"Do you take constructive criticism?" "Not without crying."
"Are we all on the same page?" "Yes. Just of different books."

i’m thinking about the night of the crash, and barry would have been so happy to see his boyfriend win, he wanted to come celebrate with victor and his mom but he’s so busy with study and all the jobs he has to work to pay for it and that’s the only reason he wasn’t with them when the crash happened. he’d drop everything the moment he got the news, wouldn’t even care about anyone seeing him use his ability, and the whole night he’d sit there and he’d hold victor’s hand until he had to be dragged away from him so they could take his body away. and he’d blame himself too, if he had been there, he would have been fast enough to save them, even if deep down he knew that it wasn’t true, he’d never stop blaming himself, especially after what happened with iris, he’d been fast enough to save her, so why couldn’t he save them?
when he sees victor again he thinks his grief might be driving him crazy, but when victor wraps his arms around him and hugs him so tight barry is sure he heard something pop, he just cries.

three times barry held ezekiel and one time he didn’t
set before suicide squad, during, and then during justice league
the order will not follow regular "three times blank and one time blank" instead it will be one two, one, three
i'm taking inspiration for my angel being from multiple sources, including the constantine movie, supernatural (sigh) as well as adding my own ideas in:) all angels are genderless, however ezekiel most commonly presents masculine, i envision cillian murphy, specifically from the early 2000's for this character

———
one
their meeting had been less than normal, barry was out on his nightly patrol when he'd come across the warehouse. like most of the other hundreds that laid throughout gotham, nothing seemed out of the ordinary, in fact he was almost ready to completely brush past it, until he'd heard the bloodcurdling, tortured screams coming from inside. the sound froze him in place, eyes wide as he looked towards the door of the warehouse. the screams continued as he cautiously approached, and he knew he should have called the cops, but he couldn't stand here and listen to those screams while he waited for someone else to get here, so with a deep breath he pushed open the big warehouse door just enough to let himself in. as soon as he did, however, a hot white light burst from within, and another scream, different to whoever had been screaming before. now, he really should have called for help, but as he stepped more into the  warehouse, the fear that filled him kept him from even being able to think clearly.
in the middle of the warehouse, lay a table. it looked like it had been pulled straight from an operating room, but most worrying was the tools surrounding it, and worst of all, the blood. it was everywhere, a trail led towards the dark corner of the warehouse, and slowly, he stepped forward, fear and adrenaline rushing through him as he went to investigate whatever it was that had caused all this blood, but when he saw it, his heart sank. something- someone, yes, he could just barely make out legs behind the giant wings, sat curled up in the corner. at the sound of his footsteps, the person curled up more, bringing their blood matted wings closer in. their breathing was quick and panicked and barry was so stunned by the sight in front of him, he had no idea what to do.
cautiously, as if he were afraid the injured stranger in front of him might shatter like glass, he knelt down, speaking as quietly and as softly as he could. "i'm not gonna hurt you, i promise" he tried to reassure the other, and it was enough to coax them into peak their face out from behind their once pristine white, now dirty and disheveled wings, their stark white eyes looking up at him with fear. silently, they reached out to point over towards the body that lay feet away, that was most definitely lacking eyes much to barry's dismay. he shook his head though and spoke a gentle "they can't get you now", holding out a hand which the other flinched back at for a moment before they cautiously took it. it was only as they slowly lowered their wings and tried stand that barry could see the extent of their injuries, along with their bareness, enough to make him look away and cover his eyes in both parts awkwardness and inability to handle the pure horror that this person had suffered.
burns, from what he didn't know, though they were frequent across their body, along with the deep purple bruises, all fresh. worst of all though, the slashes that ran down their body where barry could only assume their wings would lay. they were deep and long, from just above their ankle, wrapping around their hips and all the way up to their shoulder blades. no wonder they couldn't stand, barry couldn't even begin to wonder how they hadn't bled out yet, but he knew it would only get worse if he didn't act fast. in both an attempt to keep their modesty and keep them from loosing any more blood he rushed through the warehouse to try and find something to cover them, landing in some sort of fabric, possibly a covering of some sort, and wrapped them in it.
