Ever wanted to just sit back and “watch” Tumblr? Or maybe you’re tired of having that big black box (your TV) in your living room sitting in the boring position.

Personally, I wanted to watch some of the amazing tumblr blogs that are out there, as well as get a better slideshow for my TV.

So I built Tumblr for Chromecast!

Tumblr for Chromecast allows you to pick any one of your favorite blogs (could even be yours) and watch it as a slideshow on your TV.

All you need is a Chromecast and the Google Cast extension for the Chrome browser.

Tumblr for Chromecast displays photo posts, and certain video posts from whichever tumblr blog you choose, in a continuous slideshow. You can even have it display a random post using shuffle!

I built it as a bit of a fun weekend project to learn how to develop for Chromecast, and because I’ve been wanting a lazier (who doesn’t enjoy being lazy?) way to enjoy Tumblr.

This app will continue to be worked on so feel free to let me know about any ideas you might have, or about any issues (I’m not perfect).

Follow these easy steps to get started:

Open the app in Chrome: Tumblr for Chromecast

Click the “Google Cast Ready” image

Select which Chromecast device you want to cast to

Enter a Blog URL in the input field

That’s it!

OMG....I'm not even going to lie, this is one of the coolest ideas I've come across! I'm definitly checking this out as I'm a HUGE chromecast user!

Do I have to leave whatever device is telling the chromecast to point at tumblr on or can I turn it off?

Right now you have to leave it on. I’m not sure if Google really intended it to be fully run off of the Chromecast device. But I’ll look into it and see what can be done in the future. Thanks for the question!

Are you planing on making anymore apps/programs for chromecast? Are you or will you ever go opensource?

Right now I’m just focused on just this app for Tumblr. But, there are several others I’d like to build at some point, so we’ll see. If you have any suggestions let me know.

As for open sourcing what I’ve built, not right now. I can point you in the direction of what docs and such I got started with if you like.

Hey, thanks for the follow. Could I ask why you followed me, being a blog for Chromecast and all? And also, does the app currently support tumblr or is this just something you're trying to get going? If so, you have my support because I already have and love Chromecast.

So to get started and to build up some interest I went out looking for people that had raved about having a Chromecast. I have one too and love it.

And yes, this app works and you should check it out and share it if you feel so inclined.

Though now that I think of it, it would be cool to be able to display all tagged/whatever posts, instead of just finding a whatever-blog.

I’ll be looking closer at opening up beyond just “whatever-blog”, but for right now this was the most simple solution to start with. Love the suggestion and it’s on the list.

Currently using this to fill my tv screen with a constant stream of Joe Biden photos and gifs. PERFECTION.

The functionality is great and simple. I'd say if you're able to incorporate music and video, it could actually provide a key tool for numerous blogs. People could experience they're favorite blogs on their TV's rather than just on their computers. Those are just my thoughts. Keep up the great work.

Currently the app supports video posts where the video is uploaded straight to Tumblr. I’m working on getting other video posts to work as well, like Youtube and Vimeo.

After that I’ll be working on audio/music posts.
