i still think tomomori's actions in his tragic end are the most patently romantic thing ever btw. if a man's response to your death isn't to slaughter dozens of innocent bystanders on the spot before committing suicide then what's the point

yeahhhh it really ticks me off that people got through a scene of reira saying "what am i worth if i quit singing?" and are still unable to come up with anything else about her character other than "what a spoiled brat"
#i understand not liking her as a person and the whole thing w shin is very icky indeed; it makes her a child predator even though#aizawa doesn't seem to have intended it that way#but the fact that she's reduced to just a 'pampered princess who doesn't understand the world' type of person grinds my gears so bad. y'all#see a female character who acts flighty and immature sometimes and will instantly flatten her in your minds into an airheaded idiot with#nothing at all going on in her character and story. and it's very telling!#and ofc nobody talks about takumi's emotional abuse of her. which he himself admits to!#he doesn't admit it was abuse (idt he sees it that way) but he admits with his own mouth what his treatment did to her#nana tag#serizawa layla#serizawa reira#layla serizawa#reira serizawa#reira nana#nana reira#layla nana#nana layla#ichinose takumi#takumi ichinose#takumi nana#nana takumi#nana#yazawa ai#ai yazawa

Other formal outfits of Heian ancestry - Kariginu, Hoi and Nôshi attires
(as worn by samurai of the Edo period - great charts by Nadeshico Rin). You can find more about samurai ranks and their regulated attires under the tag "samurai kimono".
The Kariginu

狩衣 Kariginu first appeared during Heian period where they were informal attires worn by kuge (nobibilty) men for activities such as hunting and 蹴鞠 kemari ball games.
Kariginu rose to formal status during Kamakura period when it started being worn by the buke (warrior class). In Edo period, it was worn by upper-ranked samurai (4th rank and above).
Edo-period kariginu designates a patterned clothing (different from the hoi, see below), often decorated with the family 紋 mon (crest). Colors were not regulated.
風折烏帽子 Kazaori-eboshi - black-lacquered hat made of silk, cloth or paper, originally worn by Heian nobility. Many eboshi shapes exist, this one is a upright style (tate-eboshi 立烏帽子) with top folded to the left.
末広 Suehiro - a type of formal folding fan. TN: the fan drawn here ressemble more a 中啓 chûkei, as suehiro have curving ribs which don't seems to be the case here (find more about fan types here)
指貫 sashinuki (or 奴袴 nubakama) - large bouffant pants. Also, note the bare feet! Rin doesn't comment this but this was probably a way to put it below sokutai and ikan (which do have socks)
袖括 Sodekukuri - decorative sleeve ties. Originally appeared on Heian clothings (like kariginu, nôshi, etc) where they were used to tighten sleeve cuffs.
The Hoi

布衣 Hoi is a variation of 狩衣 kariginu (see above).
During Edo period, it was worn by some hatamoto (6th rank samurai) via explicit permission of the shogunate - setting those rewarded by this honor apart from other vassals of the same rank.
Compared to kariginu, hoi were plain solid color.
It is worn here over a 熨斗目 noshime, a samurai kosode (=ancestor of the kimono) with stripes or lattice pattern at waist area.
As for the kariginu, note the bare feet!
The Nôshi

直衣 Nôshi was a type of everyday robes which were first worn by males of the imperial family during Heian era. Formality placed it then above kariginu.
Overtime, their use spread among nobility, and by Edo period, they were a "tad-formal" attire worn by Shogun's family for worship celebrations.
立烏帽子 Tate-eboshi - upright lacquered hat
袍 Hô - round-necked robe with large boxy sleeves
檜扇 hiôgi - formal folding fan made of cypress, also of Heian history. Those were unpatterned as painted ones were for women
指貫 Sashinuki (or 奴袴 nubakama) - large bouffant pants

Formal outfits for upper ranks samurai & Most formal for lesser ranks samurai - Hitatare, Daimon and Suô court dress,
(as worn by samurai of the Edo period - great charts by Nadeshico Rin). You can find more about samurai ranks and their regulated attires under the tag "samurai kimono".
The Hitatare

直垂 Hitatare first appeared as an attire worn by lower class warriors. As buke (warrior class) rose into status, it was slowy established as a formal garb for samurai during Kamakura period.
In Edo period, hitatare was the most formal attire worn by samurai of the 3rd rank and above. Fabrics used were luxurious, such as 精好織 seigo-ori (a type of textured silk, also used for Shinto priest clothing nowadays).
風折烏帽子 Kazaori-eboshi - black-lacquered hat made of silk, cloth or paper, originally worn by Heian nobility. Many eboshi shapes exist, this one is a upright style (tate-eboshi 立烏帽子) with top folded to the left.
袴 Hakama - formal pants, more exactly 長袴 nagabakama trailing pants
小さ刀 Chîsagatana - a small decorative katana
胸紐 Munahimo - chest ties, first appeared on Heian nobility clothes
菊綴 Kikutoji - decorative tassel-like knots, first appeared on Heian nobility clothes
袖括 Sodekukuri - decorative sleeve ties. Originally appeared on Heian clothings (like kariginu, nôshi, etc) where they were used to tighten sleeve cuffs. Later types like the tiny ones above are purely decorative.
The Daimon

