hey everyone! i know my activity has been a bit spotty, and then completely dropped off for a while. sorry about that! ive started college and everything has been a bit crazy lately haha

i told myself id wait til i felt settled in at college before making any big decisions about this blog, because i have loved this community so much; seriously, there are so many wonderful people ive met through this!! unfortunately, i think i may have burnt myself out with all the writing i did (i wrote over 100k in less than half a year! usually im lucky to get that in over the course of an entire year)

im putting this blog on hiatus for now

as much as i love writing and the people in this community, i need some time to rest and focus on my school. i dont know when ill be back, if ever, but to all of my lovely mutuals and the wonderful friends ive made through this blog: i love you all so much, and your support and kindness has really meant the world to me!

I know my activity on here has been nonexistent for a little while but holy shit. holy fucking shit. they suspended habeas corpus. what the fuck. the ONLY other times in US history that I’m aware of it EVER being suspended was during the Civil War, when the Union wanted to hold suspected spies without risking the spies knowing they were onto them, and in 2006, to allow the indefinite and untried jailing of “enemy combatants.” This is an order that literally has only ever been suspended in the time of war or proxy war.

we have habeas corpus for a reason. It is written directly into the constitution, and it’s often considered one of the most fundamental parts of it. As in, basic human rights fundamental, just a half step behind the classic “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” It was one of the first things I had to memorize about the constitution in class, and it was the one we came back to most often.

The suspension of habeas corpus means anyone can be jailed without being brought before a judge or court. This is jail without trial.

Obviously cops using trumped-up charges to arrest innocent people is nothing new, but this is a whole goddamn order higher than that. No false charges needed, period, because there is no way for the prisoner to prove their innocence.

Time and time again, law enforcement has proven its willingness, and even eagerness, to use its power to harm racial minorities, especially black people. The two of you were childhood friends, so your parents and the Jiang clan had a sort of unspoken agreement that the two of you would likely be together, if you so chose

Basically, everyone expected that you two would fall in love and marry

The two of you saw each other less and less as you grew up and your studies became more intense

But Wei Wuxian always found a way to see you; he’d sneak out of Lotus Cove and into your sect, and take you to hang out

The two of you got into trouble together all the time

Jiang Yanli adored you, and Jiang Cheng tended to be a bit harsh with you, but he was glad you made his brother happy

Both of you were ecstatic when you finally made the betrothal official; you had fallen for each other, hard

You had to postpone the wedding due to the Wen Clan’s attacks, and you were worried about the way he changed after the war. Wei Wuxian pushed you away, and he was terrified of hurting you with his new cultivation technique

You helped him however you could when he and the remaining Wen Clan were rebuilding

After he was resurrected, you recognized him immediately

He was terrified you would be angry with him, or afraid of him, and you were, a little, but you were so glad to have him back

The two of you were finally married, in a small ceremony, in secret

The two of you stood with your backs pressed against the door, gasping for air. You had been running for what felt like forever, but you had finally managed to shake the Black Mask’s thugs. The footsteps in the alley you had left behind faded away, and you were alone. You heaved a sigh.

You stumbled forward, away from the door, and Cass followed.

“What the hell was that?” You sputtered, and Cass made a sound of agreement.

“That guy’s such a creep. He was all, ‘I’m gonna cut you open, but I can’t watch, I’m too squeamish,’” Cass said, mimicking Black Mask’s dramatic flourishes as she spoke, and soon the two of you had dissolved into nervous giggles.

You imitated one of the mercenaries who had nearly cornered the two of you as you laughed. Cass caught on and played along, and soon your sides were burning. Cass doubled over, wiping at her eyes. Eventually, the giggling died down. You and Cass finally glanced around you, realizing you had let yourselves into a kitchen of sorts. You were beneath some sort of fancy restaurant, as far as you could tell. Cass grinned.

“I could eat. How about you?”

You nodded. “After the night we’ve had, we deserve it.”

“Is that a smile I see?” Lucifer asked, and Mazikeen rolled her eyes. Lucifer followed her gaze, finding you across the room, playing the piano.

“Maze!” You called as you finished the song, a score your twin brother had taught you. You waved with a smile, and Mazikeen waved back, her lips curling up again. Lucifer waved, too, and you returned the gesture before bowing to the club’s crowd and then walking over.

“What did you think?” you asked as you put your arm around Maze, pressing a kiss to her cheek. Maze hummed, then turned to kiss you on the lips with a shrug. Lucifer raised an eyebrow. He cleared his throat, but realized the two of you were entirely focused on eachother; he scoffed, then patted you on the back before drifting off to entertain some guests. Mazikeen made a face at him as he left, and he laughed.

“Very mature.”

“Remind me why I agreed to this again?” you muttered as you stared glumly out the window. When Jerome had suggested a little light crime to stave off boredom, you had been ecstatic. You’d been laying low all week, trying to ramp up suspense for the next big attack while also avoiding the police. Apparently, Jerome had decided he had no reason to stay hidden anymore. And you were both paying the price.

Jerome shot you a wide grin, and you moved to flip him off, but while the cuffs around your wrist proved your point, they made the gesture more difficult. Jerome just waggled his eyebrows at you, and you kept staring out the window. You were only a block from the precinct. You winced at the thought of what was coming; you had never been a fan of cells, or of the prison food, or interrogations.

A quiet, barely-audible click to your side pulled you out of your thoughts. As subtly as you could, you turned to look at Jerome, and realized he had uncuffed himself. You held out your hands, and he unchained you, too. You rubbed the sore spots on your wrist, glad to be free.

“Let’s have a little fun, yeah?”

-Make funding grants available to police agencies studying and creating new recruitment, hiring + oversight programs

-allocates $28 million to enforce federal civil rights statutes

-Require the Justice Department to establish a task force to coordinate efforts to investigate and prosecute cases of law enforcement misconduct

There are currently 70 cosponsors of this bill, but none of them are Republicans.