the poor stranger, who's name he still hasn't gotten, let out one of the most painful sounds he had ever heard as he covered them, and when he asked if they could walk they shook their head no, still attempting before they hit the ground with a yelp, the sound like nails on a chalkboard to him. as he knelt down again to help them, the glaring issue of their wings became apparent, but before he could even ask they slowly and ever so gently folded them, and he watched in bewildered amazement as they seem to vanish in to thin air. it was only then that he realised during all of this he'd been too stunned to call for help, and as he cautiously lifted the he other up, he went to call the police. the stranger, who's name barry still didn't know, clung to him, hiding their face in his neck and letting out hisses and groans of pain at each slight movement. when barry told them he was calling for help, they looked back up at him and frantically shook their head no, pointing once again to the body from before. from their reaction, barry could only guess that whoever that was, or whoever they worked for, had enough connections that not even the police would be safe. though, he wasn't exactly shocked, he'd seen first hand just how bad they could be at actually catching people who did such horrible things. he knew that they couldn't go to the hospital either, if the police were no good then the hospital was just as risky, and so with nowhere else to go, barry took them to the only place he could think of, his unoficial, technically not legal, 'lair'. it wasn't much, but it was all he had, and definitely a step up from this hell-hole. that night as barry stitched up the injured stranger the best he could, they finally spoke their first words to barry, an almost inaudible "thank you" before they gave him their name, ezekiel. barry had known right from that moment, that he felt something for ezekiel, though it took him much longer to realise that it was more than just the need to protect them.
two
in the time since that first night, the two had grown much closer. after all, they now technically lived together. ezekiel told barry about their home, a place hidden away from humans. it hadn't aways been that way though. as they had explained to him, many years ago they had lived alongside humans, serving as their protectors. the humans had viewed them as gods at first, leaving offerings in exchange for their protection and help, but soon, they had grown greedy. the humans began to take advantage of their kindness, stealing from them and leaving nothing in return. soon, it turned to violence, the humans came to their homes in the forests and hunted them down, driving them out until they all had no choice but to flee, somewhere no humans would find them. by the time they were able to flee, the violence towards them had taken its toll, so many of them left dead or injured, and they had never recovered. there were hardly any of them left still alive to this day, and when their hideaway had been discovered by whoever had taken them, ezekiel had been one of the only ones to escape, though it wasn't much use, and they had still ended up being caught.
ezekiel had healed physically since the night barry had found them, though the deep, jagged scars across their body still remained, barry still felt guilty for his haphazard stitching abilities, but they would have died if he had just done nothing. while they had healed physically, mentally they were still as ruined as the night they had met barry. they couldn't stand not being around him, whenever he would leave for one of his various jobs ezekiel would spend the next hours till he got home pacing around the warehouse, anxiously anticipating his return, and each time he came back their mood was immediately lifted. barry wouldn't deny that he liked it, seeing ezekiel so happy after everything they had been through.
while they always wanted to be around him, they were very sensitive when it came to any physical contact, and barry really couldn't blame them at all, after all they had been through. barry was just getting ready for his nightly patrol when ezekiel flew down from where they were perched atop one of the beams that ran through the ceiling, their favourite spot to sit, 'because you can see the moon perfectly from here' as they always told him. "i think you should stay home tonight" they spoke quietly as they sat down (in barry's second favourite chair, but he never minded when it came to them) and began to groom their wings. barry shook his head, slipping on his helmet and smiling at them small. "i'll be fine, you know i can handle my self" he tried his best to reassure them, he knew they only worried like this because they had already lost so much.
ezekiel shook their head, looking up at him. "bad feeling.." they murmured, their english had been getting better too, and barry was relieved because apparently no one had created a pocket dictionary for whatever language they spoke, and that made communication pretty hard sometimes. "i promise i'll be fine, i know you don't like being left alone so i'll go as fast as i can, alright?" it still wasn't enough to satisfy them, but barry really did have to go, so all he could do was give them a small wave and promise to be back soon before he was off.
how they had been so right, he had no clue. probably had to do with the whole angle thing, right? whatever it was, barry was mentally kicking himself for not having listened to them as he trudged home, wincing at the large gash across his thigh. apparently word had begun to spread about him, criminals were even more vigilant now, and barry, being much too confident, hadn't accounted for the fact that just maybe he should have actually spent a little more time paying attention to his surroundings. he hadn't noticed in time to get away fast enough, so the bullet had hit him enough to break the skin and be /really/ fucking painful, enough to keep him from being able to run, and that had only made it even worse. he'd barely made it out, and by the time he finally made it back sunlight had already began to spill over the horizon.
