most jobs if it weren't for the money. and I can't even say that fully honestly because since I stopped doing sex work I find myself missing it sometimes - i mean I'd still demand payment but I'm just thankfully not in a place of desperation like I was back then. It was a very doable job for me.

And anyone who has ever been around poverty knows that everyone has a "no-go" in terms of jobs - often even regardless of money. "I could never work at McDonald's" is a common one, steadily being replaced with, "I could never work at Amazon". When I was a server people told me all the time that they could never do my job. I feel genuine sympathy for anyone who feels stuck in a job financially -- and I also acknowledge that "I'll just go be a sex worker" isn't the thought process of someone who wasn't already open to it. (This is outside of trafficking/ being forced btw. I'm talking people who pursue it themselves as a job)

Gonna plug here and say I'm a former sex worker and anyone interested should check out my video essay: "FOSTA / SESTA : The Road To Hell" on YouTube (not linking bc I don't want this disappearing from the notes) i talk about some experiences as a sex worker and the harm done by ignoring sex workers and the narrative that only trafficking victims exist

as a dishwasher it is extremely funny to me when sex work is brought up as an abusive exploitative dangerous disgusting profession that must be scrubbed from the economic map of the world before real liberation work can begin, that sex work is where all of the money needs to be raised and laundered spent to stop all of the trafficking of innocent degraded victims who are entirely dissimilar from low level back of house kitchen workers or agricultural workers.
