~ Carmen's POV ~
I woke up with the sun shining through the curtains. I squinted and covered my face with a pillow. After lying there for about an hour, debating whether I should actually get up, I finally dragged myself out of bed to brush my teeth and head downstairs.
I walked over to the kitchen island and sat down. Aaron had his back to me, focused on making breakfast.
"Morning," he said over his shoulder.
"Morning. Glad to see you finally wearing a shirt," I replied with a tired smirk.
He turned around and placed a plate of avocado on toast and eggs in front of me. "Haha, very funny," he said, clearly not amused. I let out a small chuckle as he poured us some coffee. When he handed me a mug, his eyes trailed down to my dinosaur pajamas.
"Nice... PJs?" he asked, trying not to laugh.
I groaned and rolled my eyes. "Shut up. These were the only clean ones I had."
That was enough to make him laugh out loud, but the doorbell rang before he could say anything else.
Aaron and I looked at each other before shouting at the same time, "NOT IT!"
Unfortunately, I was too slow.
I shot him a glare before getting up and heading to the door.
When I opened it, I was met with a wide-eyed Aphmau and an even wider smile that felt a little intense for this early in the day.
"Hi, Carmen!" she chirped.
"Hi," I yawned and walked back toward the kitchen.
"I like your PJs," she said as she followed me.
"Thanks. My choices were limited," I mumbled while sitting down. Aaron, now with his bandana on, was already making another cup of coffee, this one noticeably sweeter.
"Morning, Aph," he said, sliding the mug to her.
"Hi, Aaron! Can we do that Frozen sing-along now?" she asked with way too much energy.
I turned to Aaron and raised an eyebrow. He looked a little flustered under his bandana. He glanced at me, then at Aph, and finally sighed.
"Sure."
Aphmau let out a soft "Yay" and turned to me."Do you want to join us, Carmen?"
I finished the last bite of my breakfast before replying. "As much as I'd love to watch Aaron sing 'Let It Go,' I actually have to unpack. It's still a mess upstairs." I grabbed my coffee and was about to head up when Aaron stopped me.
"Before you go, could you grab the mail?"
I sighed. "Fine. But I'm changing first. I don't want the new neighbors seeing me like this." I gestured to the dino pajamas and went upstairs.
I changed into a white tank top and some baggy jeans, then headed outside to grab the mail.
I figured nothing would go wrong.
I was very wrong.
"Heyyy baby," a voice said behind me. I froze and cursed internally as a guy walked around and leaned against the mailbox.
He had pale skin, white hair, and green eyes.
He smiled and wiggled his eyebrows. "Name's Travis."
"Hi," I replied quickly while trying to open the mailbox. Of course, it was jammed. Seriously, couldn't we just get emails?
He smirked and leaned closer. "Do I know you? Because you look like my next girlfriend." He winked, clearly proud of himself.
I rolled my eyes and kept struggling with the mailbox. I silently wished aliens would abduct me. No luck.
"You must be tired," he continued. "You've been running through my mind all day."
Right as he was about to say something else, the mailbox finally opened. I grabbed the mail and hugged it to my chest, walking away without saying anything.
Was it mean to ignore him?
Absolutely not.
But just as I passed him, he reached out and grazed my butt.
Nope.
I didn't even think. I just reacted.
I dropped the mail and punched him so hard he dropped to the ground.
"Fuck," I muttered, staring at his body.
Great. I've only been here three days and I've already committed a crime. Just my luck.
Then, right on cue, two guys walked out of their house to get the mail. One had tan skin, brown hair, and light blue eyes. The other was pale with blonde hair and blue eyes. They were in the middle of a heated debate but stopped dead when they saw me.
Double Fuck.

~Carmen’s Pov~
I woke up the next morning to someone shaking me and the sun shining directly in my face.
“What the fuck?” I grumble, covering my face with the pillow.
“Wake up.” Aaron pulls the pillow from my face. I squint when I see him in that bandana over his eyes and that stupid sweater he refuses to zip up.
“What time is it?” I yawn and sit up.
“Twelve.”
“Oh, shit.” I rub my eyes.
“I took the liberty of charging your phone for you.” He tosses it to me, but I’m still half asleep, so it hits me in the chest. I yelp, but he doesn’t react.
The doorbell rings, and Aaron heads to answer it. He gets halfway before turning back toward me. “The Wi-Fi password is on the fridge, since I know you’ll die without it.”
