Dally going out at night in Buck’s truck solely looking for Johnny. Finding him curled up in the lot and gently waking him and guiding him back to Buck’s T-Bird. Promising him it’s no trouble at all.

Dally sneaking Steve food in every way he can, making sure he’s eaten at least one full meal a day and nudging him in the ribs until he does.

Dally staying with Two-bit every time he’s at Buck’s. Making sure he doesn’t drink too much and has a safe place to go after. He’s already lost two family members to a car accident, he’s not about to lose another.

Dally waking up first in the Curtis house, making a pot of coffee “just because”, even though it’s clearly for Darry. Getting Pony up in the mornings and making things just a bit easier for him. (He also folds the laundry, but never tells anyone it’s him.)

Dally who tells Soda he’s cared about, who seems to only show up to tell Soda there’s a race going down at Buck’s just when Pony and Darry start going at it. Who tries not to fight in front of him, lord knows that kid has to deal with it enough.

Dally who has stayed up with Pony dozens of times. Holding the boy in his arms on the couch as Pony sobs, saying that he can’t handle it anymore. Dally just holds him, because god dammit he can’t lose another brother.

Dally who gives Johnny a bed at night.

Dally who sneaks apples and bags of chips into Steve’s lunchbox for work.

Dally who dumps out the bottles and pries Two-bit’s hands off of their glass necks.

Dally who tries his hardest to show Superman he’s not alone.

Dally who gives Soda a break from all the screaming to just have a good time for once.

Dally who hides the blades and Aspirin bottles when Pony gets bad again.

Dally who knows how to care about everyone but himself.

Just, Dally.

Johnny’s other, much more underrated heroic act: standing up to his abusive mother. In the hospital he finally rejects her, finally sees her for who she is and how she treats him, finally stops chasing her love.

Johnny saves everyone else - he saves Pony physically from the Socs and then emotionally with his letter, he saves the kids, he saved Dally just by existing - but before he dies, Johnny finally saves himself.

More AU thoughts:

How the story would have played out if Darry hadn’t hit Ponyboy causing him to run away. Because even if Pony had been at home while the Socs were driving around looking for them, Johnny still would have been in the lot.

The Socs didn’t find them in the lot, they found them in the park where they walked after Pony ran to Johnny. So it’s possible that if Johnny had stayed in the lot, the Socs wouldn’t have found him and would have eventually gone home and the whole thing never would have happened.

But it’s very likely that the Socs would have just gone out the next night, and the next, until they eventually got one or both of them.

Or the Socs would have found Johnny in the lot alone, and beaten the shit out of him like last time. Maybe they would even have killed him. Johnny definitely would try to use his blade, but it would be harder if he was the sole target.

If Johnny did manage to stab one of them, he still would have gone to Dally who would have sent him to Windrixville alone. Maybe the fire still would have happened and Johnny still would have run in to save the kids and died the same way.

Maybe Johnny wouldn’t have run into the fire if Ponyboy hadn’t run in first. Or maybe the fire wouldn’t have happened at all. In that case, maybe Johnny would have insisted on turning himself in even if not for Pony’s sake but rather out of remorse and his own sense of right and wrong, in which case he definitely would have received the harshest sentence possible. Probably life in prison, maybe even the death penalty.

Or maybe Johnny would have listened to Dally and remained on the run, and that’s the last they would have heard of Johnny. Maybe Dally would go with him, not wanting to stick around without Johnny, but in a less suicidal sense. And instead of dying on the same night, they would just disappear together.
