Comic Book Club - Book of the week [07/017/17 - 07/23/17]
Uzumaki
Tumblr media
Kurôzu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but by a pattern: uzumaki, the spiral, the hypnotic secret shape of the world. It manifests itself in everything from seashells and whirlpools in water to the spiral marks on people's bodies, the insane obsessions of Shuichi's father and the voice from the cochlea in our inner ear. As the madness spreads, the inhabitants of Kurôzu-cho are pulled ever deeper into a whirlpool from which there is no return!

About Us:
What are we?
Have you ever wanted to read comics but are overwhelmed by the amount of worlds, characters, story lines, crossovers, publishers, etc.? So have we. After countless attempts to start a comic book club locally, we sat down and realized our struggles lied in not having either enough people, or not knowing where to start.
The best solution to our problem was for us to create an organized blog where we can connect with other comic book fans, provide reviews and guides of where to start, and expand our own knowledge of comic book worlds as well.
Our goal is finding community within our shared interests - comics. Join us on the journey of reviews and clubs!
Who are we?
Tumblr media
Super Hero Name: Slamwise Gamgee Alias: Emma Occupation: Special Education Teacher/Library Page Abilities: Lactose intolerance, jamming, cuddling her cat, smashing a whole fifth of whiskey, mismatched socks Partnerships: Scary Allen Team Affiliations: CBGR, Mayhem Base of Operations: Pleasantville
Emma started off as a closet nerd. She hid her love of manga and anime by never sleeping as a preteen while reading web-manga and waiting up for adult swim. At age 25 she lets her geek flag fly with way too many graphic tees. She currently teaches Special Education and shelves books at her local library. As an avid fan of classic geekdom such as DC Comics, Full Metal Alchemist, Zelda, Tolkien, and cheesy K-Dramas, she spends her nights watching way too much TV, reading, and jamming for her local roller derby team. Her favorite comic book hero is Superman for his wholesomeness, but she identifies most with strong badass ladies such as Wonder Woman, Black Canary, Shiek/Zelda, Violet (Rat Queens), and Lois Lane.
Tumblr media
Super Hero Name: Scary Allen Alias: TJ Occupation: Transcriber/Aspiring Artist Abilities: Organization, cleanliness & being hairy Partnerships: Slamwise Team Affiliations: CBGR Base of Operations: Pleasantville
TJ is 24 years old and by day is an independent audio transcriber. By night, he is an aspiring artist and avid comic enthusiast. After years of unhappiness at his job as a hairstylist, he quit his job to follow his dreams of creating comics or selling his art. His favorite comic book character is Barry Allen - The Flash. He identifies with Hal Jordan because his is an irresponsible man-child with big dreams and an alright heart.
Comic Book Club?
Once a week we get together and discuss a comic of the week! We announce what we’ll be reading for the week, every Monday. The following Sunday is when we will gather [edit: in our chat room or YouNow] to discuss the comic itself. All you have to do is make a free account, read the comic, and meet us there! Hope to see you!

Summary: Writer Geoff Johns and artist Gary Frank bring you a startling new look at the beginnings of Lex Luthor, The Legion of Super-Heroes, Lois Lane, Metallo, Jimmy Olsen, The Parasite and more of your favorite characters from the Superman family in this new trade paperback collecting the acclaimed six-issue miniseries!
Review
Em - Writing: *slow clap* It may be that TJ and I are huge fans of Geoff Johns, but man, as a huge Superman fan this may be my favorite traditional re-telling of Clark’s origin story. It retold the same time honored tale, but with modern twists that bring Superman into the 21st century. It also incorporated Superman’s best villain in a mix of old school and modern versions of Lex Luthor’s backstory. Kudos to Johns for creating a story that has a modern feel and sticks to what we all love about Superman.  Art: The art work within this comic is better than some in terms of design. They stuck with an iconic look for most characters. My one negative thought is that when Clark and Lex are young, there are some pretty freaking scary faces. I mean look…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Somehow Superman and Lex Luthor grow into those faces though. Thank Krypton. Character Representation: Little Clark’s feelings and thoughts were so cute. They portrayed Clark Kent/ Kal-El perfectly in both looks and personality. Heck, Johns even through in Lana. Bumbling Clark Kent is my favorite and I immediately flashback to many early Action Comic portrayals. I also loved the small Lois and Clark moments. What can I say? I’m a fangirl here. Johns captured this relationship perfectly. I also can’t get over how spot on they were with Lex Luthor and his greedy need to have possession over everything. A+++
Tumblr media
Final Thoughts: This comic is a great place to start for any first time readers. I may be biased, but Superman’s story is the greatest. This gives you both a comprehensive grasp on the key players backstories, and a look into the iconic superman we all know and love.
TJ - Writing: Geoff Johns did it again. I loved the writing of this, and it was a great intro back into the life of Superman. You can only read and see his origin story so many times before you become desensitized to it, but with this comic, Geoff Johns uses his ability to harness emotions and brought these characters back to life. You really got a feel for his childhood especially - his weird relationship with Lex, how he works with his parents and how they support him, as well as his school life where he seemed to be bullied relentlessly while coming to terms with his powers. I thought what made this origin story especially exciting was the added twist of young Clark taking a trip to the future.  Art: I have a lot of feelings about the art in this. I reaaaaally dug the fact that they clearly used Christopher Reeve as a model for the comic. It made the comic feel classic and comfortable, but still modern. The intent was clear and it was executed well. My only issue with the art (and this tends to be my issue most the time) is that it’s really difficult to get out of adult mode and draw these characters as kids. They just come off looking like small adults which is kind of alarming, but also kind of funny. I really appreciate the hard work that went into this comic though, especially once Clark grew into his face.  Character Representation: I feel like Geoff Johns has such a good grip on what these old characters personalities are while throwing them into modern day. He just makes me feel a lot, which is good because that’s the point! I could fully grasp that Clark is a pure, little cinnamon role as well as Lex being the guy who could have been good if he wasn’t just a tad too greedy. I love Lois and Clark’s relationship and I feel like that could get misrepresented very easily - wasn’t here. Lois is clearly all of us. Kind of beaten up by life, but still has hope that people are good while remaining a tough ass bitch and kind of bitter at times. She’s attracted to Clark because he’s finally the pure cinnamon role she’s been looking for in the world. Lois is all our hardened exteriors, while Clark is our soft, gooey, insides. I ship it. Final Thoughts: This was a perfect spot to start reading Superman. You got everything you needed to know about Clark and his relationships, all while being able to have a good grasp of what the characters should represent. Their personalities and intentions are set in stone with this comic, and if you’ve never read Superman - you should easily be able to move on from here without fear of being completely and totally lost. Hell yeah.

