Recovery Month help is on the way
Do you suffer from depression, anxiety, PTSD, addictions, grief but don't really know how to go about getting help or you want to be anonymous... maybe you cant afford therapy ( $$$$) ?
I hear this from so many people. Including myself. I have been in a grief cycle for almost 2 years now and have been very resistant to talking about it. Until yesterday - I discovered a FREE app... I know this sounds like an ad. No. Just sharing the wealth of information to those that need it.
Tumblr media
WHITE FLAG
A FREE app - Johnny McCoy started it after his own experience with PTSD. Just download the WhiteFlag App, create your anonymous account, and start getting the help you need now, whenever you need it. WhiteFlag has already helped over 100,000 users take control of their mental health, one day and one issue at a time. WhiteFlag is more than an app. It's a mental health movement, with thousands more joining it every day. And it all came about because one man refused to give in to his abusers. Thank you, Jonny. Thank you for staying here with us, and thank you for everything you do.

Gratitude
Over the weekend I was in California to help my Mom attend a family reunion and celebration of her life. It was hectic, troublesome and    One of my son’s had to have emergency surgery for a burst appendix on Sunday. My Mom brain kicks in and I am panicky about - "oh my gosh- Im sitting in an airport, I have to get home"
He is 37 years old, has a wife and 5 kids... He doesn't need his Mom freaking out over his appendix.... BUT we do. We can't help it.  He was fine and went home that night.
On Monday - tho he didn't go to work, he was busy doing his thing... Posting and sharing studies to his company from his home office.
“In a new study... appreciation drives higher engagement!"Jack Zenger and Joe Folkman share some powerful insights related to managers effectively giving recognition and appreciation.Managers who are in the top 10% of their organization at giving recognition and appreciation, saw 3x higher employee engagement scores on their teams than managers who were in the bottom 10% of their organization at giving recognition and appreciation. This is further evidence that frequent and consistent recognition with expressions of gratitude is a top skill for managers to develop.
Thanks Jack and Joe and Harvard Business School for the article."  https://hbr.org/2022/09/do-you-tell-your-employees-you-appreciate-them
Here is the article if you wish to read it- its very good.... BUT here is what I want to say about "expressions of gratitude"   DON’T just express gratitude at work. Tell your family. Your friends... The guy who fixes your sprinklers. The kid who walks your dog. Thank you.   The more grateful we are the more able we are to manage stress and unexpected emergencies that pop up in our day to day journeys.

Happy People don’t do drugs
Years ago while working with individuals in re-entry and recovery- I discovered a simple truth. While alcohol and substance abuse ( and other addictive behaviors) are multilayered and complex in their evolution of use/underlying or contributing causes. One thing stood out... while other professionals were screeching " It's a disease" or "once an addict always an addict" ( not helpful) and psych doctors just wanted to push meds... treatment was failing. "Happy people don't do drugs". Think about it in the simplest of views. I dont know a single person -even a teen wanting to experiment that can convince me , they were/are Happy. Happy, being "well being". Happy don't do drugs. Let's work on our well being. https://lnkd.in/g42zRcmM #positivepsychology #wellbeing #recovery #behavioralhealth If you are a professional in BH or SUD and need help with payor enrollment or program management ( licensing, accreditations, policies). text me 8015284877

The road to recovery can be complicated and filled with failures, detours and dead ends'.
In the treatment and behavioral health world, changes in access for individuals to get help have improved — but still far from great. There are still closed doors and lack of funding. Even when funding is available through your insurance, it can be limited and barely helpful.
Our expertise in this world of treatment and therapy is what sets us apart in the credentialing and payor enrollment world. We know this struggle. If you are a provider- LET US HELP YOU.
We can create a relationship that benefits your particular service needs- whether it is consulting or full spectrum enrollment services. Let’s talk.

