GaymerX 2013
GaymerX / GX
August 3-4, 2013
Kabuki Hotel, Japantown San Francisco, CA
 Overall Con Experience
I had a lot of fun at this LGBTQ gaymer convention! The atmosphere and the people are wonderful, fun, and friendly. You do not feel unsafe, and everyone is very welcoming. A few of the panels I went to were a lot of fun and very inclusive for everyone. Cosplay was a blast. Artists were so wonderful. I have nothing but good things to say about this convention it just blew me away. I highly encourage everyone to check out this convention next year, give it a shot, talk and meet new people. It's really worth it.
Registration/ Badges
Pre-registration and at the door registration is provided.
The earlier you pre-register the cheaper the price of the badge is.
I found out about the convention about 2 months before the convention date and was able to pre-register for $45 for the entire weekend. At door price was $60 but if you brought in one of their flyers you could get $5 off door price.
As we were around con on the last day standing in line for a panel Staff approached everyone reaching out and letting them know that they could pre-register at con on the last day for a special rate. I wasn't able to check out this portion myself because I'm in the military and not sure if I will be able to make it for next year. If I could I would have pre-registered though! I'm not sure when the new rates will be up for next year please check the website or contact GaymerX at http://gaymerconnect.com/info/contact for more details about prices and badges.

Concert
Where I thought it was super cool that they had a mixture of artists and all very video game related I would have liked a more dance theme. I felt the music was very social, and what I mean by that is that it seemed very similar to background music or almost elevator music. Even though I really enjoyed the bands I was looking forward to getting my dance on... and well dancing to Mario's theme is a bit odd. Also the concert only lasted until midnight where as at most other conventions they last until 2 am so this is something I would like to see changed as well. The concert was a nice change though for most, they had an open bar for everyone 21+ and it was a great place to just walk around talk or dance with other attendees.
Cosplay
All cosplay is welcome and encouraged at this convention! I was unable to attend the masquerade, but it was held on Sunday at 10 am which I encourage next year to be held at a later time.
Yay or Nay for 2014

Fanime 2013 Review by Mr. Ryoko Yuuki
Tumblr media
What can I say about this year? Unorganized. I've been a faithful Fanime goer since 2004, if this was anyone's first year I would not be surprised if they did not want to come back. Staff had no idea what was going on.
Every year my friends and I get to the convention between 2am and 4am so that we can sit somewhere close to the front of the line so that we can get in small naps before the con. Well our bad for not reading the page and noticing registration was going to be in the Fairmont this year. Our bad. When we arrived at the Fairmont the guard told us we could start lining up at 5am, so we come back after wondering around streets of San Jose and he gives us a hard time about lining up but eventually lets us inside. So no big deal. What made the whole experience a bit displeasing was that after waiting until about 8 and being asked several times what time we had arrived there (because there were apparently 2 other lines elsewhere--not in front of the pre-registration doors? Like we were...) so after about an hour of staff figuring stuff out they let us in. Registration was supposed to start at 8, we got in around 9:15. At this point tired and cranky, we can hear staff talking about being understaffed this year. I feel bad, but guys... you have at least 11 months out of a year to get this stuff situated.... come on. So after that the weekend pretty much went smoothly.
I had lost my badge at some point during the rave, but met up with my friend Dani who was a rover, if it weren't for her I wouldn't have been so easygoing about the situation since she physically walked the rave with me to look for my badge (thank you so much Dani!) I had my badge returned to me the next day also they send you emails and call you when they get in your lost badge, so that was totally cool!
The other thing that was massacred was the Cosplay Spectacular/ Masquerade. Emcee was terrible, lighting and audio fail. I was apart of the skits this year and was very let down that I had very specific direction I wanted for our lights... I had directed the staff to make sure they knew our skit name and group name. I had an introduction written and submitted weeks before con had started. None of this was used. Our skit name became a generic "Alice in Wondeland", our group never introduced, and our introduction never read. Our skit was successful and fun, but none of the lighting happened for our skit that was needed to emphasize the dramatic scenes. I was extremely disappointed how they cut off audio or it was jumbled or how only certain skits received very little lighting effects. Our Emcee was also terrible, I felt bad for the guy... it felt like they just threw him up there with no prep time very disappointed with Fanime skits this year.
Overall, after all the stress... I had a great time cosplaying, hanging out with friends new and old, and I hope to attend Fanime 14 with a little more pride next year. Good luck Fanime, lets celebrate 10 years with a bang!
