When I ask you to go on a walk
I’m asking for me to not feel this way
I see the moon uncovering against the fog
The faintest crescent
My favorite moon phase
The one that catches you by surprise
A quiet homecoming
I want summer dinner nights with electricity in the air
I want to ignore the sadness that wants me to wallow
I want to remember the beauty of catching the last few colors of the sunset
What’s another word for want?
The type of want that expands the fire in your blood?
Don’t let me forget it

A year or two ago, I was reading about Birds of Prey in an East Bay Park pamphlet.
It said to look out for Red-tailed hawks perching on lampposts on freeways.
Ever since then my eyes search for them while I’m driving on any freeway.
I see them soaring above us like magnificent Gods in the sky or resting on the lamp posts I never noticed before.
It’s funny how when you learn something like that your whole self starts to look for that thing subconsciously.
Your being will start to witness moments most people won’t perceive.
I think happiness is like that. You have to train yourself to see it.
You have to catch it in the small fleeting moments even while you’re driving on a concrete gray highway.

I feel sorry for you
You have nothing real to hold onto
On your fifth can of Budweiser you sing “God Bless America” as your liver struggles
Fuck Healthcare
Proud American
You tell us you have the right to die a slow death alone
Secluding yourself in the name of independence
Repeating lies to yourself, so they’re tattooed in blood
You learn to take what you want with force
Proud American
Do you know what giving is?
You don’t see the majesty of the Redwoods
You don’t hear the mockingbirds around you
Fear rings through your ears
You don’t see your neighbors struggling to survive
You see outsiders
Proud American
You worship fear
Praying to your gun every night
Will you ever live in peace?