I roll my eyes and throw a pillow at him as he turns around and makes his way to the door. I sit there for a bit, contemplating my life choices, before getting up and making my way to the fridge.
As I’m putting in the Wi-Fi, I hear Aaron laughing with
 a girl? Aaron? Laughing? If I hadn’t known him since childhood, I would’ve thought he was a robot. Talking to him is like talking to a rock. And even then, the rock would have more personality. I mean, I’ve known him for years, so I’ve seen every single emotion, but it’s rare for him to show emotions with other people. This person must be serious.
I peek from behind the wall and see him talking to a short girl with black hair, caramel eyes, and a galaxy shirt. I recognize her from Aaron’s high school pictures. I didn’t know they were that close. She must be his girlfriend
 Maybe the shirtless thing actually works. Maybe I should try it

I walk back to the couch and plop down on it. I put my hand over my mouth to yawn - and immediately regret it. My breath is not pretty. I get up and walk past Aaron and the girl to go upstairs. I don’t acknowledge them. I might’ve seemed like a bitch, but I just wasn’t in the mood to socialize. Maybe this is why I don’t have many friends

Aaron never gave me a house tour, so I have to open every door to find the bathroom. Once I finally find it, I realize I don’t have a towel. I sigh and make my way downstairs.
I clear my throat. “Hi, sorry to interrupt. Aaron, where are the towels?”
Aaron turns to me, his cheeks slightly flushed. “Oh, under the sink.”
“Alright, thanks.” I turn to go back upstairs. I’m halfway up when the girl speaks.
“Hi, I’m Aphmau. What’s your name?”
I sigh and slowly turn. “Hi, Aphmau?” I look at her, hoping I pronounced it right. She nods, so I continue. “I’m Carmen. I’m Aaron’s friend. It’s nice to meet you.”
I hold out my hand, silently praying she can’t smell my breath. She shakes it, and then there’s an awkward silence. I clear my throat.
“Aaron never told me he had a girlfriend.” My cheek twitches up in a smirk as I nudge Aaron with my shoulder.
She blushes. “Oh, he isn’t- we aren’t-”
“She isn’t my girlfriend,” Aaron cuts in.
I stand there, blinking. “You guys aren’t dating?” Aphmau shakes her head.
“Really?”
Aphmau laughs. “No, we’re just friends.”
I look at both of them with squinted eyes. Aaron is purposely avoiding eye contact, as if I’d know what he’s thinking.
“Right
 ‘Just friends.’ But-”
“Don’t you have a shower to get to?” Aaron growls.
I roll my eyes while Aphmau puts a hand over her mouth to laugh.
“Well, it was nice meeting you, Aphmau
 I hope we can be friends.” I give her a hopeful smile.
“Of course!!”
My smile widens. I glance at Aaron, and he has a small, proud smile on his face. I say goodbye and head upstairs to shower.
~ Aphmau’s POV ~
Aaron turns to me after Carmen disappears up the stairs. “Sorry about that. She told me she needed a place to stay, so I offered.”
I smile. “It’s alright. She seems nice.” I pause to think. “How long have you guys known each other?”
Aaron pauses for a beat to think. “Our dads are really close friends. We’ve known each other since we were really young but lost contact after middle school. We reconnected about a year ago.”
“I see.” A thought crosses my mind, sending a slight pang of jealousy through my chest. Weird. “Do you guys have something going on between you two?”
I couldn’t see his reaction because of the bandana, but the way his eyebrows shot up told me the question caught him off guard. Instead of getting flustered, he looked
 disgusted by even the thought of it.
“Absolutely not. Don’t get me wrong, she’s a good person. But she’s like a second sister to me.”
I nod, feeling a bit more relaxed. I don’t know why I care. Like I said, Aaron and I are just friends.
~ Carmen’s POV ~
I walk downstairs after finishing my shower and see Aaron and Aphmau still talking by the door. They’re so wrapped up in their conversation that they don’t even notice me walk past them. I decide not to interrupt and head straight to the couch.
As soon as I sit down, my phone pings. It’s a message from Florence.
Flo
Have you watched it?
Me
Watched what?
Flo
Frozen duhh???
Me
OMG, will you quit it with the Frozen stuff?
Flo
NEVER
It’s been forever since that movie came out and I can’t believe you still haven’t watched it!
Me
Calm down, it hasn’t been that long.
Plus, why are you so worked up about a KIDS’ movie?
Flo
That movie changed my life, okay.
Me
Fine 🙄
I’ll watch it now since I don’t have anything else to do.
