As someone who’s only been in the RE fandom for about 8 months but grew up in the Metal Gear Solid trenches, I’d like to offer an additional two cents bc I'm starting to see some potential parallels:

When MGS4 came out in 2008 and Old Snake returned to Shadow Moses, it wrecked me. It was surreal and deeply nostalgic, if not downright painful. I still struggle to replay that section today. The place was crumbling and abandoned, loaded with ghosts of the past. The tech was outdated, and Snake himself was becoming obsolete—physically deteriorating, emotionally distant, carrying all the guilt and trauma of his past like a second skin, like a dying relic of a war that no longer needed him.

He even sees the same surveillance camera from MGS1, says the same line (“A surveillance camera!?”) but now it just falls to the floor, useless. No longer a threat like it once was, now just a heap of junk. It’s a perfect metaphor for ageing warriors confronting their own obsolescence.

Walking those halls again felt like stepping into the house you grew up in, only to realise no one lives there anymore, so all you're left with is bittersweet memories and the profound feeling that time flies fast, too fast.

In RE9, there’s potential for something similarly reflective. If Leon is in RE9 like we suspect, and if he returns to Raccoon City, I really hope Capcom leans into that feeling. Not just nostalgia for the sake of it (bc god knows I love nostalgia), but the weight of returning to the place that made you who you are… and finding it hollowed out.

Imagine: Leon returning to the outskirts of Raccoon City—or to the ruins of RCPD itself—looking just as weathered, maybe finding a file on his younger self, maybe the "WELCOME LEON" banner has somehow survived, maybe he utters some half-joking callback line, but this time he just sounds exhausted, broken.

Like Old Snake. Like the surveillance camera.

Like the world has moved on without him.

Leon could be RE’s Old Snake; a man built for a kind of war that doesn’t exist anymore. A leftover. A relic. Just an old soldier with a gun.

Anyway. Capcom if you’re reading this... please ruin me :')
