During the seventh century A.D. Ganesh for the first time appeared in the temples of Odisha. The earliest Ganesh image is believed to have been found out in the Parasurameswara temple of Bhubaneswar. Parasurameswara Temple of Bhubaneswar is the best example of the ancient Odia Hindu Temple of the Shailodbhava period in the 7th-8th century BCE. Do You know that even Lord Jagannatha had to take the form of Lord Ganesh to please a devotee? It is said that once a staunch devotee of Lord Ganesh, a profound scholar visited Puri during the annual bathing ceremony,Snana Yatra which is conducted before the world famous Ratha yatra. The King of Puri asked the scholar to accompany him to see Lord Jagannatha, which he refused under the pretext that he wouldn’t worship any “God” other than his Ishtha-devata, Ganesh. Somehow the king persuaded him and he was brought before the Snana vedi. To the utter surprise of all, Lord Jagannatha appeared with an elephantine form that resembled Ganesh. Lord Jagannatha is always known as, "Bhakta ra Bhagaban" which means God of Devotees. So, when a devotee wanted to worship only Lord Ganesh, he changed his form to please him. Since then, during Snana Yatra when the sacred bath is performed, the Deities are dressed like elephants – resembling Ganesh.
