when i say i’m from ukraine, people assume i live somewhere else now. when i say i live in ukraine, they assume i’m somehow immune to war, and there’s a logical division between a ukrainian they chat with on discord and a ukrainian on the news. bitches my yaoi is written from the bomb shelter

I low-key love the fact that sci-fi has so conditioned us to expect to be hanging out with a bunch of cool space aliens, that legitimate, actual scientists keep proposing the most bizarre, three-blunts-into-the-rotation "theories" to explain the fact we're not.
Some of my favourites include:
Zoo Theory: What if there are loads of aliens out there, but they're not talking to us because of the Prime Directive from Star Trek? (Or because they're doing experiments on us???)
Dark Forest Theory: What if there are loads of aliens out there, but they all hate us and each other so they're all just waiting with a shotgun pointed at the door, ready to open fire on anything that moves?
Planetarium Theory: What if there's at least one alien with mastery over light and matter that's just making it seem to us that the universe is empty to us as, like, a joke?
Berserker Theory: What if there were loads of aliens, but one of them made infinite killer robots that murdered everyone and are coming for us next?!!
Like, the universe is at least 13,700,000,000 years old and 46,000,000,000 light years big. We have had the ability to transmit and receive signals for, what, 100 years, and our signals have so far travelled 200 light years?
The fact is biological life almost certainly has, does, or will develop elsewhere in the universe, and it's not impossible that a tiny amount of it has, does, or will develop in a way that we would understand as "intelligent". But, like, we're realistically never going to know because of the scale of the things involved.
So I'm proposing my own hypothesis. I call it the "Fool in a Field" hypothesis. It goes like this:
Humanity is a guy standing in the middle of a field at midnight. It's pitch black, he can't move, and he's been standing there for ages. He's just had the thought to swing his arms. He swings one of his arms, once, and does not hit another person. "Oh no!" He says. "Robots have killed them all!"

This Black History Month, reflect for a moment on the fact that George Washington Carver, famously "the inventor of peanut butter and more than 100 industrial uses for peanuts" wasn't, like, Doc Brown fucking around in his garage because he really liked peanuts but was specifically trying to introduce larger use of a nitrogen fixing legume into crop rotations against cotton monoculture which was destroying yields, livelihoods and the biosphere, and how most agribusiness farming now just destroys that topsoil on purpose and continues to grow a cotton monoculture (or soy or corn or whichever local monoculture is profitable) using petrochemical derived fertilizer, which is one element driving climate change
Daniel Hale Williams performed the first successful heart surgery. He also founded the first nonsegregated hospital in America because he was keenly aware of disparate health outcomes by race which is still a problem today.
WEB Dubois was a part of the delegations for the birth of the UN. His proposal to include in the charter that "the colonial system of government … is undemocratic, socially dangerous and a main cause of wars" was not adapted for the final draft. We might see inaction against colonial violence to this day as part of the failure of others to heed his warnings there.
I feel like so often when we look at Black History Month so much of it is driven by factoids but when taken as history in context its about a direct line from decades and centuries to what is happening right now.

The reason I urged people to vote all last year was not because I liked harris or like democrats or in fact any politician. But if anyone other than trump had gotten in, for that matter even most other right wing pricks, they would not be trying to just eviscerate what little good we have all at once like this, and no trump is not why there's a gaza ceasefire. I mean we now know thousands of bombs were being withheld from netanyahu and trump just handed them all over at once. Of course he did. Why did anyone think he'd be better for anyone anywhere.
If your position was "the only moral thing to advocate is revolution" then wheres your revolution asshole, can you at least do it before people lose their insulin

I see big protests outside the Treasury right now, and federal employees being pressured to resign are holding strong. Stay strong! Know what’s happening, mobilize in your community, and tell your representatives to step the fuck up! Elon and a bunch of young tech bros are doing a lot of scary things to the basic infrastructure of the US right now, and the only way we can get them out is to STAND STRONG! If you’re not in a place to fight! support someone who is!

