Daniel Hart - A Ghost Story (Ep. 48)
LISTEN

DANIEL HART is a performer and composer from Dallas, Texas, who has toured and recorded with bands like St. Vincent, The Polyphonic Spree, Broken Social Scene, Other Lives, and countless others.
In recent years, Hart has been composing music for film and TV. His feature film debut, Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, garnered him critical praise, and Filmmaker Magazine named him one of 2013’s 25 Faces of Independent Film. Hart has scored a dozen feature films over the last four years, including Disney’s Pete’s Dragon and the Natalie Portman-produced documentary Eating Animals. He also composed the music for Showtime's SMILF and Fox’s TV show The Exorcist. In 2017, Daniel Hart composed the original score to A GHOST STORY, released by A24.
David Lowry (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints and Pete’s Dragon) wrote and directed A GHOST STORY, starring Academy Award winner, Casey Affleck, and Academy Award nominee, Rooney Mara. The film is about a recently deceased person who returns to his suburban home, as a ghost, to console his bereft wife, only to find that in his spectral state, he has become unstuck in time and forced to watch passively as the life he knew and the woman he loves slowly slip away.
In this episode, Daniel Hart reveals how a number of key themes came to him by watching early footage of the film repeatedly, how he found himself being recorded playing solo cello for the first time, and how his song, “I Get Overwhelmed” originally written and performed for and by his band Dark Rooms, became a part of A GHOST STORY and how it ended up providing several key elements of the score.

Johan Johannsson

It was reported today that, just yesterday, we lost another great film music composer, JOHAN JOHANNSSON. His film music career had only just begun with memorable scores for films such as: Sicario, The Theory of Everything, and Arrival. Unfortunately, he was replaced on, what was likely to be another memorable effort, Blade Runner 2049. He was only 48. (The same age as me.) While the details of his death haven't been released, it doesn't matter. It is a tragic loss for his family, friends, colleagues, and fans. One of the most common responses, at least for me, at hearing tragic news like this is to dive headlong into the artists work and share about that work with as many as possible. Of course, it would have been better to have done this BEFORE the person has passed, but this is just another part of the tragedy. No one has any idea when such tragedies will strike or to whom, so we carry on as if everyone will be there tomorrow to receive such encouragement or appreciation, should we take them time to give it. I didn't know Johan Johannsson, but I did interview him once.
I was privileged enough to talk with him about his score for THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING (one of my favorites of that year). The quiet and humble nature he exihibits in the interview is being confirmed by many who did know him and are reflecting publicly about the loss today.
In 2016, Johannsson wrote one of the most compelling scores of that year ... to match the high quality of the film itself, ARRIVAL. And following close on it's heals, he released his own project, ORPHEE, which I originally called the perfect companion-piece to Arrival.
While we should be thankful for all of the music we did get from Johannsson (and for those that knew him, the days they did have with him), it's hard not to feel more cheated than grateful ... at least right now.

Olivier Deriviere - Get Even (Ep. 2)

OLIVIER DERIVIERE has been hailed by MTV as “Game music’s eclectic daredevil”, He has won an IFMCA and CUE AWARD for his work on the video game REMEMBER ME and is widely acclaimed for both his composition and innovative approaches to connecting music with the game experience. Among his more recent original scores include video games such as ASSASSIN’S CREED IV: FREEDOM CRY and SUPERNOVA. Derivière often blends traditional musical elements with unorthodox sound techniques in pursuit of creating an authentic score that fully immerses the player in the gameplay and story.
Olivier Deriviere’s most recent project is the video game, GET EVEN - a psychological thriller by Polish video game developers The Farm 51. In the game, players take the role of Cole Black who awakens in an old abandoned asylum, his sole memory is the attempted rescue of a teenage girl with a bomb strapped to her chest, the rest of his memories wiped away. Players will explore an eerie and destitute world on a mission to discover the truth behind his traumatic memory. GET EVEN’s twisted tale will have players questioning their perceptions of reality and the true meaning of justice as they unravel the mystery of how Cole ended up in the asylum and the fate of that teenage girl.
In this episode, composer OLIVIER DERIVIERE while sharing some of the story points of the game, delivers detailed insights from four tracks of his original score to GET EVEN. He discusses some of his key motifs and how the reflection of important emotional beats found in the narrative are expressed within his score. He also talks about some of the technology and techniques employed to blend sound effect into his music.