Flo:
Yay! TYYY 😘
Me
🙄
I smile. I’m really going to miss seeing Flo every day. She’s one of the very few friends I have, and she’s helped me through so much - everything with my ex-friends, my parents, and my ex-boyfriend. It was pretty disappointing when I couldn’t move in with her, but I understood. With her girlfriend and the thousands of pets she’s adopted, there wouldn’t have been much space anyway. Besides, I wanted to get as far away from that city as possible.
I toss my phone onto the couch and reach over to grab the remote. After picking the movie, I lean back just as Aphmau and Aaron walk in.
“What are you doing?” Aaron asks, eyeing me, then the castle on the TV, then me again.
I shrug. “Frozen. Flo wanted me to watch it.”
“Well, can you watch it somewhere else? We want to hang out here, and we’re not staying if you’re watching that.”
The nerve of this guy. “Oh yeah, great idea. I’ll just watch it in my room - or better yet, my own house,” I say sarcastically.
Aaron rolls his eyes. “Just watch it another time-” He’s interrupted by a squeal. His shoulders tense as his head whips toward Aphmau, but they relax when he sees her smiling.
“Are you watching Frozen?!” she gasps before running to the couch and practically launching herself onto it next to me.
I nod, slightly concerned
 and maybe a little scared.
“Can I watch it with you?!” she asks, her eyes wide and shining like she’s about to burst from excitement.
“You
 want to watch it with me?” She nods enthusiastically. My cheek twitches up into a small smile. “Uh
 sure, okay.”
“But Aph-” Aaron starts, but she shushes him before he can finish. He looks at me for backup, but I just shrug and smirk to taunt him. He growls and stalks off.
~~~
A couple of hours later, Aphmau leaves.
We talked for a while after the movie, and honestly, it was amazing. I really hope we become close friends. There’s a certain genuineness about her that makes me feel like I can trust her. But then that voice shows up again. ‘She doesn't actually like you. She's just tolerating you because of Aaron.’ I immediately push that voice down.
There are very few people I trust that aren't family, Flo, and Aaron, and that is because I've known them for years. I don’t usually trust new people so easily. They can stab you in the back when you least expect it. Trust me, I’ve been there.
~~~
I had walked into the apartment I shared with my boyfriend. It was our two-year anniversary, and I wanted to surprise him by coming home early.
The second I stepped inside, I knew something was off.
I heard voices coming from the bedroom... three of them. At first, I thought he just had some friends over, but then I heard moaning. My stomach twisted as I moved toward the door. I pushed it open and froze when I saw my boyfriend, Axel, having sex with two people I thought were my friends.
I blinked repeatedly, trying to convince myself this was just some nightmare, but it wasn’t. My mouth went dry, and it felt like all the air had been sucked out of my lungs. I stood there for what felt like forever before they finally noticed me and stopped.
Axel pulled away from them and walked toward me. When he reached me, I snapped back to reality. Without thinking, I pushed him away. I could see the two girls smirking behind him. I didn’t say a word. I just packed my bags for the night and left.
I wasn’t going to waste my breath on him. There was no point besides, I didn’t want to give those girls the satisfaction of seeing me cry.
I’ve never felt that kind of betrayal since high school.
I had met those girls a few months ago and trusted them far too easily. I thought I had finally found people I could rely on without the years of hesitation I usually had. Only to find out that they had only befriended me to get closer to my boyfriend and had been talking about me behind my back the entire time.
Since highschool I always had trouble making friends. However, this just made it even harder. That little voice in the back of my mind always whispered that, once they got what they wanted, they’d betray me too.
~~~
I head upstairs to brush my teeth. As I pass the room Aaron set up for me - all clean and ready - I start to feel a little guilty. He seemed excited to hang out with Aphmau - who he definitely has a thing for - and I kind of stole her away from him.
I glance toward Aaron’s room and see the light still on.
I walk over and give the door a light knock.
“Come in,” I hear his deep voice say.
I push the door open and see him sitting on his bed without his bandana. “Hi,” I say softly.
“Hello.”
There’s a small silence between us. After a couple of beats, I finally break it. “Listen
 I’m sorry if I ‘hogged’ Aphmau. I just got excited that someone genuinely wanted to hang out with me - without wanting anything else. And
 thanks for setting up the room for me.”
He stares at me for a moment without saying anything, which makes my anxiety spike a little. But then he chuckles and pats the empty spot on the bed in front of him.
