fun fact: you know how in the nacho scene ambrosius refers to nimona exclusively as 'she' and 'your... sidekick'? that's because no one has ever uttered her name in his presence. this continues until the end of the movie, meaning that in whatever post-battle conversation they have, there's some point where ballister has to tell ambrosius the name of the person he's grieving.

nimona 100% plays really annoying songs such a crazy frog, gummy bear, hamster dance, at like 110% volume just to piss off ambrosius and it works 100% of the time, but ballister is just used to it by now and finds himself singing along to them

Also Nimona liking fish/marine life things because of Ballister makes me think that later, when she’s a toddler, she keeps asking him for cat toys/cat bowls because so many of them are fish themed (since cats like fish) and Ballister keeps explaining to her, exasperated, that no they can’t buy the fish-shaped dish. Or the little sardine catnip toys. Those are for cats, not people.

(totally not inspired by kid me being more fascinated with pet toys. No, never 😂)

Also you know once she’s old/responsible enough she asks for a some pet fish. Maybe she keeps a freshwater tank with something like a betta, paired with neon tetras, some mystery snails, an african dwarf frog, or even some shrimp.

So, since posting my alternate gay dads AU, the concept has really sunk its hooks into my brain. It really feels like one of those ideas where it keeps getting better the more I think about it. And I keep coming up with lil' scenarios. (Which admittedly are less “human baby scenarios” and more “the world’s most difficult puppy/kitten” scenarios since I have more experience with baby animals than I do human babies 😅 Like, Nims still is absolutely a person with complex emotions, just to clarify. But I also like interpretations where she is more animalistic at times. Especially with her equivalent of an infant.)

Either way, more thoughts:

Maybe Baby Nims doesn’t know how to shift at first, or simply chooses not to, and Bal’s fretting because he’s literally never seen her stay in one form for so long. So, just like a worried dad, he’s showing her photos and footage of her shapeshifting to try and get the message across that it’s something she can do.

The moment she does shift, though? It’s completely out of annoyance. She’s very tiny, and very sneaky. So Bal’s had to put a little bell on her (yes kind of like a kitten) so he can keep track on when she’s on the move or if she’s under furniture (which, especially because she likes to stalk him like prey, is also for his safety just as much as it is hers.) And she, reasonably, hates it. So, she’s been wrestling with the collar for a while, not quite having the force to activate the breakaway feature, before something finally just kind of clicks and she shifts into the little puff of smoke/magic. She reshapes into the forms she's been staying in… and she’s free.~

Now absolutely nothing can contain her. Not baby gates, not doors, not even Ballister’s arms. If she wants to go somewhere, she’s going. If she doesn’t wanna go, then she doesn’t. And you better not try to stop her. You ever try to stop a meltdown when your kid just learned she can breathe fire?! Yeah, no, not pleasant.

What’s worse is that Bal’s got all this personal grief wrapped up in this situation. He took her in because Nimona was his friend. And now it’s like she’s gone. This isn’t the Nims he knew. Maybe she’ll remember what happened “in her past life”, or maybe the Nimona he knew died along with the Director and this shapeshifter he’s taking care of is a completely different person. Maybe it’s wrong for him to put all these hopes and expectations on this little creature, this teeny little guy whose only thoughts consist of “I’m hungry, I’m sleepy, I wanna chase.”

In some ways, though, he still treats this little being like the Nimona he knew. She was fine on the couch, so he lets the baby stay there. Nimona liked pizza and tacos, so that’s what he makes. Nimona wasn’t all that touch-y for the time he knew her. So, he gives new-Nims space. At most giving her a little pat on top of her head.

(Keep in mind he’s basically like a fresh college graduate. So like early 20s at least. This man has no child rearing instincts or knowledge other than the absolute basics.)

I’m liking the idea of Bal trying to do this on his own, thinking it wouldn’t be so hard… yeah, it’s been a week, maybe a week and a half. He’s still healing from everything that happened. Except now he’s also sleep deprived, hasn’t had a chance to shower in days (whenever he turns his back something breaks,) covered head-to-toe in bites and scratches (because ofc she figured out how to give herself teeth and claws) and, just to top it off, he can barely eat because his food’s cold by the time Nimona’s finished. When she’s done eating (which already isn’t a lot?) Yeah, she’s right back to running around the place like a little maniac. And all of this is while trying to make their lair hideout home a nicer place to live. He’s basically walking in a bit of a fog at this point.

Bal’s so frazzled, he can’t help but call up the one guy he could possibly depend on. And Ambrosius can hear just how worn down Ballister is. Like, not even their training was able to tire him out this much.

“I need to have a warm meal, I need a shower, and I need to sleep. Ambrosius, please…”

And Ambs doesn’t hesitate. Sure, they had an argument before Bal took off like a protective papa bear, but that doesn’t mean he loves Bal any less. And after everything that’s happened, a day’s worth of babysitting seems like a good start to try and make up for it all. If he even can.

Though, because Ambs isn’t in an exhausted semi-permanent “frazzled” state, he notices things Bal doesn’t. She’s not trying to be difficult, she’s just trying to meet her own needs.

— For example, how Nims wants to be up high. So far, Ballister’s been trying to keep her away from high furniture in case she falls (reasonable if she was a people-baby. But she’s not a people.) But, whenever she’s tucked in places like the top of the fridge, she’s less antsy and overwhelmed.

— When she’s pawing and scratching at things like the rug or the couch, she’s trying to nest. So he gets her a little wooden crate or cardboard box with blankets for her to dip into when she’s cold/nervous.