What you might want to know before reading: Character Bio - Hal Jordan
PREVIOUS  or  NEXT
[Note: There will be spoilers in the following post! Please do not proceed if you haven’t read the comic and wish to in the future!]
Summary: The origin and training of Green Lantern Hal Jordan is chronicled in this new hardcover collecting issues #29-35 of the red-hot monthly series! But while Hal is inducted into the Corps, the Green Lantern called Sinestro investigates the death of Hal's predecessor, Abin Sur. Who – or what – could have killed this Lantern? And what does it all have to do with the event called "The Blackest Night"?
Review
Em: Writing: Geoff Johns writing is A+. He creates an easy to follow plot woven with flashbacks that tell different characters’ backstories. Secret Origins is easy to follow and goes into to a lot of detail to explain Green Lantern, the Lantern Corps, and the origin of characters in this world. My only negative is the lack of explanation on the Lanterns’ weakness. Why is yellow the weakness of green? As a new fan, I’m intrigued to read more! I feel like I could possibly jump into any Green Lantern story arc and not be entirely lost now. Art: The comic itself is neatly drawn with a style I enjoy. I really enjoyed the coloring because it was so vivid throughout. I especially liked pages where the background was so dark and the colors of objects or characters pop.   Character Representation: I want to hug and slap Hal Jordan at the same time. He’s that hot guy you love to look at and then he opens his mouth. He’s that asshole you just can’t hate. Hal is sometimes a douche, but you also see all that potential for good in him. His personality is playful, but at the same time contrastingly serious. It’s really what makes Hal Jordan so likable and realistic. Who wants a character without a human side? He has that whole dislike of authority thing down pat; it probably stems from his deep daddy issues. He’s someone dysfunctional youth like me can relate to.
Tumblr media
Final Thoughts: This is my first glimpse into the world of Green Lantern Comics. My only experience with Green Lantern is through animated movies and the wretched Ryan Reynolds one. As a first time reader this comic helped me understand Hal Jordan’s back story, how he got his powers, what his powers were, and his relationship with all the immediate players in his life. Truly this comic starts Hal’s story from the beginning and allows readers to enjoy the character and story without having to be knowledgeable about Green Lantern beforehand. It gives so much necessary information on Green Lantern lore to allow readers to jump into other Green Lantern Comics after reading it.
TJ:
Writing: Geoff Johns is one of my favorite writers of the DCU. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it until I don’t feel it any more. I appreciate the way this origin story was told in a classic Hal Jordan fashion, but with added scenes that give it a slightly new take while adding more feeling while maintaining familiarity. You get just enough pieces from all aspects of the life of Hal Jordan, to feel familiarized enough to go anywhere reading his story arcs after this. It’s a good refresher for many and an even better start for most. What I love about Geoff Johns’ writing is that it effortlessly pulls at your heart strings. Johns seamlessly writes emotions into his work, and the plot had a perfect beginning, middle and end. The comic answers questions that have arisen for years prior while simultaneously begging more with equal veracity while leaving the reader wanting more. Art: Hal Jordan is drawn and portrayed differently in every comic. While some perfectly encompass the feeling of Hal Jordan, other’s leave the reading feeling there might have been a lack of accurate casting. This was not one of those cases! The feel of the art portrayed each characters feel, while the covers enticed the reader with style.  Character Representation: Hal Jordan is represented as being a loose canon, ladies man with a lack of any kind of structure in his life or regards for responsibility and authority. On paper, this sounds like the person that some might avoid - probs not the most pleasant. Yet, his character is incredibly charming and lovable. With just the right amount of seriousness vs. playfulness, the representation of Hal’s character in the comic has a way of leaving the reading feeling like they’re not alone in this vast universe. He’s a little bit of a dick, but a dick with a great heart - so you love him any way.
Tumblr media
Final Thoughts: GL Secret Origin is a great place to start if you wan tot start reading Green Lantern comics, any where at all. You get the origin story of Hal Jordan, along with an introduction to many side characters, main villains, love interests and subplots. It is first time reader friendly, and achieves what it was meant to do - be a great origin story.
