I talk to god
as much as I talk to satan
because I wanna hear both sides
does that make me cynical?
there are no miracles
and this is no miraculous life

{ ♟ } ;- Books were something that Marshall had always wanted to read. Sadly though, the boy was illiterate. Complete with the inability to read, spell or even count.
❝I've never read a book before. I've wanted to but... I can't.❞ Not only that but he genuinely couldn't afford them either.
勁 — ❝ I’ve been reading ever since I was a kid. ❞ For a brief second, he allowed a wave of nostalgia to cross his features before slipping his hand under his arm and plucking out his book. A horror novel- The Turn of the Screw- was placed in front of him. Fingers gently tapped the cover and he leaned into his shoulder slightly.
❝ I like reading horrors and mysteries. Sometimes romance novels are nice. ❞

{ ♟ } ;- ❝Kaneki? Ain't heard a name like that before.❞ Sounded like a foreign name to him. Living in the underground, everyone he knew had rather plain names. Sarah, Rudy, Bree just to name a few. It wasn't that a big a deal to Kaneki of course but tiny things like unusual names excited him. Eyes were drawn to the book tucked under his arm though.
❝You read?❞
勁 — ❝ Kaneki. Pleasure to meet you! ❞ Thin fingers wrapped about Marshall’s hand, giving it a brief shake in return. It’s been awhile since he’s had enjoyable company, so it was a nice change in pace. Everyone he seemed to have met up to his point have been… very obnoxious, cynical, or downright mean. There’s a few exceptions, but barely. He was especially glad for the fact that the man wasn’t trying to eat him or cannibalize him. At last, someone not interested in making him into Kaneki soup.
❝ Marshall. That’s a cool name. ❞

{ ♟ } ;- He's polite too? Bonus points. Marshall doesn't know much about manners or anything but he could be polite at the best of times. He took his hand and gave it a firm shake.
❝Marshall. What's yours?❞
勁 — ❝ Of course! ❞ A smile spread to his lips as gradually he closed the book he was reading. Ah, pleasant company, for once!
He offered a hand for a shake, the other sliding his book under his arm.
❝ What’s your name? ❞

{ ♟ } ;- ❝Thanks! No one's complimented my hair before.❞ Marshall liked this guy, he complimented his messy, uncut hair. Doesn't even know his name or anything yet but still, good guy.
勁 — ❝ A-ah, thank you. Nice—uh—um— nice hair. ❞

{ ♟ } ;- Having allies was something he never went out his way to acquire but having Isabel along with the rest of them on his side, certainly would help him out a lot. He wondered if he had to do something in return to earn their full trust. It wasn't an uncommon thing to happen. Do something for them, earn their trust. A payment of some kind.
He looked down at her extended hand, formality. He took his hand in hers and gave a stern shake, one that said 'I trust you'. Words that are not usually spoken around here.
"Nice to meet ya Isabel. Glad to see there's someone that I can trust down here." A smile was offered to her. He was glad that they would be getting along.
"What about the rest of your gang? Take it your sort of acting on their behalf?"
An Encounter of Shadows || coenxm
Facial expression softened and acquired a grave appearance when the man spoke. Isabel knew very well, had lived on her own flesh, what it was like to be a child and female on the Underground. Every single day of living on her own had been hellish, sleeping without knowing if you would wake up the next day. Back then she relied on instinct to go through each day, but now merely remembering how it had been like made her shiver.
Just when she had resigned herself to the inevitability of her own death, someone strong had offered her protection and it was as if life started anew.
She didn’t need to make an effort to imagine how grateful were the people who lived under Marshall’s protection, and how much they probably relied on him to survive.
"Yeah yeah. I told you right? I came here to let you know you can trust us." Not that it had been planned at all, but she had heard Farlan talking about this Upshur guy and decided to check herself what kind of person he was. He had turned out to be much better than expected. And having allies never hurt, even more when they had more important things on their mind than ruling over everyone else down there.
"Nothin’ to gain attacking a place like this right? We’re not that kind of people" Isabel walked toward him once again. Standing next to him, the difference in height and frame was very obvious, but that didn’t stop her from extending her hand out to him with confidence.
"I’m Isabel Magnolia. Glad to see you’re even better than what’s said of you"
