#this #people seem to think of things like push ups and pull ups as these kind of measures of over all fitness
#when in actuality if you haven't been training those specific movements #you're likely not going to be able to do them/many of them #while being perfectly fit and strong for what you do do
#also I'm convinced that most americans outside of physical labor jobs have no idea of what actual functional muscle looks like compared #to hypertrophy developed on purpose in the gym
#nor really realize that the shredded look of actors on shooting day and body builders on competition day and fighters on weigh in day
#is not actually functionally capable of being maintained long term #and in fact feels pretty shitty because they've cut both body fat and hydration levels to the minimum
it's kinda funny having manual labor type strength because I can lift excessively heavy shit and squat constantly with zero issue but no I cannot do multiple push ups

"Guy" and "man" have different connotations with adjectival nouns. Like "tree guy" = arborist but "tree man" = he lives in a tree, or maybe he is a tree.

One of the things that gets me about my job, is just realizing how many people own land around their dwelling and either don't want to or can't take care of it. How many people own a patch of grass, and hate mowing, and pay someone else to do it, and only have it because it's the expectation/a status symbol/the only way to get secure housing/housing with privacy?
Very American centric, I know, but still. You just see these fleets of landscape maintenance people sweeping through an HOA neighborhood with tiny patches of grass and extremely repetitive plantings, because the people living in the houses a) didn't actually have a hand in choosing the plants and b) are restricted in their choices by the rules of the HOA even if they did want to have a hand in it. No one wants to hang out on their front yard, because it's small and boring and extremely close to the road. There's no where to sit, there's nothing to do, it's only purpose is to exist as a sign that they can afford to pay someone to take care of it. Backyards are for some reason incredibly flat and covered in grass, but still not actually enjoyable to hand out in.
It really seems like fewer and fewer people actually enjoy gardening (even outside of HOAs) and yard care, and see it as a bothersome chore or something to hire out to someone else. It really seems like we should build more condos and other housing options that don't require a yard, because it seems like the number of yards is far greater that the number of people who actually like taking care of yards. Why not a bunch of condos surrounding or surrounded by parks where the kids and dogs and whatever can run around and play, and the care of the shared yard can be shared or collectively paid for?
Obviously I enjoy my yard and want to keep it, but it seems like so many people see their yard as a burden and money drain.

[ID: a webcomic:
A character wearing blue, with an angry expression, is showing their phone to a character wearing purple, and is saying “this person keeps posting about how unhappy they are. I bet they just want attention.” The purple character’s mouth is downturned, and then they say, “and why is wanting attention a bad thing?”
The next panel shows three characters, one wearing blue, one orange, and one green. They are standing around chatting. The text reads “humans are social animals.”
The same characters are now standing right next to each other, giving each other side hugs. The text reads “getting regular attention is proven to improve mental health and prevent mental illness.”
The next panel shows the blue character standing alone, holding their phone and looking sad. The text reads “when you’re doing unwell, reaching out for attention is one of the most efficient ways to improve your state.”
The last panel shows the original purple and blue characters. The purple one is saying “Attention is a natural human need, and asking for it isn’t a bad thing.” End ID.]