— He notices that, in general, she’s bored. And that’s why she keeps pouncing and stalking Ballister’s hands and ankles. She’s trying to play. So, Ambs plays with her. (Yes a laser pointer does get involved at some point.)

— The foods Bal’s been trying to give her are just too spicy/flavorful. She needs simple foods. Fresh fruit, vegetable chunks, bits of mostly plain chicken, beef, or fish. That sort of thing. Ambs isn’t the best cook, nearly burns what he makes for her, but she finally eats everything that’s been given to her.

— And later, at bedtime, he just hangs out on the couch with her, letting her snuggle under his chin while they watch tv together. She’s actually a pretty big cuddlebug!

So, when Ballister’s back in action (which takes way more than a day, man's exhausted,) he’s just… baffled. Because how. For him it’s been nothing but chaos and frustration, and now the lair is basically silent except for, like, Ambrosius muttering something. He goes to check on them and Ambs is like showing her a game on his phone, she's on his shoulder, and she's actually engaging with it pretty well despite having lil paw-like feets.

(And of course Bal's just a teensy bit salty about her suddenly behaving, but maybe that's the exhaustion talking)

But Ambs kinda sorta drops the idea of him staying with Bal, giving him more time to heal, lending a helping hand, making up for not believing Bal about being framed, etc. And, hey, Nims seems to like him! Which, Ballister has to hesitantly agree to. Because, even though things are awkward between him and Abms right now, he knows he can't do this alone.

But yeah. This is most of what I've got so far. I've got other little snippets (like using flash cards to teach Nims animal words, and she shifts into them. Nims trying to be "helpful" by catching a bird or a lizard. Or her first word maybe being "boss.")

... Should I just write a fic at this point? I think I basically did with how long this post is. I'd have no clue where it'd go, and as an outliner that kinda scares me, but idk.

Concept for a different take on the Gay Dads AU (movie version)

Here’s the pitch:

•

The movie progresses just as-is. Ballister’s framed, he meets Nimona, they work together, yadda-yadda blah-blah-blah.

It’s the climax of the movie. Nimona turns into a bright, fiery phoenix, and sacrifices herself for the sake of the kingdom. All of it progresses as normal. Smoke, little sparkles, so on and so forth.

However,

In that moment where Ambrosius is holding Ballister, looking out at the wide world beyond the wall, he looks down… and notices in the impact crater, what looks like some small, pink, glowing creature. A baby shapeshifter.

In most interpretations of Phoenixes I’ve seen, they don’t just die and respawn. Their life cycle starts over again. And I see this concept being fun in a lot of different ways:

- First of all, a wide variety of takes on what a baby shapeshifter would even look like. Lil ball of glowy magic? The adorable pink axolotl-thing from the concept art? A human baby? Who knows!

- Ballister and Ambrosius figuring out how they’ll fix their fractured relationship in a post-wall world while taking care of a creature literally no one else knows about. Would Ballister want Ambrosius there immediately after the incident? Would he still be mad and try to take care of Nimona on his own before finally relenting? Who knows!

- A mix of typical parenting shenanigans mixed with the chaos of a shapeshifter. Like imagine trying to put your kid down for a nap when she’s turned into a bird and won’t stop flying around the frickin’ house. Or having a kid who doesn’t realize their own strength but can turn into a rhino. Or who can change into your boyfriend so she can steal cookies from the pantry.

- And in that same vein, Ballister and Ambrosius realizing that they can’t even take a typical human parenting approach because their kid also wants to scratch like a kitten, chew on things like a wolf pup, sometimes bolts around their apartment as a fawn, etc.

- Ballister coping with the fact that he technically still has his friend… except she’s an infant. One who can’t speak and doesn’t seem to entirely remember him. So there’s angst potential there (with maybe some slight hope as she slowly regains memories..?)

Boba Time

Saw this post, by @heythinkyface a while back and was ✨~inspired~✨so take this goofy thing... Except it somehow took me a week.

Will I ever get the hang of more cartoon-y/chibi things? Or comics? Who tf knows.

Also, what I imagine their Boba drinks of choice are:

Ballister: Keeps it simple. Just a chai milk tea with tapioca for him, please.

Ambrosius: Usually goes for mango green tea with tapioca OR matcha with mango jellies.

Nimona: Changes on a daily basis. Usually goes for LOTS of strong fruity flavors and will mix-and-match pearl/jelly flavors like crazy. Tends to like "red/pink fruits" out of principle.

I think Ambrosius has always loved Ballister (but he realized it was romantically too, years later)

Also, Ballister realized that he liked Ambrosius more than a friend at some point in their teenage years and knew right away that it was a very bad thing, for a bunch of reasons.

(Wasn't necessarily made with Goldenheart Week in mind because the last themed week I did I kinda burnt myself out after. But, it took me so long to finish this, June kiiiinda soooorta came around already so I'm throwing this hat in the ring in honor of it, lol)

Look, blame Red Dead 2 for kickstarting my love for men in suspenders. I am weak for it, alright? Same with vests, now. And when fricking Naatu Naatu popped up while my music was shuffled I just... I had to do it. Plus, you know Bal and Ambs dance with each other. We've all seen the damn movie, Bal's got moves!

(I imagine this takes place way, way post-movie and Bal would've upgraded his arm past the "using whatever scrap I can find" arm we see him make... totally not an excuse because I can't draw his arm, whaaat? What're you talking about??)
