Letters Across the Universe
I always imagine this old, grim looking man wearing a tattered leather hat and a matching coat. As he enters a small postal office on a faraway mining planet, a tiny bell rings. The lady behind the desk looks up, staring at the mysterious figure standing in front of her. Smoke escapes his mouth.
Why it is always the man, looking like a hero of the ancient times, and an old lady behind the counter, I don't know. Maybe it's because I want to relate to him, even idolize him a little. Or because this picture just seems epic.
Anyways,
"Put out the 'cig", the lady says in a rough voice, pointing to three metal plates hanging on one of the wooden walls. All of them show the same symbol, a red cross on top a lit cigarette, but only one of them has English text beneath: "No Smoking".
The man grunts. He flicks the cigarette onto the rough wooden planks on the floor and, before the lady can share her disfavor, a heavy boot stumps onto it, suffocating the flame. The man takes a few more steps to the counter, the eyes of the lady resting on him, readily observing. Then, he speaks.
"I have a letter."

Let there be Light - short story
Follow a young woman on her journey through a dangerous steampunk inspired city to bring back all the lights in the sky.
excerpt:
“I gave you a chance, Abigail!” my father’s smoky voice was talking down to me. “But, once again, you disappointed. Now put this on – right this instant!”
He was talking about this golden funnel-shaped dress. In his words, it would not only resemble the bright future he will bring to mankind but is also a ‘brilliant’ metaphor for his ‘genius’ design. Knowing me, he got two identical dresses made. One he gave me the day before, telling me I should wear it on ‘his big night’, and the second one after the first one somehow caught fire right before we got on stage.
“And do not forget to smile!” he told me, pointing at his big mouth, showing me his yellow stained teeth.
His voice was loud. Everybody heard him screaming, but no one cared. None of them would dare to speak up against the person paying them. All I wanted was to burn his carefully cultivated moustache.
But instead, I walked in his shadow, following him outside onto the balcony. The crowd cheered as he shook hands with the mayor. I could only see his brown, copper-coloured suit from the back as he stepped up to the balustrade and waved. I smiled and held back tears.
The plaza was dark. Up here were some lanterns, running on oil, but I could only see rough outlines and shadows of the hundreds or maybe thousands of people gathered there that fateful night. Everybody knew something was going on as these steel and brass poles erupted in the whole city, but most people had no clue what was about to happen.
As he stood there, talking, thanking his friends, beautiful daughter, and late wife, I looked up at the sky.
“I’m happy you don’t have to see this, mother,” I whispered.
And then, he stretched out his arms, pushed his chest outward, let his head fall into his neck, and proclaimed proudly:
“LET THERE BE LIGHT!”
As, suddenly, a wave of light swallowed the entire city in seconds. And, at the same time, flushed away all the lights in the sky. The reaction was loud. Some people cheered, but I could only hear the screams as I was blinded by all the lights.
