i think we should remind musicians they can absolutely make up little stories for their songs btw. it doesn’t have to be about them at all. you can invent a guy and put him in situations to music. time honoured tradition in fact.

I feel bad for people in bands who have falling outs bc imagine that one horrific coworker you have and then you quit the job and you’re so relieved to never have to work with them again. But then imagine that for the rest of your life the public never stops haranguing you to get back with that coworker and do one last report/audit/case/equivalent whatever just for old times sake. And you’re like wtf no I hate that guy. Want to check out my cool new job though? And everyone’s like no please make amends with that guy you hate from your old job. And it never lets up until one of you dies

Ok right, I cannot sing. Statement of fact, I can’t.
But get a few pints in me and there’s reason for an Irish trad song?
Had an entire pub during a lock-in silent as I sang The Green Fields of France (the owner even told two lads to shut up when they started chatting).
Struck up Whiskey in the Jar at a Brazilian’s birthday party while I was rolling a joint, coz their internet connection & music had stopped working. Was about halfway through when I realised the whole party was dead quiet listening to me.
Used to do introductory walking tours of Dublin for new foreign students. Tour ended at the Molly Malone statue. I’d end the tour with the first verse of Molly Malone. Always ended up with groups of tourists listening to me, a couple times buskers struck up a tune to accompany me.
So yeah…I cannot sing. But all you need for Irish Trad music is a thick Irish accent and bucketloads of energy.

every traditional irish song is in the key of d and called something like "i kicked my pal paddy murphy so hard he died but i could've sworn i saw his ghost dancing a jig at his wake" and then every single trad player you've ever met knows like three separate variations on it on four different instruments.

Scottish trad has me ranting and raving about songs titled things like "check out that hole of potatoes" and "cunty old man"

Battle Hymn of the Republic should’ve been the U.S. National Anthem. I’d say I’d die on this hill, but oh, who exactly was it that won the war? The Union? Yeah, sounds like I’m very much alive on this hill, unlike the Confederacy. This hill is Union soil, baby, glory glory hallelujah.

I thought that I might’ve been an east german commie in a past life because while I was listening to an auto-generated playlist a song comes on that I swear I’ve never heard before and yet the melody resonates within my very blood and bones so I just accept that this is just a thinness in our temporal plane or whatever and that solange lorelei singt wird deutschland sein before I realize that the melody is the same as “god save ireland” which I have definitely heard before and would make a lot more sense for me to know