The 大紋 daimon is a specific hitatare set patterned with large 紋 mon (clan/family crests). It was worn by fifth court rank samurai (rank of the daimyô lords for example).
It was put over a 熨斗目 noshime, a type of kosode (=ancestor of the kimono) worn by samurai, with stripes or lattice pattern around waist area.
The Suô

The 素襖 Suô, also a variation of the hitatare, was the ceremonial dress of the lower-ranked samurai. Via explicit permission of the shogunate, some samurai could be granted the right to wear 布衣 hoi (a type of kariginu).
It looked very similar to daimon set, but showed fewer crests of much smaller size. The hat was also different as they wore one called a 侍烏帽子 samurai eboshi.

Siona peeled her face mask aside but held it in her hand for quick restoration. "How much longer until we find water?" she asked. "Three nights." "Is there a better direction to go?" "No."

The morning light was harsh on her face. "I promise you nothing!" "Nor do I require that." "But you will give me… water if I ask?" "It is not just water." She nodded. "And I am Atreides."

She leaned toward the drops. He saw the pores beside her nose, the way her tongue moved as she drank.

Without asking permission, she tapped his front segment, demanding that he prepare the warm hammock of his flesh. He obeyed. She fitted herself to the gentle curve. By peering sharply downward, he could see her.

A storage-chamber in Menegroth, a few years into the First Age, while a feast celebrating the beginning of summer is held
“What are you two doing in here? What happened?”
Melian was mildly concerned.
“Well…” Lúthien answered with barely concealed laughter in her voice, though she still stroked her father’s back sympathetically. “… apparently, the sun. Though of course, that did hardly happen, now did it?”
Melian sighed, but before she could say anything to it, Elu spoke, his voice muffled as he still had his face hidden against his knees, curling himself up as much as earthly possible.
“I’m fine. I will join you in a moment. It’s just…”
“… the light. And the feast, which means more people than usual. And having to actually eat, not just sneak lembas from under my nose. Oh Elu, do you really think I did not expect that? It is not as though I haven’t know you for a few millennia…”
Lúthien giggled.
“But… how can that bother you so? Dealing with others is kind of an occupational hazard of being king. And the story at least goes that you wanted to go to Valinor because of precisely that light?”
“Lúthien!"
Melian’s tone was reproachful, though when she met her daughter’s gaze, both had to bite their lips to prevent themselves from bursting into laughter.
Elu raised his head enough to look at Lúthien as well.
“True. But you know, at Cuiviénen, the lords would reign for a time, then, when they had enough, would give rule over to their sons…”
“Ah poor you, thus deprived with only having a daughter….” Lúthien mocked, at which Elu looked sternly back at her.
“And who says that I have to keep the traditions of my Sires? You are my flesh and blood, so I see no hinderance there. Or have I ever made you feel as though I could value a son more than you?”
Lúthien laughed.
“No. But you know as well as I do that this will never happen, that I will never be queen. And you don’t mean it, either.”
Elu had again lowered his head, so when he spoke, his voice was muffled once again.
“If giving up kingship means I never have to deal with feasts again, then I am serious!”
Now Melian giggled as well, even whilst crouching down beside her husband and tenderly stroking his head.
“I don’t think it would, actually. Unless of course you intend to go live with Eöl. That might help with the sunlight, too…”
It was very clear from her tone that she was jesting, but even so, Elu looked aghast at her.
“Never. If that is the alternative, I take the feast, thanks.”
He rubbed his knuckles against his forehead for a moment, then added:
“You two go ahead. I will be fine, I only need a moment!”
Lúthien, however, would not hear of it.
“That would look stupid. And you won’t be fine until you are in the hall, so it’s best to get it over with quickly. Come on!”
And with that, she mercilessly pulled her father to his feet and out into the light.

i know this is a very surface-level reading of the situation but it never fails to get me how even when utena has been (temporarily) emotionally shattered by losing a duel to touga she still shows zero receptivity to his incessant flirting and attempts to cajole her into a date. like he really sits there and hovers all over her (being a creep, let us not lose sight of that) trying to rizz her up and the whole time she can't even be bothered to turn her face and acknowledge that he is present in her life and using the oxygen he breathes in to try to talk to her

