Hi!! So it's been a week, and I think the projects scale has gone a little beyond what I can do in a month, so I'm going to be posting a little less / more casually over the next whole. I'm still going to try and finish the map for the the end of the month but the lore stuff might be a little less in-depth.
It begins!! Welcome to Mycelia, my funguary project. This month I'm creating a fictional world and map where the locations and worldbuilding are all based on the Funguary prompts. Basically, MUSHROOM REALM!!
Since the format is different than is typical for the challenge, my posts might look a little weird. I'll be posting updates on the full map once a week, and try for daily close-ups of the landmarks based on the prompts, mayhaps with a little lore. I hope you enjoy my little experiment <3
If you want to see all the previous posts, it's all tagged under #funguary on my page
First day of map work, still trying to figure out how to get good photos of traditional art :/

Funguary Day 7: Wrinkled Peach Mushroom
Tumblr media
[Read my pinned post for an explanation of my Funguary project]
Persyl:
Nestled in Rotwood among the larger and more prominent fungi, Persyl is difficult to find. It's a simple, small town known for the trade of sporeblood: a substance that seems to bleed out of the flesky fungus that houses the town. Sporeblood is a coveted arcane substance appearing to be connected to the fey magic of the islands. Some suggest it has extraordinary curative properties, though others warn that taking it outside of Mycelia may spread the curse afflicting the region elsewhere.
One of my favourite aspects of worldbuilding, especially with map projects like this is putting little vague adventure hooks within settings :D Also doing the wrinkled peach mushroom justice in map icon form is HARD my goodness!!

Funguary Day 6: Inky Cap
Tumblr media
[Read pinned post for an explanation of my Funguary project]
Nightwell River:
The river Nightwell is named for its tinted black colour, contributed by the mushrooms lining its banks. It's more commonly known as the "Drunkard's Demise," as its water is known to have adverse effects on those recently inebriated.
The inky cap sketches aren't my personal favourite this far, I'm hoping that I can improve them in the inking/painting stage of the work, but we will see :) I love the mushrooms themselves so I want to do them justice.

Funguary Day 5: Enoki (sorry it is late!!)
Tumblr media
[Read pinned post for a description of my Funguary project]
Rotwood:
West of the Lurch, Rotwood is the shell of a luscious, forested landscape. Out of the remains of the trees grow stacks of towering mushrooms reaching for the sun. Rotwood is a damp and dim woodland under the thick fungus canopy, concealing the Nightwell River and the town of Persyl.
So I'm a liiittle behind, this was meant to be yesterday but it is HERE NOW!! The forest will also cover more of the island but I. Did not have the time I needed for this one. Rest assured the completed map will include it lol
EDIT: ACCIDENTALLY PUT DAY 4 OOPS

Funguary Day 4: Morel
Tumblr media
[Read my pinned post for an explanation of my Funguary project]
Warning!! This one is pretty long :p
Morel Mountains & Fool's Peak:
Mycelia was not always a bizarre, fungus-covered landscape. The old tale goes that before the change, it was ruled by a dragon for centuries. Until, that is, the dragon happened upon a relic from the fey realm, and they became obsessed with learning the secrets of the fey. From their home in the mountain that once burned, the dragon began negotiating with the accursed thing: trading knowledge in hopes of outsmarting it and the spirits within. It became obvious very quickly that the dragon was underestimating the fey.
It started in the woods east of the mountain. Rot. At an unprecedented speed, trees began collapsing into themselves and in their place grew mushrooms. Reaching towards the sky, they grew up and up in layers until they had become like trees of their own. The dragon, however, did not notice the transformation.
Within the heart of the mountain, the dragon had been working tirelessly to open a portal into the fey realm. They had been promised an honoured place among the fey if they forsook their home for whatever waited inside. However, they were firm in their wish to say a last farewell to the islands before departing.
The dragon climbed out of their lair and to the top of the mountain to announce the news of their discoveries and upon seeing the twisted state of the eastern woods, flew into a fury. Feeling deceived and betrayed, they scorched the lands in hopes of obliterating the faerie fungus, stopping it from spreading further. But mycelium runs deep. Out from the burned ground grew great mushrooms the size of mountains, with a honeycomb of crevices like false caves. As the dragon slept and recovered from their act of wrath, more and more of the world began to experience these strange fungal intrusions.
The people had had enough of their lives being upended, by rot or flames, and decided it was time for the dragon's reign to end. Unsure of how to defeat such a powerful foe, they too sought out fey spirits. The land was now alive with magic and it was not difficult to find a spirit who offered a simple solution. A deadly poison in one of the new additions to the landscape, simply slipped into the dragons waking meal. The only price of this knowledge was a promise to open the portal, presumably for the fey to return home.
The dragon did wake to find a delicious stew, a final meal that was at the very least a treat. It was at the dragons final breath that their home split open by what is not quite a portal, an ever-growing wound in the land leading forever into whatever hell sent this fate to Mycelia.
Oops lore dump haha I guess it had to happen at some point and I didn't know how to split this one up by the days. Also the mountain in the middle is called Fool's Peak which doesn't rlly relate if the prompts, more to the story.
Did you know morels often grow out of burned or disturbed ground? :D

