i’ve had two celebrity deaths that have truly hurt me in my lifetime. vivienne westwood and david lynch. i thank my wonderful boyfriend for introducing me to his work this past year. i had no idea what i was getting myself into. i fell in love. i love the obscurity in his art and that hallow heart feeling after trying to understand even the slightest bit of his imagination.

rest in peace legend <3 can’t wait for generations to continue admiring ur creativity and talent

physical media *

for the last few years of my life i’ve become obsessed with collecting physical media. though i didn’t think it would become so big in this past year. at first i had only bought cds, and usually they were second hand. they were from artists i’d never heard of because this was a way of me finding new music. if i’m being honest that didn’t last long. i’d find myself basically judging them all from their cover. which was horrible in my case because lots of cds have cool covers but i’d find out the hard way that they were a christian band. :( and that’s just not what i look for in my music.

eventually i had luck and bought a cd with a cool cover and even cooler music. it was Foam by Divino Niño! i became obsessed and it helped me realize i should just thrift and purchase music that i love. and i did. i constantly would check out record stores and cd sections and thrift stores more often. some days the thrift gods were so on my side id completely freak out. out of the blue id find artists id love like sufjan stevens, fiona apple, and imogen heap! it’s way more exciting hunting for them then checking record stores for them. i wont lie some days id really want a specific cd and id search it up and get it since i knew i would appreciate having it in physical form.

i can say ive purchased well over 100 cds in the last 3 or 4 years. during those times ive found a really solid friend group in which we shared a love for movies. letterbox was getting really big and we would watch so many movies together and have movies nights over discord and give ratings on them. i think last year in october i watched 21 movies in that whole month. ot was amazing. with so much media being consumed so quickly on socials it really helped me slow down a lot. i loved it. within a few months i started dating my partner and i was so glad he shared the same love for movies like i did. we watched loads of them together and it just made my love for them grow even more. i then started searching for physical copies at thrift stores together now. whether it was a movie we’d watched and we loved or we saw it had an actor we liked or directed by someone we’d heard about we would buy it. well mainly me bc i loved having them in my collection. it grows so quickly. it’s so fun constantly checking to see what new finds there could be waiting and being able to watch them whenever we please. we realized that even though we pay for memberships and we have such easy accessibility to the internet it didnt necessarily mean that it was ours. how many times have you rewatched a show or movie and one day its just off of the streaming service. it sucks. but its been so much fun slowly collecting things to physically own and enjoy whenever we please.

thanks for reading my nonsense rant. i’ve been on a huge thrifting kick and wanted to express my love for all the stuff i’m into. physical media has definitely changed the way i appreciate art. can’t wait to continue collecting and sharing with those i love <3