ezekiel had been pacing around since the moment barry left, only growing more worried as time passed. they knew they couldn't leave to look for him, it wasn't safe for them to be out on their own yet, but they were quickly beginning to grow past that worry the longer barry remained absent. when the door to the warehouse finally began to creak open ezekiel quickly flew down from the beam they'd been pacing across, eyes widening as they looked at a disheveled, bleeding barry. "i should really start listening to you" he gave a tired, half hearted laugh, and ezekiel was silent as they quickly moved forward to wrap their arms around him. the move stunned barry, who was used to them avoiding any and all physical contact, but he hugged back none the less. "you had been gone so long, i thought.." they trailed off, and barry held them close as he rested his chin on top of their head. "i'm sorry" he spoke quietly, the throbbing in his leg enough to make him pull back to sit down.
this time it was ezekiel stitching him up, though with much more precision than what barry had, and significantly more pain medication (that barry had rushed out to get the second ezekiel was no long bleeding out that first night) and as barry watched them, his mind wandered back to how tightly ezekiel had wrapped their arms around him, and how nice it had felt. he couldn't help but blush at it, and ezekiel, who had noticed straight away, only smiled, finishing the stitches with a gentle peck, 'a human tradition, correct?' and it had barry more flustered than he would ever admit.
this night, ezekiel didn't take to their usual spot perched up in one of the windowsill, instead, barry felt the bed dip under their weight, and his eyes widened, even more so when ezekiel moved up behind him and wrapper their arms around him, head resting on his shoulder. what had caused this sudden change in mood? barry could only assume it had to do with what had happened tonight, but he most definitely wasn't going to complain, in fact, he quickly spun around to face them, even in the dark he could make out their gentle smile, and he pulled them close, spending the rest of the night holding them in his arms.
one
since ezekiel had first hugged him that night, the two had grown even closer, and ezekiel soon felt safe enough to be outside, of course only with barry at their side every moment, but barry was more than happy to abide by that, it meant he got to hold their hand, at all times, and he absolutely loved it. sometimes though, they still got scared. no matter how many times barry assured them that they would be safe, that no one would know, they always tensed up and gripped his hand just a little tighter whenever someone would look for a little too long. even with their unnaturally plain white eyes hidden behind dark glasses they still worried someone would notice, someone who wanted to hurt them, or even barry, maybe someone who worked for the man who had taken them.
though neither of them had built up the courage to make a move, it was obvious to anyone who saw them that they both cared deeply for each other, barry had been debating for weeks on how best to finally just confess to them, and finally he decided he needed to just push aside all his worries of rejection, because both of them were completely oblivious to the others feelings, and just tell them. they were out already when he'd finally decided, ezekiel laid down with their head in his lap as he played with their hair. "hey, z, i gotta tell you something.." he started out. ezekiel let out a quiet hum, pushing themself to sit up and face him. suddenly, the little bit of confidence he'd built up in that moment vanished. being face to face with them only made him worry, what if they didn't like him back? barry didn't think he could handle loosing them, the idea alone already making him regret even starting to speak up.
ezekiel interrupted his thoughts though, reaching a hand out to tuck a stray stand of hair behind his ear before they spoke. "what is wrong?" they asked, tilting their head with a worried frown. even with the glasses barry could see the concern in their eyes, and it made him feel terrible. he had to just get this over with, it was now or never. "i- i like you... like,
/like/ like you.. a lot"  he spoke so quietly ezekiel almost couldn't hear him, but when they realised what he had said, their worried frown turned into a grin. "i like you too" they leapt forward and threw their arms around him, and barry was so stunned for a moment he didn't hug back. once he did though, he couldn't help the grin that rose to his face. "thank god, i wanted to tell you for ages but every time i started i just chickened out because i thought you weren't gonna like me back and then it would have just been awkward and then-" his rambling was cut short when ezekiel kissed him, and barry quickly kissed back, bringing a hand up to gently cup the back of their head. when the kiss eventually broke, he smiled against their lips, and they laughed softly, it truly was the most beautiful sound barry had ever heard.
their happiness had been cut short, however, when a man sat mere feet away from them began to mutter just loud enough for them both to hear, and while ezekiel had no idea what any of it meant, barry knew exactly what he was saying. it made him sigh, and ezekiel frowned again at that, opting to lean in and kiss him again to try and raise his spirits. the man next to him hadn't been so quiet the second time around. "do you really have to do that out in public? there's kids out here" he sneered, and barry rolled his eyes, gesturing towards the array of other couples walking around the park holding hands or sitting together around them. "they're doing the same thing as us" he shrugged, taking ezekiel's hands again.