“It’s alright. You don’t need to apologize. It’s good that you’re making friends. I know how hard it is for you to open up to people. I’m proud of you.”
I smile, but my expression turns serious again. “But
 you seemed upset earlier. I don’t want any bad blood between us, especially if I’m going to stay here forever.”
His face softens. “Trust me when I say it’s okay. Besides, I wouldn’t mind if you stayed here forever. It’s good to have company.”
We both chuckle before hugging each other.
“Good night,” I say as I leave his room.
I head downstairs to grab my bags and bring them up to my room. After doing my night routine, I finally crawl into bed and drift off to sleep.
~Carmen POV~
As I stepped out of the cab, still feeling tired after a flight that felt like forever, I turned to the cab driver and thanked him, handing him his money. He yelled the classic “please give me 5 stars” before driving away. I turned back to admire the house in front of me. It wasn’t anything lavish, just quite decent. Honestly, I expected something more from someone who is the son of one of the richest men in the country, but then again, it might look better on the inside.
I walked up to the front door with my suitcase in hand and my backpack slung around my shoulder. I rang the doorbell. No answer. I rang again. Still no answer. I rang it one last time, and someone finally answered after what felt like forever. The door opened. I was met with a tall man who wore a bandana around his eyes and an unzipped sweater, revealing he had no shirt on. I rolled my eyes at the sight of this.
“Look, I don’t want any girl scout cookies now, get lost,” he said in a deep, annoyed voice.
“Damn, what did the girl scouts ever do to you?” I retorted.
He looked down, realizing I am, in fact, not a girl scout. “W-what, Carmen?” His eyebrows raised with shock. “What are you doing here?”
“Okay, first of all, rude. I was expecting a better welcome than that. Second of all, you said I can move in with you.”
“Yeah, next Thursday. It’s Tuesday.”
“Long story but my ex decided to be an asshole, so now I’m here.” I shrugged
“Seriously?”
“Seriously. So that means I have to move in earlier than expected.”
He sighed. “Look, I’m sorry if this is earlier than you expected. I would’ve let you know, but my data isn’t exactly the best. I can stay at a hotel or something,” I said with a nervous smile, feeling a bit guilty.
Aaron sighed, letting out a slight chuckle. “No, it's okay. Come in.” He walked into the house, and I followed him, locking the door behind me. We entered the living room.
“Since you came earlier than I expected, you’re gonna have to sleep on the couch,” he stated as I dropped all of my bags on the floor.
“Alright, this place is
”
“Watch it, you’ll be staying here for a bit.”
“...cozy,” I finished, observing the traditional living room with brick walls and wooden furniture. As I looked around, I couldn’t help but notice there were no pictures, not even of his family. I remembered Aaron's rocky relationship with his parents. It was something we bonded over.
As I stared at the empty wall, my mind went back to a couple of years ago when my parents and I had a huge argument.
~
I had just gotten home, excited to share my decision with my parents. I had finally decided I wanted to move out. I thought they’d be proud of me for wanting to be independent.
I sat them down in the living room, heart pounding with anticipation. But it didn’t take long for things to unravel.
My mom’s face twisted in disapproval. “You won’t last a week on your own,” she said flatly. “You’ll be begging to come back.”
My dad’s reaction was even worse. His face darkened as his voice sharpened. “Ungrateful,” he spat. “After everything we’ve done for you, this is how you repay us?”
I couldn’t believe it. My chest tightened as frustration bubbled up. “You’re not even listening!” I cried, tears threatening to spill.
“We don’t have to listen to know it’s a bad idea,” Dad snapped, his tone laced with cold frustration. He’s been like this for as long as I can remember , quick to anger, impossible to please. I’ve spent my whole life walking on eggshells around him, terrified of setting him off. If you said something he didn’t like, you’d get the silent treatment for a week.
“We’re just being realistic,” my mom added, her voice sharp. “You won’t survive out there. You’ll come crawling back.” She’s always been quick to criticize, never to support. Whether it was a hobby, my appearance, style and my taste in men... though that one might actually be valid.
Don’t get me wrong, they’ve had their good moments when they were there for me. But moments like this made it hard to talk to them growing up.
This wasn’t the first argument I’d had with them, but it was the first time both of them were united against me like this. I thought they’d get over it in a week, maybe throw in a few passive-aggressive comments here and there. But I was wrong.
My dad’s expression hardened, his voice cold and cutting. "I've had enough of your nonsense," he said in Vietnamese, his words sharp as a knife. "You want to move out? Fine. Go live your life. But don’t you dare come crawling back when it all falls apart. And don’t ever talk to me or your mother again."