Be of Good Cheer
Hey, addict and alcoholic. Be of good cheer. I know inside you have this incredible pain and suffering but guess what…you rock! You are an incredible human being. You are beautiful and full of life, hiding behind the trauma of your addictive behavior.
Get over it. Get over yourself. Stop being such a cry baby and victim. Having an addiction sucks but you ARE NOT what you smoke or drink… Addict is a label describing a painful condition brought about by a particular behavior. IT IS NOT who you are….it is about WHAT YOU DO. And behind the lie that you tell that you love boozing and doping and that it’s cool and you’re cool — it’s obvious that lifestyle is not working for you.
You can be cured. You can stop. Yes, you can. Don’t give me that bull crap “ I can’t stop”. Of course you can. The idea that you can’t stop boozing, doping, gambling, over-porn viewing your life away is a lie.
Yes, I get all that scientific evidence, I get the disease model… All that information overload would leave me powerless too! No one ever died of being a “label” but they have died as a result of their “labeled behavior”… just like a reckless driver kills.
You are not alone in having a mind full of false beliefs — boozers, druggies, gamblers, abusers and NORMIES alike live a life of liar, liar pants on fire. But this is not about others you may want to blame for where you are today. You and you alone can make this change.
Stop living up to the expectation of the label. You are not an addict or alcoholic. Yes, you do overuse-misuse-abuse booze and/or drugs. Yes, you do spend so much time on the internet or gambling, boozing, doping and abusing others, that you have become a Slave to the behavior- instead of the Master.
Stop saying “ Hi, I’m John, I’m an addict.” Instead –let’s say and believe — “ HI , I’m John, I’m overcoming an illness and looking forward to being healthy and loving life.”
Get Over it. Life is GOOD so just stop whining that no one loves you or people are mean to you or that your wife is a bitch or that someone owes you money — that life is unfair. Wha wha wha… Take a deep breath and change directions.
Choice and decision are not the same but are partners in the process… we make decisions to do some things that maybe we wouldn’t CHOOSE to do but know that we must do- so we decide.
YOU CAN STOP your addictive behavior today. You are not powerless. YOU have the bounty of the universe at your feet to assist you. Yes, you will be more effective when you give yourself over to a spiritual higher power to strengthen you and fill you with faith that YOU CAN DO IT.
You are a son or daughter of GOD. You have all the abilities and capabilities, inner strength and innate divine nature to overcome any and all adversity in your life… including being held hostage by your false beliefs and the bonds of the resulting addiction.
Now, just because I say, YOU CAN STOP- does not mean you won’t need help. As a person who is suffering, it is important to get to Detox, engage in a treatment program, go to a support group that is appropriate for your situation ( 12 steps, NA, Alanon, etc) get a good therapist, medical doctor, nutritionist, fitness trainer, life coach that can create a circle of influence for you to heal. It doesn’t mean it will be easy but in the simplicity of such a declaration — you are light years ahead in your restoration to health if you believe in yourself first.
You can have a life of good cheer. I am cheering for you over here- jumping in your corner!
Now, that being said- I wrote that post in 2010. Do I still agree with it’s premise?
YES!!!! But I also understand the process is hard. The road to recovery can be complicated and filled with failures, detours and dead ends'.

Swimmers to your mark
Tumblr media
The Olympics will start in a few days - I love good competition but we also can see how important good communication or bad communication can ruin the Olympic experience for some athletes.
 https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/swimming-six-polish-swimmers-sent-home-japan-after-admin-blunder-2021-07-20/
Apparently they chose 6 swimmers too many !!!  Seems like a pretty obvious blunder to me... but just goes to show- gotta read the rules.
Communication matters.  Listening with intention matters. Good instruction matters.
No matter what work you are engaged in- we can all benefit from better communication skills.
Enjoy the 2020- delayed Olympics. May the best athlete win.

