Carter: Of course I remember, Lem! But you don't have to remind me of nice things you did for me in order to get me to do nice things in return. I love helping you no matter what, ESPECIALLY if manuscripts are involved.

Carter: If I'm ever busy though, I find Stella the Second actually quite likes being read to. She might not help you with sorting things out but she reacts appropriately when she really likes a section.

Carter: I hate to tell you this, Miss Magnolia, but most men ARE saying what they mean. It just seems most of the time people are hoping for it to mean something different than what they're hearing.

Carter: Stellas the Third and Fourth and Fifth and all my future dogs would love to have some more friends, though. As a cat alternative.

Miss @claudine--frollo knows I would never ask her to do anything she’s not comfortable with. Right now she seems happy just testing the dating waters and taking things slow, but if that’s a conversation she’s ever ready to have, then of course I’d love to talk to her about that possibility! I haven’t been going on dates with anyone else recently besides her.

I can’t say I’ve ever heard anyone guessing that it was me! I know that’s partly a compliment, seeing as whoever writes all of those things is a talented writer with a great attention to detail and a very active imagination... but oh my, it makes me blush and feel a little sick imagining myself imagining my classmates in those kinds of situations!

Miss @claudine--frollo is another favorite person of mine. She’s so unique and so smart and she’s so brave for being willing to try new things and share her points of view, even if they’re unpopular or if they’re different. I don’t know if she thinks of herself this way, but she’s fearless and beautiful and just a joy to be around.

One can’t help but have a high opinion of Miss @karmeninka. She’s got an amazing mind, so brilliant and insightful and thoughtful and looks at the world in such an interesting way. She’s kind, and caring, and well, I suppose I don’t need to keep gushing about what great company I think she is. She’s a dear friend and one of my favorite people, and while I feel a little guilty that I accidentally bought her away from her fiance... Well, my money went to a great cause, and he’ll get to be with her every day for the rest of their lives, I’m sure he didn’t mind letting me enjoy her company for just a day.

how do you feel about child pageantry?

I’d hate to say anything negative about something that brings some people so much joy. And childhood is when people have the least shame and embarrassment, it’s a great time to get on stage and get comfortable with it before the world teaches you to hold yourself back and be afraid to show people all the sides of you! For me, though, I never really did love being in the spotlight, and unfortunately pageants never did fix that for me.

Carter: Sunday mornings are confusing. Like. I can’t decide if I want to go for a run or start drinking.

Carter: At this time of year, at least. In the wintertime the answer's always to go running, but mama always loved mimosas and mint juleps and mojitos at sunny spring brunches, and she's a great example to follow, if you ask me! (Which you didn't, I'm sorry if that's offering up too much unsolicited information!)

Carter: Woke up eating a pickle on the bathroom floor this morning in some random guys sweat pants.

Carter: Is this what a regular night is like at Gamma Chi? I do declare I couldn't handle this all the time. My neck's already hurting from sleeping in such a terrible position!

Carter: These sweatpants are awfully comfortable, though. How much do you think I'd have to pay to buy them off the owner? Double the original price? Triple?

It took less than a second for Karmen to internally swoon at being called “Miss Karmen” and she cursed herself as it wasn’t just her mind that betrayed her, but her cheeks too by turning pink. “Thank you,” she giggled, walking towards the basket she’d put together resting on the front of a red tandem bike, “but you may not think my basket is quite as nice once we’re done eating and we go on the bike ride. I’m not sure if you’ve ridden a tandem before, but it can take a while to get into sync. We’ll cross that bridge when it comes to it though. Maybe literally, depending on where we decide to ride.” She laughed a little at her own joke before shaking her head. “For now though, let’s find a place to sit. There was a spot under a nearby tree that I was interested in earlier…”

She stood on her toes to check the availability and smiled when she saw it was still free. “And we’re good to go! Shall we?” As she led Carter towards the spot, she bit her lip. Despite her new exciting feels for DJ, she was still experiencing feelings for Carter, and she thought about asking how Claudine was doing in order to quell those feelings, but her mouth couldn’t force the words out and then they were at the spot and she pulled out a colorful alpaca blanket and spread it out for them to sit on. “Please, sit wherever you’d like! I was going to include chairs but I thought a picnic would be more of the authentic ‘picnic’ experience. Not that I’ve ever been on a picnic before,” Karmen admitted with a smile. “I’ve always been too afraid of bugs getting on my food, which is a shame, because there’s something really nice about eating outdoors, right?”

Carter grinned widely. He didn’t want to be rude and contradict Karmen, but it was adorable that she thought riding on a tandem bike would scare him off. After over a year of friendship (and something more under the surface, on his part at least), he didn’t think anything would scare him off, but especially not this. He was a twin, after all; he was good at sharing. “Aw, I’m sure if I can handle a unicycle I can handle something with extra wheels! Besides...” he said, wondering if it was going too far to say more. But friends could be pairs, too, right? That wasn’t exclusively for beautiful, brilliant princesses and their very tall fiances? “I’ve always thought we’d be a pretty great team.”

