Cane decoration
[Cane decoration]
In honor of disability pride month, because I have been trying to customize my cane ever since i got it, I wanna talk about ways to customize a cane!
I dont have a wheel chair and I havent yet made any attempts to customize my Walker or anything else, so I dont feel qualified to talk about customizing any other aids, I'll leave that to others who are!
Stickers:
The easiest form of customization is probably slapping a sticker you like on it. Theres a lot of space along the neck/body of the cane so you can add as many or few as you see fit.
Stickers do tend to peel, and when they're laminated with a protective layer, that layer goes first and the art underneath rubs off. But when that part of the cane doesnt come in contact with things often, those stickers are usually safe and will probably last longer that stickers on the back of a laptop.
If you have any recommendations for good/long lasting sticker brands feel free to put them in the notes!
Custom attachments.
Another one that's relatively easy, customizing the wrist strap and attachments you add on.
The only thing you need to worry about is the weight as it might throw off your balance, so small and light items like keychain charms might be best.
I am also working on making wrist strap versions of my pride bracelets, as soon as I can find where I put my supplies I'll have some examples made for my store.
Painting.
This ones a bit more difficult and really depends on the kind if cane you have and what material it's made from.
Wood canes are easiest to paint, you dont have to worry about the joints getting chipped if it's not foldable.
Metal canes need a lot of layers I recommend using a layer of possibly sanding, and gesso, to get paint to better stick.
Some paints wash off really easily so poster and acrylic might not be your best friends even with a later of sealant overtop to protect them.
That said I do paint with a combo of poster and acrylics and use paint sealant lightly sprayed around the cane after each layer of paint. I would look into what paints might last best on the material your cane is made from but with gesso as a base layer I wouldn't worry too too much about the paint coming off especially with sealant.
And if you cant purchase the right paints, whatever you have on hand will be fine, even temporary designs are still fun.
Cane foot.
More of a reminder that these things need to be changed out every now and then because they wear down.
Some people have tennis balls, some buy actual cane feet at the store. Depending on the cane you have you might be able to customize what the foot it a little, and while I dont recommend it because it's the part of the cane with the most contact right before the handle, you could possible paint the foot or add stickers, and with it being changeable you can change the style out every now and then!
I haven't been able to get another replacement for my cane's foot piece. So I'm currently using a cane that's a bit worn out, but whenever I do I will be customizing it.
Theres also things you can install on your cane, for example I have snow shoe spikes installed for winter, which when flipped up when not in use or flipped down for use, can be a defensive weapon to tell people to back off and not touch my cane, its sharp.
If theres anything else anyone would like to add about cane customization feel free to leave it in the notes!

Reposting again (targeted(at myself🥲))
abled bodied people also need to understand that, for physically disabled people resting isn't "free time" that you can use up with assigning us tasks or duties because you're busy. it's an essential part of managing disability and some of us have a hard limit that we're avoiding by having days where we do nothing.