Fuck it, relationships in Nana as Taylor Swift songs part 2.
You can read part 1 (Nana and Ren) here! Takumi and Reira - Hoax In a story full of dysfunctional relationships, this pair manages to be most destructive of them all. Takumi and Reira cannot exist with or without one another. Reira hates Takumi even though he is all she wants. Ren summarizes this perfectly: “Reira says she wants to be happy like a normal person. But to me, it seems she just wants to go to hell with you.” She despises Takumi, thinks he belongs to hell, and her home is wherever he is. Metaphorically, Takumi and Reira sailed away on a ship, with a goal in their mind. She misses the land, flowers, smell of freshly baked bread. Ever crashing waves makes her sick, sun burns her skin, she wants to get out or she will explode. She doesn’t have the courage to request this from Takumi, because this mutual goal, this journey is the foundation of their love. If she gets off, what will happen to them? Reira loves Takumi so desperately, she will stand by him as the waves rock their ship, and hate him for leading it (not me suddenly being an English teacher😭). Anyways, Reira wants to destroy anything Takumi treasures, and her beautiful voice that cursed their relationship is on top of her list.

“My only one My smoking gun My eclipsed sun This has broken me down My twisted knife My sleepless night My win-less fight This has frozen my ground” As for Takumi, he is cursed with consciousness. He is hyper-aware of his inability to form meaningful connections, to treasure and love someone properly. That’s why he tries to keep an arm distance with Reira (keyword being ‘try’). He has devoted her entire being to Reira, ensuring her happiness, her success is the primary goal in his life. He built a kingdom, just so Reira can sit on the throne. He almost considers her as an ethereal being. Since he holds her in such a high regard, this false perception combined with his general lack of empathy inevitably drags Reira to ultimate misery. She is not sitting in the throne Takumi built for her; she is in the dungeons, held captive by this love. “Stood on the cliffside Screaming, “Give me a reason” Your faithless love’s the only hoax I believe in Don’t want no other shade of blue But you No other sadness in the world would do” If I had to describe Takumi’s love in one word it would be faithless. Second would be devoted. That’s how contradictory his actions and feelings are. “My best laid plan Your sleight of hand My barren land I am ash from your fire” Reira is Takumi’s pièce de résistance. Trapnest is his masterpiece that he has sacrificed everything to maintain. “You know I left a part of me back in New York You knew the hero died, so what’s the movie for? You knew it still hurts underneath my scars From when they pulled me apart” I think Reira -just like Shin, has always felt like torn apart because she is mixed race. She loves New York, her mother is there and refuses to come to Japan she has many reasons to live there. But she stays. For Takumi. The media, paparazzis, general public literally pulled Reira apart. She has faced every repercussion of being a public figure, was under in constant pressure to maintain her facade, met everyone’s - her band mate’s, her agency’s, fan’s, journalist’s, Shin’s, Takumi’s expectations and she was always inadequate in one way or another. “You knew the password, so I let you in the door You knew you won, so what’s the point of keeping score? You knew it still hurts underneath my scars From when they pulled me apart But what you did was just as dark Darling, this was just as hard As when they pulled me apart” What happens next? Reira crumbles under the pressure, afraid of dying alone as Takumi builds a pseudo-family with Hachi. She begs for his love and Takumi grants her the honesty that he never showed any other women. “Do you really want to be one of my many lovers?” Even to her queen, Takumi his unable to offer his full loyalty. Desperate, Reira accepts. But she feels even more used, exploited, taken advantage of. Even though Takumi obliged, Reira feels completely worthless in the eyes of the man she loves so helplessly. She is full of resentment and anger. “My only one My kingdom come undone My broken drum You have beaten my heartDon’t want no other shade of blue But you No other sadness in the world would do” Being a workaholic was a defining characteristics of Takumi throughout the series, but later on we find out that it’s only for Reira’s happiness. There is no point of Trapnest’s existence unless she is content. Takumi’s intentions are never to monopolize Reira’s voice, he just wanted to see Reira on top of the kingdom, where he thinks she belongs. In the end, it’s his songbird who causes the kingdom’s fall. Reira deprives Takumi of her voice, refuses to sing for anyone but his son (who she should hate, but can’t). In a way, I find their story more tragic than Nana and Ren’s. Their love is so solid that you can almost touch it with your hand, but they don’t know how to handle it. Reira’s voice that bewitched Takumi, and it becomes the downfall of their love. I don’t think they can ever be together or separate from each other. I don’t believe they will ever be really happy, it’s so hopeless. These lovers are truly the demise of one another and will never ever be freed. Hachi once said that “people need to connect. Otherwise they are just bound by hand and foot.” - or something along those lines and think that’s how Reira and Takumi will die. Unable to connect, to love each other yet unable to seperate, bound by hand and foot.
