Hey! So I'm trying to get my art noticed more on tumblr, and I was wondering if you had any tips for getting my art out there? And self-promoting?

Okay, so I think there are two important things you can do to try and get your art out there:

1) Make sure your art will be seen by as many people as possible.

Tag appropriately! The first five tags are especially important as your art will show up in these tags. Also, everything you put in any tags can show up in the search function (I think?)

There are lots of blogs that primarily reblog specific types of art and many of these blogs will accept submissions or will reblog art on request (eg. @femslashrevolution and @fantasyofcolor ) 

2) Make sure that once people have seen your art, it’s easy for them to see more and decide that they want to stick around.

Make sure your art tag is easy to find! Or even better, have an art-only blog and post all your art there.

Make sure your theme is easy to navigate. You don’t want people to be unable to find the ‘next page’ link and give up.

Keep in mind that when people view your blog on mobile they may not be able to click on your art tag if you have one. So try to make sure that when someone views your blog for the first time one of the first few posts they see will be your art.

Also, a note on fanart:

I’m sure you’ve noticed that fanart gets a lot of attention. People will actively look for art of characters or ships they care about, and are more likely to reblog art if they’re emotionally connected to it.

Sometimes you might feel like it’s only worth drawing fanart for popular series because otherwise no one will care about the things you draw. Don’t feel bad if you sometimes feel this way. I see some artists feeling guilty about drawing fanart and no??? don’t??? fanart is fun! And wanting attention is valid!

That said, don’t fall into the trap of drawing fanart for a popular series that you personally don’t care for. There’s no point drawing something you don’t enjoy and while fanart often gets heaps of notes fanart can also pass unnoticed (especially since the tags for popular series are completely flooded). You don’t want to spend time drawing something with the sole goal of getting attention and then not even get that attention. You also don’t want to find yourself feeling obliged to draw fanart for a series you don’t care for.

But if you want to draw fanart, go ahead and draw fanart for things you love! Drawing fanart is still drawing, you’ll learn and develop and get better every time you draw. And the chances are that people who like your fanart will have similar tastes to you and when they check out your blog they might like the other things you draw too :)