ezekiel had never known this type of hatred, where they had come from, love was celebrated between all those grown, there were no genders, those who were grown simply chose whoever they loved. they couldn't understand why the man was so upset by when he continued his rant. "it's not natural, you're both men, keep that shit to yourself" while barry grew irritated and was more than ready to leave, ezekiel was simply curious. "i am not a man" they stated, and that only drew a laugh from the man. "you're born either a man or a woman, you can't change basic biology" barry had heard more than enough by that point and he was more than ready to go, standing up and gently tugging ezekiel's hand to motion for them to follow him. "c'mon, this guys just an asshole" he muttered, but ezekiel was still confused. "i was not born a man or a woman, i am neither, i do not think you understand" they smiled at the stranger, who only glared back in return, rising to stand.
that instantly made ezekiel tense up, and barry wasted no time in pushing ezekiel behind him. "are you calling me stupid?" he spoke lowly, and ezekiel stayed silent this time, hiding behind barry who answered for them. "on top of being a bigoted asshole, yeah" he glared back, and this seemed to anger the man even more. less than a fraction of a second later, the man had begun to raise his hand to punch him, but before even barry could move, ezekiel was in between the two, wings outstretched to keep barry behind them as the glasses they wore lay discarded on the ground, ready to smite the man at a moments notice. barry placed a gentle hand on their arm, trying to calm them and draw their attention towards him, he knew that they needed to get out of here as soon as possible now that people had seen, some had already been to flee, while others stood to watch. "hey, c'mon, it's not worth putting yourself in danger over" he tried to coax them into back down, but as they slowly began to lower their wings, a gunshot rang out, and ezekiel fell against him with a pained gasp, their blood having splashed against his face as a bullet fired off by a terrified cop tore through their shoulder.
the officer loaded his gun ready to fire again, but barry raised a hand, calling out for him to lower his weapon. "please- they didn't hurt anyone!" he pleaded, stumbling to the ground as they squirmed in pain from the bleeding wound in their shoulder. the gun stayed trained on them, and the officer called out with a shaky breath, ordering him to step away. barry refused, holding them close as they desperately clung to him. he couldn't run, he knew that, they had been seen, cops would be on the lookout for them if they ran now, and there was no way barry could get that bullet out and stitch them back up on his own. they were trapped, and as the officer slowly approached and yelled for him to get back, ezekiel sobbed into his chest and begged him not to let go, and he didn't, not till the officer had called for backup and ezekiel had been dragged from his arms screaming, pleading not to be taken away from barry.
the rest of the day had been full of interrogation, hours of it, till they finally decided that he hadn't known about ezekiel's abilities and he was let go. as he laid there that night, alone for the first time in months, he felt empty. despite having washed it all off hours ago he could still feel their blood, the feeling burned his skin, it reminded him that he hadn't done enough, that he hadn't protected them, that they were being taken away and put god knows where, some place he knew he would most likely never see them again. it reminded him that like always, he couldn't protect the people he loved.

what ezekiel had been through, could only really be described as hell. without so much as even a trial, they had been stitched up, thrown into a cell and left to rot. no one cared that they had never attacked someone unprovoked, even once they had been taken. they barely even fought back against the guards, only looking up at them with bare white eyes when they handed them their food or came in to drag them out to be hosed down in a piss poor excuse of a shower. and when they would step out of line and find themselves being beat again, they would only curl up, hiding their head in their knees as wishing, more than anything, they they could just go back to barry.
they had been in there almost a year when approached with an offer. they could join a team, a team of very bad people, and in return, they could /finally/ have a chance at being free again. of course they had accepted the offer without any hesitation. they had no clue what it was they would truly be doing, but if it meant a chance to get out, they would do anything. that anything, as it turned out, would be worse than any battle they had seen back home, and it came with the looming threat of their head being blown off, thanks to the painful explosive injected into their neck. the mission, had been fucking horrible, for lack of a better description, and by the end of it, ezekiel had been ready to claim their freedom and leave. after all, they were the only one here who had never actually caused any harm to end up in prison, they had simply been deemed "too dangerous and unpredictable to be allowed in the public" but, much to their upset, they were told, they weren't getting out.
this time, they had gotten angry. after they had just risked their life, for the promise of freedom, they were receiving noting. none of them were, until of course the woman with the brightly coloured hair had been 'rescued' by a strange looking man with even brighter coloured hair. still, they were stuck, spending their days wasting away in a cell. it was a day just like any other in this place when the door to their cell had opened. instinctively they shuffled back to the corner and held their hands up, waiting for the usual rush to cuff them that always came with the opening of their door. perhaps another mission? ezekiel didn't want to think about that, not after last time, still, they kept their head down and waited, but when nothing came, they looked up in confusion, only to meet with a man they had never seen before, accompanied by a guard.
