Notes on Torturing The Character In The Science Facility

my takes on this trope rarely if ever have anything to do with the character being "special" or being studied for powers they innately have, if they are special its something that was done to them

it's about the medical trauma

it's about the violation and lack of bodily autonomy

the "living weapon" trope, but the key characteristic is catastrophic functionality

i love, love, love the concept of "catastrophic functionality" in a person: character that can tank ludicrous amounts of damage and just Keep Going in virtually all circumstances barring outright dismemberment. They can keep going, so do they "deserve" rest and/or pain relief?

after a lifetime of having their distress treated as whiny and unreasonable, they have what would be a dangerously high tolerance to pain and exhaustion.

another key function of the Science Facility is to fix the damage Character takes, maybe using enhanced healing technologies or 3D printed organs or something. this leads to Character's body being treated as relatively disposable cause "we can just fix them"

extreme version of this: Character can't die even if they wanted to

people who work with Character are informed that they're dangerous and arbitrarily violent, and their fear of Character makes it easier to justify restricting autonomy

It is TRUE, cause Character does not have tools to set boundaries or protect their body other than violence. vicious cycle of being perceived as dangerous and therefore denied autonomy, and being forced to use violence to defend autonomy

the restraints used to hold Character look like major overkill, which underscores how dangerous they are. LOVE this trope

character being desexualized to the point that their non-consent to touch, to being stripped down and examined, or to procedures is trivialized. There is no non-clinical context for their body, and the "clinical" framework eclipses any possibility for bodily violation to be understood as violent.

types of uncanniness: Character looks human but has some subtle inhuman traits or characteristics. (I'm obsessed with reflective eye shine, personally.) OR Character looks like they've been taken apart and put back together, like flesh pulled over a much more unforgiving and indestructible metal scaffold. OR Character gives off "undead" vibes; they're just not quite alive in a way that sets off air raid sirens in people's brains

Often, Character is dead and Came Back Wrong (varying levels of literalness)

Okay I JUST realized I never posted these on here—- BUT BASICALLY, about a year and a half ago I started doing these experimental black hairstyle posts that were threads long on Twitter, to give artists a source of inspo for their black ocs whose hair they wanted to try something new with! There’s more to black hair than just the selected styles portrayed in media, and I thought it would be fun to show people how much texture, shape, fades, length, and style can be combined when drawing black hair—-cause it’s a kind of manipulation our hair can do irl! hair care... brushing each other's hair? braiding each other's hair? taking care of each other <3 soft intimacy. even if they're arguing the whole time.

the sensitive tacet mark bit but like... nonsexually. jiyan being unused to being a resonator and reduced to a puddle, face buried in geshu lin's shoulder while he lays, boneless, against his general's chest. geshu lin letting him return the favor and feel along his tacet mark, unable to meet jiyan's eyes out of embarrassment from being so vulnerable.

...hear me out: neck kisses. jiyan liking to kiss the edges of geshu lin's tacet mark, and geshu lin liking to kiss the back of jiyan's neck so he can use his body to hide jiyan's tacet mark from view.

possessive geshu lin. i dont. idk man. he seems like he'd be the possessive type. i think it would be fun to write.

okay tbh this is more like me talking about how i see them because i need to figure out how their dynamic works in my brain so i can write for them properly BUT

oh geshuyan, you might not be able to fix each other, but you sure could make each other worse and then kiss angrily about it <3

☆ their relationship starts ,, oddly. jiyan respects his general, if finds him a little odd, but geshu lin finds jiyan fascinating, and loves how he can almost read jiyan, just almost - he's a puzzle, and geshu lin loves a challenge. jiyan is... not very fond of how the general looks at him like he's a prize of some sort, but it is nice to have someone who can challenge how he thinks, and make him use his brain.

☆ geshu lin realized he was in love with jiyan, when jiyan beat him in a spar for the first time. he was pinned in place, jiyan's broadblade dangerously close to his throat, uncannily well lined up with the tacet mark across his neck, and after a moment of unwavering eye contact, geshu lin smiled, and told him that he finally did it. jiyan's answering smile was so brilliant, so warm, that geshu lin wondered how jiyan was human at all. (he hated it. he hated it so much. but he also wouldn't undo any of it, even if he was given the chance to.)

☆ jiyan knew he had confusing, complicated emotions about geshu lin that weren't quite platonic for a long time. but it didn't occur to him that it was love until it was too late. he felt the change in the wind, the shift in the streams, and turned his head in time to see the ball of flames that was geshu lin launch at ovathrax, and he knew. and in that moment, he knew. and he regretted everything.

☆ they wouldn't have dated even if they did talk about it, i dont think. rank difficulties, but they didn't want to separate from each other, the possible risks of that kind of commitment during a war... nah. not worth it. so, instead, they just... had what they had, and didn't ask for more. not. not. in terms of. labels. that is. they gave each other everything they physically could (and more. coughs.) when they were alone.

