Frostmourne FAQ: Blade Lighting

I've received many questions about the inner working of Frostmourne which I co-created with Vertvixen. Many have asked how I made the blade runes light up in such a thin wooden blade. For the record the blade is only 1/2" thick. There are several reasons I made the blade from wood those include rigidity, durability, light weight, easier to finish quickly.

After shaping the blade I cut a 1" x 6" hole in the blade with a jig saw.

Added led rope lighting to the inside edge of the hole. This makes the leds glow inward and helps eliminate hot spots.

I had Vertvixen 3D model a 1" x 6" x 2mm thick inlay plate that had the runes knocked out of it. The inlay fit snugly inside the first 2mm of the previously cut hole on each side. (Thanks to MaCo Creative for the final inlay 3D prints.)

Several applications of filler and sanding to smooth the inlays and make the seam between the 3D prints and wood disappear.

Primer is the final test to check for seamlessness.

Lighting the Yato sword was tricky. There was very little room to house led's, wires and batteries. What I chose to use were prewired micro LED strings that are powered by 2 CR2032 Batteries (which are coin sized). I was able to fit two strings and battery boxes in the sword so I attached the boxes together. It's hard to see in the outdoor photos but the gems in Omega Yato light up. Each gem has four spots where two LEDs fire from the side. That's eight LED's per gem. I placed the LED's specifically so the hotspot of the led would be caught by the facets in the gems. Hard to really see how cool the effect is in photos. Bottom photo is in normal indoor lighting.