Funguary Day 3: Spotted Cort
Tumblr media
[Read pinned post for an explanation of my Funguary project]
Wyrmfall Bog:
The final resting place of the ancient dragon who used to reign over the land now called Mycelia. A tale of great hubris, indeed. The royal purple of the tree-sized mushrooms outlining the wetland serve as a reminder of the prosperity of the old ruler. The half-sunken skull is a more grim reminder that no riches can save one from their own folley.
This might make a little more sense with tomorrow's post :)

Funguary Day 2: Chicken of the Woods
Tumblr media
[Read pinned post for an explanation of my Funguary project]
The Lurch:
A winding scar across the land of Mycelia, the Lurch is rumoured to lead down to the fey realm. The seemingly endless chasm is populated with layers of vibrant fungus the colour of fresh apricots and with a taste similar to poultry. The Lurch continues under the surface of the water, instead populated strange coral and sea anenomes. Many have tried to descend into the Lurch in the name of discovery. Some even spoke of a "calling." Yet none who have lost sight of the sunlight have ever made a return.
Saw that that chicken of the woods grows on tree wounds, rotting their hosts, and thought scaling that up a little would be fun :)

I apologize for the image quality on this one, I have no absolutely clue how to get good photos of traditional art, especially not close-ups. I suppose it is but another aspect of the challenge this month. Ah, the search for good lighting...
Funguary Day 1: Veiled Lady
Tumblr media
[Read pinned post for an explanation of my Funguary project]
The Veiled City:
Mycelia is an unforgiving realm, even to many of the locals. The Veiled City, a stronghold at the centre of the islands, is a haven for those who wish to be away from the bizarre realities of a realm being slowly taken by the fey. Though it is more the feeling of escape than the reality, as the city itself is housed within a large mushroom.
WOW funguary snuck up on me fast, for day 1 here's the rough pencils of the icon for the Veiled City, and the in-world lore I have thus far. This was such a fun prompt though, wonderful way to start off the month

I've been looking up the prompts for funguary and I'm laughing so hard because I look up Trumpet Of Death expecting to find smth poisonous or along those lines and all the results are like "how to find and eat black trumpet mushrooms", "identifying the dead trumpet mushroom", "how to cook this mushroom that looks very inedible but it is we promise!!"
How. How did we end up with a very edible mushroom known as THE TRUMPET OF DEATH? I love this so much but HOW???

Mushroom realm? Mushroom realm.
I guess my mapping project for February is set
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
February is right around the corner, which means it’s soon time for Funguary 2025! The drawing event where we draw a bunch of mushroom based characters during the month of February.
Rules are super simple, just draw art related to mushrooms! No need to complete all the prompts, just pick and choose from the ones you feel inspired by🍄

NO YOU!! (thank you for the kind reblog fellow nerd)

Hey!! First post from someone who's been lurking on this app for a long time. Have a map I painted for a mini-campaign I ran a while back, set on islands flying high over a sea of eldritch horrors :) Mayhaps there will be more maps to follow...
