For me it’s putting things in excel sheets, especially when there are graphs to be made at the end! It requires virtually no thought whatsoever and keeps my brain occupied from whatever it is I’m worried about that day. I’m so boring that I keep all my poketwo (discord pokemon bot) purchases in a google sheet just for fun
what is the most insanely boring interest you have. for me it's like. the periodic table. just conceptually. and topographic maps

Hot takes from an unqualified legal studies major whose parents were both teachers at one point:
1. If musicals are literature, then so is opera.
Opera isn’t given a second thought in any of the high school level classes I’ve ever had. No one in my class could even name one besides me in one course I took. And some of them have so much symbolism, etc. like the original thread says about musicals that they need to be more seriously analyzed, and not just from a music theory perspective.
That being said, I don’t actually think either of them are literature, they’re unique mediums, like how YouTube video essays aren’t like podcasts… but if musicals are, then hell yeah, opera is too.
Teach the children the symbolism in the Magic Flute, and scar them all for life with Freemason propaganda. /j
2. If graphic novels are literature then so are manga and comic books.
Same reasons as the first.
3. Why not both?
May come as a shocker, but what if I told you that life isn’t always an either or situation. I think analyzing different forms of media holds great benefit, just like how unpacking a novel is different from unpacking a poem.
4. Like the second thread said, audiobooks are valid.
I was lucky enough to get a copy of the Folger Shakespeare Library’s Julius Caesar recording, and I listened to it instead of reading the script (sorry Mrs. Cooper). And hearing the voices of the actors and their emotion- and they were AMAZING- was so much more impactful to me than just reading words off a page. But I’m also picky when it comes to audiobooks since I have a high reading speed, so I prefer to read nonfiction on actual paper.
5. The Working World Paradox
Not really based on the teacher’s comment but tangentially related
The thing about real life in my experience, and in seeing how the lives of my graduating class have turned out, your desire to learn matters more than your ability to think in exclusively theoretical terms. Most people’s brains literally cannot operate at that level- just look at Piaget’s stages- and would be better off having that time fostered into learning real life skills and personal help strategies. Some people just genuinely aren’t built for college, and that’s not anti intellectual or a bad thing or lesser-than; and I hate it when academia treats it that way. It’s just as valid to be a plumber and it is to be a humanities student. It should be about what makes you satisfied in life. There are lots of people who did horrible in school that go on to be hugely successful in a technical, business, or other field, and that’s great, but what most of them have in common is that they get to the point where they actually want to read and want to learn. It’s fostering the desire and skills necessary to learn more independently that should be the real ultimate goal for teachers.
But that’s just my two cents.

As someone who is trained as an English teacher and a writer herself, here’s why this is a terrible, no good, very bad take that even freakin’ Twitter knows is bad:
Repeat after me: Musicals aren’t literature. Musicals aren’t literature. MUSICALS AREN’T LITERATURE. They are an entirely different medium altogether, one that is hugely musical, so no on the analyzing scripts!!! No DEH, West Side Story, zip. Much less have them replace freakin’ Shakespeare. No. Teach them in theater class, not English.
Repeat after me (reprise): Graphic novels aren’t literature. Graphic novels aren’t literature. GRAPHIC NOVELS AREN’T LITERATURE. They are primarily art, with some elements of dramatic storytelling, and should be treated as such. Teach them in art class, not English.
The purpose of English class is not just to learn about figurative language. They are the important and essential tools for knowing how writing and literature is done and indispensable for a writer. But when we ask students to read a classic, it is NOT because we want you to learn just the figurative language and rhetorical devices and analysis!!! We do it because the classics have good, powerful writing with powerful ideas and insights beyond the usual clichés. We teach the Greek myths because they are major influence of most of Western literature and art and 80% of all artists. Same thing with Shakespeare (only in his case we do it because he is just a damn good writer). You can’t even crack open a book nowadays before getting hit with references to Shakespeare, the Greeks, Austen, Dickens, you name it. It is not because we want you to learn what a goddamn metaphor is—that shit’s easy enough to do with literally any text. But we don’t want to waste your time on bullshit that no one will know or talk about in five years (DEH and Lore Olympus are popular now, but look me in the eye and tell me they will definitely still be considered “good” even a few years from now. Yeah. Didn’t think so.) And then they’ll be stuck in the curriculum for ages and earn the hatred of younger generations for whom they will be old and passé. Thanks, Hermione.
Audiobooks are fine. No, seriously, they are, so long as the students can follow along with the words on the page and so strengthen both literacies. You don’t want a situation in which kids literally can’t read except when they’re listening to audio. That shit defeats the purpose of English class and also doesn’t prepare the kids for a working world in which no one will read aloud to you. Reading irl is done on your own time, with your own two peepers. Audiobooks have been used for Shakespeare plays since my time, and they can be really well done.

Can we PLEASE start putting all pronouns and reader descriptions on fanfic and headcannon posts?
I can't count the amount of times I get halfway through an amazing fic and then its suddenly "the lady" or "beautiful" or something and it's so jarring. Most will simply be labeled "character" x reader. but like, what's the reader written as? Don't make me read it and find out halfway through!
As a gay trans man I need content too! And I'm out here writing it because its so hard to find it. I write all my fics to be completely gender neutral, unless requested otherwise. I use the title "any reader" and I think this is a great wat to do it, simple, doesn't take too long and pretty self explanatory.
So please, if there is a slight mention of femininity/ masculinity in your fic can you note that? because that's triggering tbh, sorry to be that guy but it's true.
I'm not trying to call anyone out or anything, I just think this deserves to be heard about.

I expected to hate shipwrecked and played it to diamond mine, but honestly with the male MC and female LI the banter is just adorable- dorky scientist guy who needs a buff sailor girl to rescue him? Yes! And I loved the male outfits too- very “Gen X dad on vacation” vibes. The art is stunning as well. I’ve really been enjoying it and I’m excited for the next non-VIP chapter to air.

'I know shipwrecked is bad but I kinda like it. I don't consider it a smut book either because nothing has really happened if you don't use diamonds lol'

some hot takes about surrender
i want to make it abundantly clear that my issue with surrender isn’t and never will be that its really just a novel with a plot meant to justify smut, nor is it the fact that it’s a bdsm novel. it’s more so—and i can’t believe i’m saying this—the fact that it had potential to be a fun, stupid book, and they botched it so horribly. i read the first few chapters with an open mind, but i have a ton of issues with it. when fifty shades of grey is less yikes than your bdsm novel, you fucked up. i’m sorry.
additionally, i am not trying to shame players who are enjoying this book so far. eat your hearts out, have fun. you are not the issue here, and this isn’t supposed to make you feel bad. i just have some issues with the way this book is set up.

You know, this might be a crazy idea… but maybe if we all quit diamond mining horrible stories like Surrender and giving them our attention (albeit negative), if we went back and played stories like BOLAS and spent money there and talked about it on socials, then maybe, just MAYBE, PB might think it’s profitable.

Today one of my cishet male friends (who didn’t know I’m trans) bought me a cologne called “The Hulk”, which is a knockoff of Hugo Boss, because, in his own words “you’re the most manly person in our friend group”
I have gender euphoria now 🥰
