When or how do you like Thorin and Bilbo to get together the best? Is there a certain spot in the story like after Rivendale? Or is there an action that you prefer to kick off the relationship?

With a well told story, when two people are suited for one another, does it matter? Every iteration has it's charms. Post canon is classic, because the mutual betrayals seem so much more painful if they've already reached a romantic understanding. That's probably my preference for a fluffy fix-it addressing such a tragic ending to their canon adventures.

And yet.

Those betrayals really are so much worse if they are romantically entangled. What if Bilbo kissed Thorin to distract him when the dwarf somehow almost noticed the arkenstone in his possession? What if Bilbo returned to Erebor in the night, guilt ridden, and they made love before Thorin tried to strangle him and throw him to his death?

Whenever works for the story you want to tell. 💖

So I decided to cut the chapter in half after all, which means the chapter count has gone up! It's all the same amount of words, just cut differently. The second half will be posted tomorrow.

Thanks as usual to @capriceandwhimsy for helping me come up with badass-sounding kaiju names. Bruchus is the scientific name for a class of flying beetles, but also sounds nicely ominous and intimidating, I think.

Fun fact for this chapter: I listened to Epic: The Thunder Saga while writing some of this fic, which is why Lao Zhousi, Lao Ying and Lei Ting Zhe all have Zeus-themed names. I'm sure this portends nothing sinister about them at all :)

Reveals for the First Times @mdzsxchange happened, so here is the piece I did for it!

The request suggested 'using at least three of the tags'; 'First kiss' is straightforward enough, the other firsts I had to gently twist into place. The concept in my mind was post-canon travelling, first time seeing the starry sky of that particular journey, and celebrating the anniversary of Wei Wuxian's resurrection.

A proposal

Sometimes, in fandom, we just want to write id-tastic fic that rolls around in tropes that might be viewed as problematic. But we don’t want to address the problematic side of things in this particular fanwork; we just want to roll around and wallow.

It is considered courteous to give readers a heads-up via use of AO3 tags. I propose a tag that signals that a given fanwork is for rolling around, not giving a measured evaluation of anything. The MCU has carved out a space for this sort of fic with the “HYDRA Trash Party” tag, for which I commend them. Trash Party is a bit too specific to cover all of the ground I’m thinking of here, though; I propose “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat.”

For those of you not familiar with Arrested Development, Michael Bluth finds a paper bag in the freezer labeled “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat.” He opens the bag, finds a dead dove, and reacts as follows:

The “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat” tag would essentially be a “what it says on the tin” metatag, indicating “you see the tropes and concepts tagged here? they are going to appear in this fic. exactly as said. there will not necessarily be any subversion, authorial commentary condemning problematic aspects, or meditation on potential harm. this fic contains dead dove. if you proceed, you should expect to encounter it.”

Do you remember the first idea that you had that prompted you to write/draw a fan piece for the first time?

How much did the idea change, if at all, by the time you finished it?

Sorry if this is a double ask, I tried sending it the other day but kept getting error messages from Tumblr.

I really don't. I think for people my age, media saturation was such that fanwork was just a natural extension of play. My middle school diaries are full of gems like "Aladdin And I Steal The Good Lego," "That Time TIE Fighters Blew The Roof Off The Gym During Assembly And I Had To Make A Lightsaber With Luke Skywalker", and "Eowyn, Faramir, and The Cool Gondor Girl Who Runs Errands For Them And Hangs Out."

The first fanworks I posted, however, were because I wanted something that wasn't out there or that there wasn't enough of, and I thought other people might be interested in the same thing. Looking back at AO3, my first posting was a little flash fic hinting at the idea that the main character of Dark Angel could be interested in her (canonical) lesbian roommate. Pretty sure I wrote it, created my AO3 account, and posted it within about an hour out of low level frustration that like five members of the fandom considered that a possibility and everyone was extremely hung up on her (admittedly many) potential male love interests. I also wrote a lot of Kakashi/Guy in the early days, a pairing that still makes so much sense to me but gets very little love in the Naruto fandom.

These days I share my work when it feels complete and if I think other people will enjoy it. Which takes much, much longer, but in the end gives me something better to look back on.

I am doing what must be my 10th reread of A Passion for Mushrooms and I just wanted to say how absolutely incredible that fic is.

The characterisation of Bilbo, the worldbuilding and the wonderful heart of it just give me so much joy.

In most of my ships I really love when they are portrayed as very competent, just in vastly different things. Do you prefer everyone in your ships to be skilled? If yes do you like them skilled in the same thing or like I do where their strengths cover for weaknesses? Or do you like one to be portrayed as not skilled perhaps even helpless?

I do like characters to have different strengths. This probably displays my bias toward adventure shows where Situations require vastly different responses. With a few exceptions, I've never been very interested in procedural or medical dramas where most characters share an occupation and a skill set. When they do, I like them to approach problems in different ways and still have some level of that.

Constable Benton Fraser of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police may be the greatest cop in the history of law enforcement. When it comes to jumping off fire escapes, tracking mud from a shoe, or jumping from a plane onto a vast expanse of sheet ice, he's your guy. He can do everything except connect emotionally with another human being ever.

Compared to him, Stanley Raymond "wears his heart on his sleeve" Kowalski does occasionally look incompetent. If the task is swim underwater for three minutes, he needs Fraser to literally give him air from his own lungs. But having a heart is a strength. Not just compassion or the righteousness to uphold justice for downtrodden people, which Fraser does at every turn. Ray puts his boredom, his grief, his loneliness, and his rage on full display. In turn, people understand and relate to him, connecting in a way that Fraser finds impossible.

So I suppose I do like the occasional Survival story where one person is absolutely useless without the ability to order Chinese food to feed himself and the other is The Best At Wilderness To Ever Go Hiking. But it's important to me that the "helpless" character has other things they bring to the table. They aren't useless, just out of their depth in this particular Situation.

But usually I prefer my blorbos to be complimentary in more direct and equitable ways: the warrior and the burglar, the airbender and the firebender, the ninjitsu genius and the taijitsu master, the best swordsman and the best magic user.

They are never gonna survive all the Horrors without diverse party composition.

I bet Wei Wuxian sends paperman messengers to dozens of people with varying levels of sarcasm. They would carry little hearts and, much like the answer to this ask, arrive whenever he realized he meant to send them. Probably months after the fact.

Since we're breaking the fourth wall, mine would say something like, "I see you're starting another story with me as the star. My heart shall fill with joy when you finish one."