I saw something in the news today that truly took my breath away. If you have been paying attention to U.S. politics over the past few days, you’ve most likely seen this woman:

This is Bishop Mariann Budde, and on Monday (Trump’s inauguration) she led an interfaith prayer for Trump and the incoming administration. During the service she asked him to have mercy for LGBTQ+ Americans and undocumented immigrants. This was badly received by the Trump administration (as expected).
After seeing headlines about this woman, I read something that I wanted to share. In 1998 a man named Matthew Shepard was murdered for being gay. I’m not going to get into the details of his death on this post, but please be warned it is extremely triggering if you do choose to read more on your own. Matthew Shepard’s death caused a lot of change in the U.S. regarding how LGBTQ hate crimes are handled, and laws that were passed to protect LGBTQ+ people.
Now you’re probably wondering what Matthew Shepard has to do with an Episcopal bishop. For years after Matthew Shepard’s murder, his family had held onto his remains, too scared to lay him to rest in fear of his final resting place being vandalized. In 2018, Budde had his remains interred at the National Cathedral, which is also the place where the interfaith prayer for Trump and his administration took place. The impact of this really had an effect on me. Budde could have led a non confrontational prayer service, and chosen not to mention the harm that will come to the people Trump and his administration are going after. Instead she chose to call out hate and fear in front of some of the most powerful people on the planet, and at a place that has such a large historic meaning to the LGBTQ community.
In the next few years there will be many challenges in protecting free speech, standing up against hate, and protecting those in our communities. But I would like to believe that for every Donald Trump and Elon Musk, there are people like Marianne Budde. There are those of us who can’t speak up for themselves, so it’s important for those of us who can to amplify our voices, even if it’s not the ‘popular’ thing to do.
“And he said you should apologize. Will you apologize?
I am not going to apologize for asking for mercy for others.” - Mariann Budde’s response in a Time interview

If you voted Trump to protest Biden’s policies, this blood is on your hands. He told you what he’d do. We told you what he’d do.

how’s that protest vote working out

Wanted to get my mind off the terrible shit going on right now, checked out Star Trek: Section 31, and uh… the more I think about it, one particular character is the most racist caricature of an Irishman I’ve ever seen? Diversity win, I guess?
Like, he has poor emotional control, is an actual disease (albeit just able to “infect” technology), and is expecting 190,000 children. Also he’s an alien in a robot Vulcan body, there is no reason to have the (South African) actor put on that particular voice.
It’s far from the worst thing going on in the world right now (they shut down the entire NIH until they can get a bunch of bigots installed to run it!), but this really is the worst timeline
#section 31#star trek#nih#worst timeline#michelle yeoh was the best part of Discovery why did you have to put her next to that#nanokin#thanks i hate it

it is so fucking sad to watch tumblr falling into first place through sheer incompetence only to trip over their own feet (start updating the site) at the finish line. you coulda done it, you stupid assholes. we were back in a 'tumblr good' phase, you had actual word of mouth marketing going strong at the time a bunch of other social medias are collapsing. i could have recommended that my job to open a tumblr account during the height of the craze with all the articles about how tumblr is up and coming. i did not and would not because i'm a long time user actively watching the site crash and burn. i am no longer even recommending that my friends join tumblr. i have deleted the app from my phone. i am contemplating deleting a blog i've maintained for over 10 years. i feel actively bad for the friends who did join tumblr before you saw the influx of users, lost your fucking minds, and started tearing the site apart. what a colossal waste

"biblical angels" you do realise there are angels in the old testament that are literally just regular looking guys, right? you do know that the hallucinogenic incoherent descriptions are in like. two books. and the rest of the time angels are just guys. you know that, right?
and I'm not saying don't have fun with weird angels. I'm saying, either the eldritch forms are for special occasions, or the society of the angels is Many-Eyed-Many-Winged-Interlocking-Circles, Four-Faces-Six-Wings, and Mike.

me and áhkku
áhkku means grandma in davvisámegiella. She used to wrap my shoes for me when I was kid, and I feel that things like that are a way of showing love, I remember it well. While I was drawing this she was texting me pictures of the half finished leather bag she's making for me (same type as she's wearing in this drawing) and saying she's having a nice time sewing and thinking of me<3 making things for each other is also love
also this is my childhood gákti and liidni. my cousin wears it now