He hated that he was overthinking something that she’d planned so innocently -- and that she’d obviously planned for someone else. She deserved to have a good day, and besides... he’d been so careful to cover his tracks, to hide his letters when they got too romantic and to not let anyone else know just how much she really meant to him. Carter needed to stop feeling guilty and make sure that his friend had a great day, so he crouched to help her smooth down her blanket. “You seem like a picnic pro to me, Miss Karmen! I mean, the perfect basket, the perfect spot... I never would have guessed it was your first time if you hadn’t told me.” He peered into the basket, trying to see if there were any contents he’d missed before. “If you don’t have bug spray in there, though, it’ll be all right. We can just snack a little faster and then ride off; the bugs won’t be able to keep up with us.”

Karmen’s betrothed had been so good at planning dates this year that when it came time for her to plan a date for them for the picnic basket auction, she of course had to go all out with a feast of her favorite foods, books to read to DJ as they sat on a nice blanket, and a beautiful tandem bike as the piece de resistance. The lovely basket she’d made wasn’t the most exciting part of the day, nor was the planning and execution of her outfit and makeup that she felt particularly attractive in; it was the fact that when it came time for the bidding, DJ’s first bid on her basket actually gave her some butterflies, which was a very good sign for the progress they’d been making.

Then another bid came, almost comically high, and her basket was officially sold to someone else. And not just anyone else, but to Mister Carter La Bouff, the pen pal she’d been trying not to have feelings for so long now. She hated that her heart could simultaneously be disappointed not to get to spend the day with the fiancé she was genuinely feeling things for while also beating a mile a minute at the very idea of Carter. Adding to her confusion, DJ chose then to text and apologize for not bringing the admittedly inordinate amount of money that the La Bouffs brought to such events and to assure her that she should go and have a good time, that he’d buy another basket for charity and the two of them would still get their special Valentine’s Day tomorrow. DJ really was something special.

And he was right too, someone else had outbid him fair and square, and charity was what this event was about, and they would have their date tomorrow, and it was armed with all of those excuses that Karmen found her way to Carter, trying to calm herself enough to greet him. “Hello, Mister Carter! Fancy meeting you here. It’s really very nice to see you.” And it was. Despite being confusing, it was undeniably nice too.

Although Big Grandaddy was always ensuring the La Bouffs had a constant stream of spending money, Carter rarely took advantage of his grandfather’s generosity. The basket auction was one of the few times that he did, and though he knew the amounts that he bid were ostentatious, he rested easy at night knowing it was for a great cause. Sometimes, he just saw a basket and knew it was right; today’s event was no occasion. He’d hardly paid attention to who else was bidding, tossing out an exorbitant amount of money that put other bidders out of the race right from the start. It was only after “Sold” and “Karmen Inka” had been called out that he really processed the fact that DJ Cygnet had been the one to cast the first bid, and he blushed heavily once he did. 

Still... it was no surprise that none of the other baskets stood out to him the way Karmen’s had. He was always feeling that tug towards her, that sense of rightness that came whenever they talked or wrote to each other. In another life, maybe... But it wasn’t another life,  and in this life she was engaged while he was seeing other people. At least in this life it wasn’t a crime to spend time with a friend, and he smiled warmly at her when she greeted him. “It’s very nice to see you too, Miss Karmen,” he told her, wondering where her fiance had scurried off to. Was it good manners to ask if she’d rather go on this date with him? Perhaps, but he knew Karmen well enough to know that she wouldn’t, not after the amount of money his family had just donated, sort of in her name. “I should have known you’d be the person to put together such a nice basket.”

Claudine: I most certainly feel comfortable enough to let you know if I ever did feel like I wanted to change my mind. it means a lot that you're being so considerate about all of it too. I know this whole thing is super confusing to some people and if you ever had any questions you can always ask me.

Claudine: I really enjoyed her in The Big Bang Theory and I always love when an actor/actress moves into a different role after spending a long time as one character. I don't quite understand why it's so appealing to see it but I enjoy it so much! Oh definitely! watching scary things with another person always makes it easier to take in.

Carter: Why of course! I'd never want to make anyone feel uncomfortable, especially not someone who's one of my favorite friends, and you're that first before you're anything else! I'll let you know if I have any questions but it all makes sense to me. People need to do things in their own way and on their own time, nobody else gets to decide for them what's right.

Carter: I guess it helps prove just how talented they really are, if you can be wowed by them being so many different things instead of loving them just as one. I might not be the best protection in the world, though! We might both just end up hiding our eyes under a blanket together if it gets to be too much.