☆ once jiyan's resonator awakening occurred and he got a better hold on things, during one of their spars, they briefly, accidentally, created a fire tornado. clash of fortes wrangled back under control and peace restored, they were both so shocked by what had just happened that they stood there in silence, staring at each other.

the silence was broken by geshu lin laughing in disbelief, and jiyan immediately yelled at him about potential structural damage and if he knew that could happen or not (geshu lin did not, in fact, know that could happen, but he was delighted that it could).

☆ jiyan's awakening took a heavy toll on him, and geshu lin was the one to sweep him up under his metaphorical wing and teach him how to control his forte. that's how jiyan really started leaning more into tactics and combat, after baiweng's death. it was easier if he shifted gears so he could keep learning under geshu lin, and it would benefit him more, so he did it.

☆ the only people allowed to touch anywhere near geshu lin's tacet mark are medics, and jiyan. the fact jiyan is an outlier is not related to his service as a medic.

geshu lin is a very cautious, closed off person. he doesn't like being vulnerable emotionally, but being vulnerable physically is worse. the fact that his tacet mark is across his throat made him very, very wary of any and all contact on his neck. but jiyan... he can make an exception for the man who looks at him like he's a person, instead of a weapon.

thinking about how i see geshuyan... and how i see them... and how their relationship would have developed...

medic jiyan not knowing how to fight, but he's smart. he's clever, he has unique insight, he might not be trained to be strategic, but he's analytical, years of helping his mother in the clinic training him to pick apart complex problems and find the most optional solution.

general geshu lin seeing this medic, hearing from baiweng how smart he is, finally meeting him for himself, and seeing that brilliant mind in action, and he... doesn't want to fight? he has no interest on helping on the battlefield? absurd!

he's not losing this medic, no matter what happens, so he pulls rank on the unwilling medic - he will learn to defend himself.

as it turns out, jiyan is an excellent student, too. he makes no secret of how much he dreads geshu lin's "lessons" (spars, where geshu lin forces him to learn by experience, not letting him stop or take a break until he decides he's satisfied with jiyan's progress or how long they've been working), but he also goes along with it anyway, becoming an adept, clever, powerful broadblade wielder.

training against geshu lin pushes one to their limits. jiyan becomes fast, powerful, agile but steady, able to dodge around incoming attacks, or counterattack without missing a beat, eventually becoming stronger and stronger until, finally, one day, he defeats geshu lin.

unbeknownst to him, now a full blown resonator, following his general as he learns to fight on the field, working on harnessing his forte, jiyan's fate has been sealed by the wild, gleeful grin on geshu lin's face, as he says the words "you finally did it."

later that day, geshu lin makes sure to fill out the proper paperwork and and forms to ensure that, when he dies (because it is a when, it is, he'll die one day on the field, he knows it,) jiyan will be the one to take his place.

he's strong enough, now. the inexperienced but clever, perceptive, medic jiyan, is now an analytical, thoughtful, force-of-nature field medic that, one day, will take geshu lin's place, and lead the midnight rangers to what, hopefully, will be a better future.

(and he does, of course. he has a heart bigger than geshu lin thinks he's ever had.)

jiyan thought - no, he thinks, he still does, - that geshu lin is an idiot. he hates how the old general's brain works, his selfishness, his selflessness, his contradictory nature and reckless behavior, how brutal he is and how careless he is with the lives of those around him. he honors the dead, but does so little to prevent his plans from making more. jiyan doesn't understand that.

but beyond that, under that cold, distant exterior, is a tired, fretful man who just wants the world to stop suffering. he wants the tacet discords to be wiped out so humanity can have peace. he's like jiyan, in that regard. he wants the pain, the war, the death, to all stop. he wants the world to be free of it all. and that... that, jiyan can understand.

geshu lin has walls up that rival a fortress, but jiyan knows what lies behind those walls. and that's why only he is allowed to walk through the door, and see for himself what is hidden behind all those protective measures.

he hates how much he loves it.

he hates how that love is why he let geshu lin go.

fun little thought I don't think I'll be writing too soon: brant and aalto meeting because aalto has gotta know who this captain troupe master guy that saved his buddy's life is when his boat got wrecked is, only to immediately hit it off with him

i really wanted to explore how a stressful awakening might've affected someone, especially if it was due to emotional distress, and i had the very fun idea of. heyyy. what if jiyan's awakening was because tacet discords made it into the camp and he freaked the fuck out because there weren't enough people around to guarantee the wounded's safety? since geshu lin is the type (as far as we know) to just. take everyone and GO?

uhhnm. that and an extra dose of angst for funsies and i am at 2.7k words and still rolling. anyway! have two teasers regarding jiyan's awakening specifically because im like. rolling around on the ground thinking about this oh my gooddddd i love him