🚩Cult and cultlike/toxic behavior: red flags in fandom 🚩
A non-exhaustive list inspired by my 10+ years of experience in fandom, both personal and second-hand. By sharing this, I hope to make other people more aware and able to protect themselves in the future. No fandom space or friend group is worth your mental health.
They claim they have secret information and use that to lure you in
They might either lovebomb you at first or make you (feel like you have to) prove your worth
The leader(s) of the group might not feel super approachable, at least not without fear of saying the wrong thing
They seem to create or point out a divide in fandom you’d never noticed before. Likely this divide isn’t actually there in wider fandom, or the need for it is wholly unnecessary.
They create an us vs them (outsiders) situation. Their group has the most knowledge and expertise, if others critique them it’s simply cause they must’ve heard false rumors. They are always the ones who are “misunderstood”.
Questioning statements from leaders/people with high regard in the group, is not without risk. You can get dogpiled, your intelligence put into question and gaslit about your own words and feelings.
You see discussions happen and get more heated, and at the end of that discussion the person on the receiving end of the things mentioned above ^ starts apologizing profusely and/or believes they are indeed stupid. However, if this person does keep defending their stance, they might get bullied or kicked out of the server/group chat
Too much emphasis on Being Right/having the correct take or theory – it may seem it has a higher priority than empathy and tactful communication
You need to have an opinion (their opinion), because silence equals condoning or agreeing with the “other side”
Everything is a moral issue. When everything is made out to be a high-stakes issue or reflective of everyone as a person, it's easier for the leader(s) to manipulate you.
You find yourself excusing people’s behavior because you agree with their point. The way they bring their argument forward and the tone they use, become subordinate to finding out the truthTM
There is such a thing as The TruthTM in every theory, discussion or analysis
If you don't Get It, it's cause you haven't "worked on yourself enough". Or it's cause you're not trying hard enough, or you haven't done enough reading, or you have blind spots only they can see.
There is a lot of conspiratorial thinking – maybe actors are trying to send us secret messages, maybe there is a Whole Lot You Don’t Know But We Do, Trust Us, maybe this or that person in fandom has tried to attack us and are planning a bigger attack,…
You barely/don’t have fandom friends outside of this group and if you do, you tend to intentionally (whether subconsciously or not) hide your experience from them. They wouldn’t understand the way they talk, they wouldn’t understand the way it works etc
They want to know a lot of your personal information. - might only happen once you get into higher ranks
You might get (more and more) specific “tasks”, it starts becoming a part-time job instead of a hobby/fun space to hang out with friends
Of course, these red flags are not always immediately visible let alone advertised when you join a group chat/discord server/twitter or tumblr bubble. They can also be nonexistent at first and show up later. Here are some general ways to stay vigilant:
Periodically check in with your values, if they might be changing & how you feel about that.
Keep an eye on the way people (and yourself) are being treated. Is it kind? Is it fair? Do you feel on edge all the time when you’re having conversations? Is your body more tense when you’re in this online space or when certain people are around? Be honest with yourself here.
Ask yourself: Is this space becoming my only coping mechanism? Am I spending too much time here? There’s no shame in spending a lot of time on things you enjoy, but do check in with yourself sometimes whether you are actually still having fun and if you are taking things too seriously or parasocialising a lot.
There's a lot of fun to be had in fandom and a lot of good that comes out of it - don't forget that. Keep seeking that. It's why we're here!

a post-doc was doing a guest seminar at my institute and at the beginning of his presentation he was explaining why he chose birds for his evolutionary analysis - so he said "well first of all, because birds are the best and most interesting animals and it's fun to study them" and a few professors in the room gave him a very serious nod

Plenty of highly intelligent people end up getting sucked in to cults because they just wanted people to hang out with. There are antivaxxer nurses. Your ability to act on empirical reason breaks down fast if your social and emotional needs aren't being met.

I need you to understand that not everyone learned the same things in school. Not just like, you probably learned more of your own country's history than other people's, although that is also true. Curricula differ. Educational experiences differ. Even if there's something every school teaches, if they don't all teach it in the same semester of the same grade, you could miss it by changing schools at the wrong time. I never took Algebra 1, wasn't taught anything about the American Civil War, missed the second half of chemistry due to the changing schools thing. But I was in college when I found out that 6th grade health curricula don't usually include the warning signs for suicide. I probably learned more about labor history, and magical realism, than you did, but I've never actually written a Five Paragraph Essay.

Please know this illustration made me so happy to look at my eyes got a bit damp okay thank you
it's funny, I was talking to someone last night who didn't really know what an illustrator was. so when I introduced myself as one, he gave a speech that would've probably gone over well with a gallery artist, but which was precision-tailored to make any illustrator within a 50 mile radius go into eyes-glowing-red kill mode.
his speech was about how there is a difference between craft and art, and how people can practice craft (as in, skillfully execute a painting) without it having any artistic merit.
so I'm someone who gets paid to paint waffles for restaurant menus and dinosaurs for museums exhibits, and AHHHHHH! AHHHHHHH! you can't make art without it being something something you've made. does that make sense? like every illustrator I know has an individual way of approaching any given imagery that is informed by a lifetime of inspiration, and of passive intake of culture, and of the specific mistakes they make because of whatever their particular mass of grey matter deems as important thing to render or unimportant, just fuck it up.
I can make something that is informed by both a century of Canadian print-making and by my own particular neurosis, and it can also be commissioned commercial imagery that I regurgitate without care because I want to pay my mortgage. everything is art, nothing isn't art, art is something sticky and impossible to shake off of you.
anyway he got very wide-eyed and said "I'm sorry if I offended you," so today I feel a bit bad for having gotten so, uh.... excited.
