Icon courtesy of @astrogyaru! If you're confused, click here to go to a Night Vale FAQ. The automated queue updates five times a day from 1.30pm to 11.30pm GMT. "things my friends made" get next day queue priority, and things that I make and particularly important/striking posts bypass it altogether. I tag by category, characters, and the one ship, for there is none other*. Trigger warnings will be marked by "trigger/", and if there are spoilers I will use the tags "spoilers" and the name of the episode it spoils for. If there are any tags/triggers I miss, please do not hesitate to let me know and I'll re-tag accordingly. * = This is me being facetious; there are actually ships other than Cecil/Carlos. Cecilos is just the most prominent and 'truly canon' of them. Enjoy!

your F.A.Q part about how its ''boring'' or ''disapoiting'' to imagine Cecil white is pretty gross. Its literally people's imagination. I understand not drawing Carlos as white since he is oficially latino but saying that you shouldnt imagine the rest of characters the way you want because you dont particulary like it? the hell is wrong with you thats so gross and toxic ''it allows lighter-skinned fans to shake out of their locked-in white privileged ways.'' must be the dumbest thing I ever read
I’m sorry - did I go into a timeloop just then? I was under the impression it was May 2017, but apparently it’s now 2014 again
Seriously, though, I literally haven’t touched this blog in like two or three years? My impression of the fandom through regained-osmosis has been pretty much that white Cecils have become passe to all but the newest of artists who aren’t equipped to know any better? I have discussed on this blog before, and it has been discussed elsewhere before, the harm that defaulting to white in the main protagonist and pushing that as if it’s canon can do to fans of color?? why are we having this fucking conversation as if it’s still relevant??? especially with me????
anyway headcanoning Cecil and other high-profile characters from Night Vale as black or Asian or Native American or other non-white races allows lighter-skinned fans to shake out of their locked-in white privileged ways

Not trying to "eliminate" PoC. Jut saying it's unlikely. But why does Cecil have to be a PoC? What's wrong with Carlos, Josie, Tamika, Dana, Mayor Winchel, etc?
Part of it is: As cool as those characters are, they’re not protagonists. They’re not the primary narrative Point of View. In a world where non-white protagonists are still pretty rare even as the ratio of non-white secondary characters rising, a non-white Cecil - be that black, Native American, Vietnamese, black with albinism, or anything else that isn’t white - is invaluable for people who need more of that kind of representation in this world.
Another, slightly stronger part of it is: Black people in the fandom have had too much hatred in the past from individuals who are less polite than you decrying them for POCecil to compromise on their points now. I’ve actually been out of the ‘main fandom’ for some time (although I did buy the novel), so things may have calmed down on that front, but there was a far too long period of time where anything other than Purple Eyes White Dragon Tentacle Cecil (or actually-a-dog!Cecil in some cases) were mocked, flamed, and their artists harassed to the point of suicide-baiting. Ask a Night Vale fandom veteran like nikipaprika or orcasoup about internleland some time. The fandom’s had white supremacists and actual Nazis galore in it.
After that, when asked stuff like “why does Cecil have to be a POC”, people tend to get justifiably pissed and reactionary.
Besides, one time, the Night Vale creators ran a T-shirt contest for Cecil/Carlos, and of the finalists that actually had a clear Cecil rather than a silhouette, none of them were white. That must mean POCecil is canon on some non-Death-of-the-Author level.
In short, it’s two parts “Because canon doesn’t say he can’t be” to two parts “Because angry fandom racists have said he can’t be”.

Right except poc that convert to Judaism don't have jewish last names. I'm just saying. Also Joseph FINK. People always say write what you know, so I think JF probs wrote this main character as Jewish because maybe he grew up w that culture. Kind of like the Coen Brothers or Martin Scorsese, you know?
What about POC who married into a Jewish family and whose younger generations have retained the darker skin colours AND surname ever since? However you try, the POC possibility can’t be eliminated altogether unless Cecil the character says straight out “I’m a white man”.

Actually I don't think Cecil is a PoC. I think he's Jewish (aka prob white) because his middle name, Gershwin, is a common anglicized form of an Ashkenazi surname, Gershovicz (I know because Gershwin is my last name too, but it's from Gershvin). Because this is his middle name, it can be assumed that this was his mothers surname making his mother, by default, a Jewish-American. According to Jewish law, if your mother is Jewish than so are you. L' Chaim! Just food for thought.
I don’t know how sincere you are in this, so I’m going to put my rebuttal as tactfully as possible:
Black Jewish people exist, same as white Jewish people exist, Asian Jewish people, and Jewish people of any configuration
Being Jewish or practicing Judaism is not necessarily intricately linked to race
Whether being Jewish makes you a person of color or white is dependent on the individual perception of the individual Jewish person
Just food for thought.

Fires of various colors burn in the sands outside of houses. Plus, an early anniversary present to remember, and how resurfacing roaches can lead to a decidedly Freudian slippery slope.
NSFW, mutually consensual, episode-style. Set after Carlos comes home.
So, I’m sort of back? And hoping this is good?

Christmas Hiatus
In the light of my huge inability to fill my queue to an adequate level lately, due to a mixture of lack of art/meta from the hiatus, low spoon levels, and paralyzing fear of disappointing anyone, I have no choice but to put CCE&CC on a Christmas break. I've converted the 26 posts already in my queue to drafts, and will try to fill the drafts properly over the next few weeks. Once my to-be-queued list hits 100+, I will restuff the queue, and posts will continue as normal.
Apologies to everybody for the inconvenience.

