Have you ever watched the anime Otherside Picnic? It's heavily inspired by Roadside Picnic (obviously) but is a romance about two messed up 20-something lesbians who put their lives at risk so they can sell otherworldly junk to make rent.

One of them had a previous partner who gathered junk with her to sell, but she uh. Didn't make it back, and that loss haunts her current developing relationship with the new girl. New girl is an extremely depressed university student who is unable to comprehend the idea that anyone could ever love her or that her life could have meaning thanks to extensive traumatic backstory.

Very fun series!

i personally don’t hc rom as autistic but i do think he has adhd and anxiety. and tbh i don’t find any part of his canon characterization offensive or insensitive in that context. he’s just a goofy silly lil guy who happens to be very good at fixing things and also has adhd, and i think those things are existent independent of each other. the narrative also never treats him like he’s dumb even if the other characters do. the story never disrespects him, and as a silly lil guy myself, i appreciate that rom is still allowed to be a person with multiple facets to him and not just a one note punch line.

The same is true of leeta. i do hc her as autistic and gnc. she’s allowed to be funny and soft and wear her heart on her sleeve without the narrative ever questioning her strength, intelligence, or practical capability. she is arguably the most stereotypically feminine presenting bjaoran woman we see in trek, and i think that is so wildly uncommon of their culture as to be outside the norms of gender and gender presentation. she does not care! she lives however she wants and refuses to let her joy be stifled by shame. it makes her resilient and it is how she survived the occupation i think.

anyway yes i hc that they’re both neurodivergent and to me it makes their characterizations all the more impactful <3

Hey, genuine question for the Ds9 fandom, do yall think the idea of Rom being autistic is offensive? I love Rom so much but he definitely seems to be a pretty stereotypical depiction of the 'awkward-but-smart' autistic character, especially because he sort of has a speech impediment. I haven't been diagnosed with autism, how ever I am diagnosed with ADHD. I see a lot of my own personal traits in Rom, so I enjoy the idea that he's neurodivergent, but that seems kinda offensive??? I genuinely don't know what to make of all that, so I was curious what other people think.

Sometimes when I’m down, I remember that scene at a convention when Leonard Nimoy and De Kelley are reading fanfiction to the audience, and they pause at a scene to remember the destroyed Enterprise and place their hands over their hearts

and De does a double-take, skips over to Nimoy, and fixes his hand so it’s on his lower ribcage, where the vulcan heart actually is, and then goes back to his spot and remarks something like “I should know I’m his doctor” and continues on.

I love the two camps of Star Trek fanfiction writers where one pretends the secret back zippers don’t exist (as Gene Roddenberry intended) and the others who write detailed scenes of characters zipping and unzipping each other like girls trying on prom dresses.