I stood there, frozen, tears streaming down my cheeks as they walked away. Out of all the fights we’ve had, this was the worst. I knew, deep down, that things would never be the same after this.
~
"Carmen?” Aaron's voice snapped me back into reality. I turned around and saw him holding the pillow and blanket he said he would bring earlier. “Are you okay? I've been calling your name for 15 minutes,” he said with concern.
“Yeah, I'm fine, just thinking,” I replied, not wanting to share what I was thinking about. It would only lead to questions I’m too tired to deal with.
“Are you sure?” he asked with concern.
“Mhm,” I simply replied, nodding.
“Okay,” he said slowly. “Well, here is your blanket and pillow.” He handed them to me. I looked down at the pillow and blanket with dinosaur print all over them. I looked up at Aaron with a confused expression on my face.
“Don’t ask.”
“Alright,” I said slowly, lightly tossing them onto the couch. “Thank you, you really didn’t have to.”
“Don’t worry about it. Plus, it's nice seeing you again. I haven’t seen you since middle school. You’ve grown a lot, and I’m proud of you for that and becoming your own person,” he said softly.
“You’re so cheesy,” I said, scrunching my nose, but relaxing into a smile. “But thank you, I really appreciate it,” I added. He smiled.
I stretched my arms in the air and let out a loud yawn. Aaron chuckled. “Tired?”
“Yeah, I barely got any sleep on the plane. I sat next to the washrooms and an arguing couple, it was entertaining, but I didn’t get any sleep,” I said, flopping onto the couch.
Aaron chuckled again. “You should really get some rest. If you need anything or have any questions, just ask me,” he said as he was about to go up the stairs.
“Wait, I have a question,” I called out, stopping him.
“Yes?”
“Why are you shirtless?”
He looked at me confused. “What?”
“Why aren’t you wearing a shirt? Did you lose it?”
“What do you mean? I am wearing a shirt.” Aaron said, looking down at himself.
“No, you are wearing an unzipped sweater with absolutely nothing underneath. If you are trying to look for girls, I don't think this is the right way..”
He rolled his eyes “Haha very funny” He picks up the pillow and chucks it at me before going back upstairs, leaving me on the couch dying of laughing.
~Carmen POV~
As I glanced at my phone to check the time, a heavy sigh escaped my lips. My Uber was supposed to be here ages ago, and I was getting impatient. I looked around, hoping to spot the car, but no luck. Just then, Florence's name flashed on my screen, and I answered.
"Hey," I greeted her.
"What's up, baby girl?" Flo said, trying to hold in a laugh.
I blinked, thrown off guard by her greeting. "I'm hanging up."
"No, no, no! I'm sorry," Flo backpedaled. I chuckled along with her.
"So, how was your flight?" she asked.
"Horrible," I groaned, launching into a tale of the flight from hell. "I sat next to the washrooms and a couple arguing, even though it was entertaining, I barely got any sleep ."
"Ugh, that sucks," Flor sympathized, her tone filled with genuine concern.
"Tell me about it," I agreed with a heavy sigh, still feeling the exhaustion of the journey. After a beat, Flo spoke up again.
"Listen, I'm sorry I couldn't offer you my place to crash, but with Angie and her pets coming over, it'd be way too cramped," Flo explained apologetically.
"It's cool, really," I reassured her, understanding her situation. "Moving here is probably for the best, and it's a nice change of scenery. How's living with Ms. Angelina, by the way?" I asked, genuinely curious about her new roommate.
"It's been nice," Flo replied with affection evident in her voice. "I've even become a morning person because of her. Waking up to her face every morning... I just love her so much."
"Aw, that's sweet... I hate you," I teased.
"Nooo, you love meee," Flo countered, her laughter ringing through the phone. I rolled my eyes.
"Have you told Aaron you'll be arriving earlier?" she asked
"Oh, shoot! I haven't. I will now," I exclaimed.
"Okay, be safe, alright? Text me when you can. Bye-" Before Flo could finish her sentence, the call abruptly cut off, leaving me staring at my phone screen in frustration. Glancing around, I realized I had no service. The airport Wi-Fi had failed me once again. With a resigned sigh, I pocketed my phone, bracing myself for the upcoming confrontation with Aaron.
As my Uber finally pulled up, I threw my bags in the trunk and settled into the backseat. Peering out the window, I couldn't help but hope that this move would be the new beginning I needed.