What do all those terms mean?
Tumblr media
In Substance Abuse Disorders and mental health treatment, there are terms used to define the type of service and specialty offered. These will often be determined by the state license granted to the facility or group. It is important to become familiar with the definition and how that impacts the type of payer enrollment sought.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP Program)
A Partial Hospitalization Program is good for individuals leaving residential treatment who understand that while they have more work to do in addiction recovery, a 24-hour setting is no longer necessary.
It’s quite common for patients to step down to PHP after inpatient treatment and sometimes again to IOP.
For others, a PHP program might be a needed resource after a relapse of symptoms that bring the disease of addiction out of remission. Though programs vary, PHP is generally 6 hours a day, 5 days a week.
Residential Treatment Center ( RTC)
Residential programs are available for substance abuse treatment, mental health treatment, dual diagnosis. By definition they are “inpatient”. Patients stay overnight- often long term specific to their needs and diagnosis. Some medical supervision is provided depending on the specialty but it is not as intensive as PHP.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP Program)
In an Intensive Outpatient Program, therapy sessions are typically 3 hours a day, 3 days per week.
While IOP treatment can involve one on one counseling, there is a focus on group therapy.
These sessions aim to help patients develop relapse prevention skills, as well as learn techniques of cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational enhancement therapy or dialectical behavior therapy, depending on each person’s needs. The lengths of IOP programs differ from person to person as they start to manage a successful recovery from addiction.
Social Detox and Medical Detox
Some states do not differentiate between social and medical detox in their licensing and that may require a letter of explanation to be submitted to the payer.
Social detox for substance abuse disorders and alcohol abuse can be outpatient as well as inpatient.
SAMSHA defines social detox as : “Social detoxification programs are defined as short term, nonmedical treatment services for individuals with substance use disorders. A social detoxification program offers room, board, and interpersonal support to intoxicated individuals and individuals in substance use withdrawal..”
Medical Detox is that which is supervised by a physician and would include medial interventions and medications.  Medical detoxification provides a safe environment for withdrawal from drugs or alcohol under medical supervision. When/if necessary, you receive medication to relieve some symptoms associated with detox.
Evidence-based Practice (EBP): The criteria list multiple examples of EBPs. In addition, each state proposed a number of EBPs in its planning grant applications. States must establish a minimum set of EBPs to be used in every CCBHC within the state. Some communities may require EBPs that have been adapted to best meet the populations that CCBHCs serve. Applications to participate in the demonstration program will be evaluated on their “description and justification of the evidence-based practices that the state has required.”
Severe substance abuse disorder (SUD): The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) no longer uses the terms substance abuse and substance dependence. Rather, it refers to substance use disorders, which are classified as mild, moderate, or severe. The level of severity is determined by the number of diagnostic criteria met by an individual.
ASAM: ASAM stands for American Society of Addiction Medicine  and is the accepted measuring tool used to evaluate levels of treatment needed. Often enrollment applications will require you to know the level of ASAMs used in the programs offered.
SBIRT is an early intervention approach that targets individuals with nondependent substance use to provide effective strategies for intervention prior to the need for more extensive or specialized treatment. This approach differs from the primary focus of specialized treatment of individuals with more severe substance use, or those who meet the criteria for diagnosis of a substance use disorder. ( Medicare program)
Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is the use of medications, in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies, to provide a “whole-patient” approach to the treatment of substance use disorders. Medications used in MAT are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and MAT programs are clinically driven and tailored to meet each patient’s needs. The typical medications that are covered in a MAT are suboxone and buprenophrene
Opioid Treatment Program (OPT)   This is for groups and facilities that would dispense and monitor methadone. It is very specific and would have a specific license depending on the state. Medicare would require information regarding who dispenses and who monitors.
If you need additional help in defining programs so you are compliant with licensing or health care payers. You can visit SAMSHA for their guidelines:
TIPS: Treatment Improvement Protocols (TIPs) are developed by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), part of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Each TIP involves the development of topic-specific best-practice guidelines for the prevention and treatment of substance use and mental disorders. TIPs draw on the experience and knowledge of clinical, research, and administrative experts of various forms of treatment and prevention. TIPs are distributed to facilities and individuals across the country. Published TIPs can be accessed via the Internet at http://store.samhsa.gov.
When a group or facility seeks to join a network- they will be asked to provide daily programs, daily schedules, policy and procedures. For ea license they hold.
If you need help with payer enrollment or credentialing for your staff, group or facility. Give us a call we will be happy to consult or be your third party vender. email me [email protected]

Don’t derail your conversations. Nothing worse than losing a client because you are fumbling for words or got your bun in a bunch. Improve your skills. I know how frustrating it can be when you can feel you aren’t on the same page as the person you are communication with- don’t make enemies of people who can bring revenue to your business because of poor communication skills.