I’d love to be near Carlos again. We’ve had a great time talking nearly every night but its… hard to know how much ‘meeting eyes’ or ‘touching hands’ means until it’s gone.
Cecil Palmer killing me yet again.

I still do not understand this mentality some of the fandom has that Carlos needs to dedicate his life to accommodating Cecil, but that Cecil should never accommodate Carlos.
Carlos has spent some of his time looking for a door, but has also gotten sidetracked with things that he finds interesting, and for that he’s considered selfish for not dedicating more time to finding Cecil. Meanwhile, for all we know, Cecil has spent zero time looking for a door on his end, and he’s seen as someone to be pitied.
When Carlos says that he wants Cecil to visit him in his new home, some people think he’s out of line and needs to get his act together. But when Cecil wants Carlos to come back to Night Vale, it’s seen as completely justifiable and, again, the responsibility falls purely on Carlos to put his personal interests aside to meet Cecil’s needs.
I know that not all of the fandom thinks this way, but a lot of people seem to buy into this idea, and it bothers me. Relationships are a two-way street. If people think that Carlos needs to spend more time trying to find Cecil, why aren’t they holding Cecil to the same standards? Why is it that when Cecil finds joy in Night Vale people are happy for him, but when Carlos finds happiness where he is people get upset?
The bottom line is, they both love each other, they both want to be together again, and they’re both making an attempt to keep their relationship going while they’re apart. Neither one of them is doing everything in their power to find the other, because they both have interests of their own besides their relationship, and that’s okay.

Just, as a bit of an open-ended question, may I ask why people seem to think Carlos not wanting to come home is a new factor of his personality, and he’s suddenly really selfish? It isn’t! Carlos has been like this for a long time, as in, since before the Strex Corp arc long. Cecil has mentioned several times that Carlos has missed dates, among other things; I don’t think it’s new for Carlos to be absorbed in what he’s doing and to get more invested in that than anything else. I don’t think he does it to spite anyone, and I don’t think he’s being selfish. I genuinely think he can’t really help himself when he gets like that. I think Carlos wants the best of both worlds (no pun intended). He actually does want to be with Cecil, he just doesn’t want to leave the otherworld because it’s so interesting.
Again, this isn’t new. These developments, to me, aren’t shocking. I think this arc will have development for Carlos in store, as well as development for Cecil. You know how this arc’s major purpose is to let Cecil live for himself, but also, to think for himself? I think part of this arc will serve to help Carlos stop and try to consider Cecil’s standpoint in this, no matter how he ends up doing that. By which I mean, he may realize that through his own means or through something a little rougher than that. It’s character development, and anything goes. But the latter, at this point, is starting to seem more plausible.
Look, some things we know about Carlos is that he isn’t all that good at communication and does things that seem dangerous and scare or concern people, and he doesn’t really think about what they think because he’s very much focused on his work, right?
I think Carlos is trying to not do that. I can’t remember if I’ve said this before or not, but more or less what I said is that Carlos seemed to have to remind himself to ask Cecil (in “Rumbling” if I recall correctly) how he was doing. I think Carlos is trying to tell Cecil he misses him but he also doesn’t want to leave his friends in the otherworld or let go of any vital research. I think if anyone goes to show Carlos still cares a lot about Cecil…it’d be that.
Look, the bottom line with Carlos is sort of what happened in “One Year Later”. Remember that? Remember how he called for personal reasons? Remember how he thought about how Cecil and prioritized that over science? Not only does that flat out prove Cecil means a lot to Carlos (this is by the way of romance/devotion package), but it shows that if anyone’s going end up pulling him back because he cares about them, it’s going to be Cecil.
I might be greatly misinterpreting something…let me know if I am. This is just my take on this! nvn

forgive the crappy phone pic, but I finally kinda got a mostly-headcanon-compliant image of them both not only on paper, but together to boot!

Night Vale for the fandom meme?
who is the aesthetic blogger: cecil palmer
who is the sj blogger: cecil palmer (you never said these things were mutually exclusive)
who is the fandom blogger: tamika reblogs a lot of literature-adaptation gifsets
who puts everything under a read more: sarah sultan
who posts the most selfies: dana
who is the biggest meme enthusiast: the brown stone spire
who makes really quality themes: carlos attempted to spruce up his blog but botched the html and now his blog theme is literally whatever the people who view the blog want to see, like with cecil viewing it it’s one giant love heart with bubble writing and for dana it’s a string of dna strands and for carlos himself it’s in an easily readable font, does that count?
who reblogs posts with pointless comments: stop it steve carlsberg they’re not going to take you seriously however hard you try :(
who has the most followers: there’s a night vale law mandating that you follow the mayor’s blog and the sheriff’s blog. sorry, they dont make the rules. wait, yes they do. they are in full control of the rules. marcus is attempting to bribe the politicians to make it a law they follow his blog too, but they’re strangely reluctant to budge on this one
who uses 12 emojis in every post: cecil and carlos are neck and neck in this regard
who had a really embarrassing superwholock phase that no one is allowed to speak of ever again: hiram mcdaniels. he doesn’t want to talk about it.