"who are you?" they asked, lowering their hands but keeping to their spot of the corner of the room as the man came closer, kneeling down to be at their eye level as he spoke. "i'm the man that just got you your freedom"
barry had been a complete and utter wreck since ezekiel had been taken. he'd tried his best to hold it together, he still went on his nightly patrols, even picked himself up another job to add to his two others, but whenever he was really, finally alone, not able to occupy himself with something, anything to keep his mind off of them, he broke down. he'd just finished his shift at his second job at the diner when he'd come inside and flipped the switch to find, out of all the people in the world that could have been waiting for him, in his second favourite chair, bruce wayne. of course, at first he'd been speechless. what was he supposed to say? he'd just turned on the lights to find a billionaire in his place that technically wasn't actually his place because really he was just squatting but, that wasn't important. why was he here?
he introduced himself with his name, of course, like that somehow explained what he was actually doing here, and when he told barry he knew exactly who he was, just not what he could do, then proceeded to reveal that he himself was batman by nearly stabbing him.. barry still had no idea what was going on. bruce explained to him that he was putting together a team, of people just like him, of course barry had agreed, on one condition. "there's someone else i think could help but, they're.. stuck somewhere. i'll help but, only if you can get them out" he'd agreed, and that was what had lead to where ezekiel was right now.
slowly, they stood, and when the guard made no attempt to restrain them now, they looked back at the man. "why are you helping me?" they asked, humans had shown them such little kindness, they had grown used to only being able to trust barry, and having another human offering them help still made them suspicious. the man sighed quietly and motioned for the guard to leave, waiting till they were alone to speak. "because i promised someone that i'd get you out if they helped me. i'm putting together a special team and i need people like you and your friend to help"
at the mention of their 'friend' they lit up instantly, they almost couldn't believe it. they were going to see barry again. "is he here?" they asked, after being away from him for so long, ezekiel couldn't bare to be away from him for a moment longer. the man, who's name ezekiel still hasn't learned, shook his head, and ezekiel felt their heart sink before he spoke. "he's in the plane, and he seems very eager to see you" ezekiel grinned at that, and as they were finally led out of the absolute hell hole that was this prison, they could barely contain themselves, near sprinting into the plane.
barry has been waiting anxiously, he hadn't stopped pacing since the moment the plane had landed. he hadn't heard anything from ezekiel since they had been taken, this place didn't exactly allow visits like the place his dad was locked away, he hadn't even been able to call them, and not knowing if they were okay, was killing him. he had no clue about what they had been through while they were locked away, the government had been careful to make sure no one knew who exactly had actually defeated those things, though it was probably for the best, because barry would most definitely been straight there if he'd known they were out there risking their life, all for a chance at freedom, just to see him again.
the more time passed, the more his mind began to race. what if they didn't care about him anymore? what if they had completely forgotten about him? it was a stupid thought, deep down barry knew that, but he couldn't shake his nerves. finally, after what felt like an eternity of waiting, quick footsteps came up the stairs of the jet, and barry looked up to see ezekiel for the first time in over a year, and he broke down on the spot. ezekiel rushed forward to wrap their arms around him, and they both fell to the floor, holding onto each other like it was the last thing they'd ever do.
"i'm so sorry" he whispered against them, pressing his face into their neck. he'd dreamed of doing this again for so long, just holding them, feeling them. "i'm so sorry i couldn't get you out sooner- they wouldn't tell me where you were, they wouldn't even let me write to you i-" ezekiel hushed him, lifting his face up to wipe away his tears and kiss him. kissing him again felt like heaven, all they could do was hold him close. for months they had waited for this moment, they'd begin to feel like they'd die before being in his arms again. "it is okay, i promise, i am here now, and i will never, /ever/ leave you again" they spoke softly as barry held them close, and barry knew it was true, because he would never let anyone take them away from him again, no matter what it meant he might have to do.
