astronomy club sent up a weather balloon w a gopro in it last friday. put in three packs of fruit snacks so they could have a giggle over eating fruit snacks that had been to space.

balloon went up into inner space, about 90,000 feet. came down right near the dinosaur park. a few physics teachers drive out to get it, crack it open on the way home to start watching the footage.

fruit snacks are missing.

multiple sources confirm that fruit snacks were put in balloon and sealed in with duct tape. physics teachers check entire balloon. no fruit snacks.

physics teachers watch footage. all 7 hours of it. right in the middle of footage, there are about 8 minutes of visual and audio static when balloon is in orbit. no other interference with balloon recorded.

conclusions: ???????

Hmmmmm okay some Thoughts™️ for the evening:

• Dean is bi. Dean has always been bi. Dean was bi before he met Cas, he was bi in seasons 1-3, he was bi in the timeline of the show before s1, and he is bi independent of his love and attraction to Cas even after he meets him. This is canon. To joke otherwise is to reduce a bi characeter’s sexuality to being about his partner.

• “The very touch of you corrupts” isn’t about being queer. Saying that, even jokingly, equates queerness to corruption—and canonically, that’s not even what that line is about. It’s about having emotions, and caring, and falling from grace, and being human. It’s about love and compassion. It’s about “too much heart was always Castiel’s problem” and “you changed me, Dean.” Dean inspired all of that in Cas, which the other angels saw as a bad thing and thus deemed corruption because Cas was fallen... so this line was said as a taunt and it preys on Dean’s fears that he’s poison and negatively impacts everyone around him. But Dean didn’t have to do anything but exist for Cas to love him, and that was never a bad thing.

saw an elderly woman walking around with a tote bag whose design were the four AO3 fic category squares and she very excitedly asked if i was a reader or a writer bcs nobody else at the con had recognized it, and after telling her that i've been writing fic since fanfic.net, she solemnly nodded and explained that she'd been reading fic since "the days of personal websites" but that she only started writing fanfic when she was 47 and oh my god when i tell you that i genuinely teared up on the spot!!!!! like!!! HELL YEAH???? LITERALLY NEVER TOO OLD TO START WRITING. NEVER TOO OLD TO WRITE AND SHARE YOUR FIC.

her enthusiastic "i'm a very nice and bubbly person, i swear! but i love writing angst and major character death :)" nearly took me the fuck out.

more thoughts on "who would dean have a harder time living without, sam or cas?" that i didn't want to dump on the poll

there are two scenarios here: 1) they're dead, or 2) they're alive and dean knows they're doing fine, but they're not in his life.

in the first scenario, the answer is objectively and provably cas. sam died and dean did his best to live a peaceful life with ben and lisa, and mostly succeeded. cas dies and dean kills himself the first chance he gets.

it’s not a matter of who he cares about more! he cares about them differently, it's not something you can compare like that. also, dean is capable of surviving the deaths of people he loves very dearly despite enormous grief (mary, jack, bobby, charlie, sam in s6 etc.). the deaths he doesn’t survive are sam in s2 (suicide via demon deal), cas in s12 (suicide via syringe), and cas in the finale (suicide via rebar, though you can argue this one).

the reason dean trades his life for sam’s in s2 isn’t because he can’t live without sam, it’s because he still believes that his entire purpose in life is to protect sam, and that he’s worth nothing if he’s failed that, with bonus guilt on top that john already died for him. the grief is a contributing factor but the guilt of failure is what kills him. and i don’t think he would have killed himself if it wouldn’t have gotten sam back. because when sam dies in s6 dean struggles and is depressed and grieving but he's trying, and it’s still the best year of lisa’s life. and that was with cas gone and while also trying to shove a lifetime of ptsd under the rug!

when cas dies in s7 dean is depressed and passively suicidal to a degree that terrifies sam and bobby. when cas dies in s12 dean kills himself 5 episodes later. and when cas dies at the end of s15 dean is dead within six months, in a way that very much reads as at least passive suicide. when cas is dead, dean does not want to live. and we are shown several times that despite his best efforts, sam is not capable of picking up the pieces and getting dean through that loss.

in the second scenario, alive but apart, imo the answer is also cas. at least by the end of the show.

sam is the little brother dean raised. he loves him, he'd miss him like hell if they couldn't ever talk or see each other again, but ultimately dean's happiest ending has always been one where sam is living an independent, happy, fulfilling and (relatively) safe life. it would just majorly suck if they couldn't be a part of each other's lives at all. your kids grow up, yk?

cas on the other hand is, by the end of the show, dean's chosen life partner. by the time romantic confessions happen, cas and dean have already been filling the role of spouse for each other for actual years. cas is the person dean leans on for support, both practical and emotional. cas is the person who sees him clearly and who he chooses to open up to. dean is far, far more resilient when cas is around! not having cas in his life means not just losing the life they had and the future dean wanted to build together, but also losing his emotional rock and the person he, a chronic caretaker in most of his relationships, is most comfortable relying on for support. so in that sense I think life without cas would be harder than life without sam.

Sam: Wh- dude I know how to spell! But we've been spelling your name as Cass-two-Ss this entire time. That's how you spell Cass!

Cas: We? As in, both of you? And - not Bobby surely? He knew how to spell my name?

Sam: Look, look, look I can prove it. [Pulls out his Blackberry that he's kept since 2009 and scrolls up a text chain with Dean] Look, "CASS said we're all boned." That's like two days after he met you.

Cas: I- this is...ah I understand. You faked this. You're doing a prank on me. Some sort of Gabriel-esque unreality game. I will not be fooled again, as I was when you showed me the video of "house hippos". Well played, Sam, but not well enough.

Sam: I'm not- urgh, [calling out] DEAN

Dean [yelling back from the kitchen] YEAH?

Sam: HOW DO YOU SPELL CASS? ONE S OR TWO?

Dean: HOW LONG HAVE YOU KNOWN HIM, MAN? IT RHYMES WITH ASS. TWO.

Sam: see? And Dean gave you that name so really, he's the authority. You're Cass.
