Eureka Anemos - The first FFXIV instance that I dislike
So I’ve been playing Final Fanrasy XIV constantly for the past 2 years and 3 months. I’ve loved every bit of content so farl, but I’ve finally met something that is just plain awful.
The newest instance called Eureka Anemos is an exploratory mission like the Diadem before it. The idea seemed nice: an independent level system like in Palace of the Dead and an elemental board to add more strategy to it. The idea sounds good, but the final product is terrible. which is sad because there’s a lot of potential, the area *looks* fantastic and the boss fates are fun.
But what is the Eureka we got? A mindless, extremely slow grind with mediocre rewards and terrible rng. It’s so repetitive and uneventful that after half an hour you just press buttons without using your brain anymore. Here’s the list of issues I have with this thing and how they could easily fix that
The regular monsters take either way too long to kill or give a laughable amount of XP. Essentially you can choose between being a small party and every equality leveled monster taking 4 minutes to kill or be a full party and get like 1-15 xp per monster. Attacking monsters that are more than like 3-4 levels will result in dying in sometimes a single auto-attack.
How I’d fix it: Lower HP, Bigger xp with less “dividing” between players. Make it so that it doesn’t take hours of standing in one place and spamming same three skills to level up.
The drop rate for crystals is just all over the place. Unless you have a perfect match-up with a full party of equally leveled players fighting a specific level of monsters, you barely get anything. One time I got 17 in 30 minutes, the other, while playing with a friend I got 4 in an hour while they got like 20. Considering the rewards require hundreds of them, this is just cruel.
How I’d fix it: Simple. Fix the RNG.
The rewards are mediocre. So there’s rewards from the mentioned crystals and then there’s lockboxes. The problem with the former: the rewards are gear that is worse than the Ryumyaku gear you get for getting mandacity tomes from *actually fun* things. And on top of that: they’re just the lv 70 job quest gear but dyable. The other one is lockboxes that you get from bosses and that’s where you have a chance of getting fun rewards like new gear, furniture, music, minion and mount. Of course it’s on an rng so most of the time you get fireworks. Not additional crystals or anything. Useless, single use fireworks. Might as well give a pic of a middle finger.
How I’d fix it: Give something more for crystals. Change fireworks to crystals.
It makes it hard to play with friends. So Eureka runs at an independent level system and pretty much everything depends on players’ and monsters’ levels. So if your friends have time and energy to play this for hours or simply started before you... well... you’re playing alone or with randoms which is also hard at lower levels. So unless you play this for countless hours and/or don’t have anything else to do all day: tough luck.
How I’d fix it: A level sync like that in Guild Wars 2 (adjust level to monsters in the area)

[Impressions] Gravity Falls
Xj xyplirqbiv xjxwfkd jxpqbomfbzb
WOO! I’m back from the blogging hiatus and it’s time for Czaros’ Game of the Year 2017 but first here’s something completely different.
So I’m late to the party but I and my sibling have finally watched through the entirety of Gravity Falls. And now I hugely regret that I haven’t done it sooner because this series is now my favorite non-anime show of all time (both animation and live-action included). This masterful cartoon series does so many amazing things that it’s hard to count.
Tumblr media
Gravity Falls absolutely *nails* the concept of being for everyone. It’s simple enough for kids to follow and enjoy but is also full of things for older audiences to enjoy with its enjoyable stories and more “mature” jokes and themes. It perfectly manages to not be childish in the slightest while also not being a gross “adult” cartoon. The writing in general is amazing. It has a lot of mystery and hints throughout but it is also a comedy at the same time and it let to me laughing out loud countless times. I haven’t had this much fun with a series in ages.
I absolutely love the world they created here. While I live in a small town and wish I could live in a bigger city due to all the possibilities it gives, my dream place would actually be something like Gravity Falls: a forest-y environment with hills, mountains, rivers and lakes and living in a log house. The world thy created is beautiful but of course I also enjoyed all the fantastical elements of it, with the only bad thing being that there are so many amazing things that could be there that you’ll never have enough.
But the world would be empty without some characters to fill with and I’m happy to say that there are many great, likeable characters here. The main duo of twins are great, each of them having their own personalities but getting along great. And since despite the 5 year difference between us, me and my sibling has always been getting along good as well almost always living together, the Pine twins made an even bigger impact on me and made me appreciate them even more. Gruncle Stan is a really nice character too, he is constantly trying to make money in bad ways but he is also very funny (in a big part due to the things he does) but he also cares for his family. (And he kinda looks like my grandpa). Even secondary characters like Soos and Wendy as well as other townsfolk are memorable.
Tumblr media
On the visual level, Gravity Falls excels as well. It has a nice art-style with nice character and creature design as well as some gorgeous background. It’s really refreshing in the time where so many animations are just cheap flash animations.
Each episode was a joy to watch. The first season had more standalone stories with each episode while the second had a pattern of one story-progressing and one “standalone” episode. This 40 episode series brought joy and excitement with each episode. The three episode finale actually made both me and my sibling teary-eyed towards the final scene and of course as soon as it was over, I just felt that I want to see more of it and I’m actually hoping that there’ll be something more in the future.
So, to sum it all up: Gravity Falls is a masterpiece. Thank you Alex Hirsch and the team for making this series and I’m looking forward to whatever you make next. And now it’s time to enjoy Journal 3 which I just got and its quality exceeded my expectations.

[Review] Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp (Mobile)
DAY 6
Animal Crossing is a series really close to my heart and my biggest concern about the mobile iteration was that it would be a town building game… And apparently my fears were justified as the original idea was just that. But luckily, it got scrapped and instead we got, what is in my opinion, the best mobile game of 2017.
Tumblr media
Once you invite an animal to your campsite, they’ll be able to stay there forever.
The shortest way to describe the game is Animal Crossing Lite but honestly, that’s not really it. Sure, the aspects like decorating with furniture, buying clothes, collecting fruit and catching fish and bugs are still there but the rest is quite different. Like in many mobile games, there’s experience, levels and two types of currency. You level up by raising Friendship Levels with animals by doing requests for them (aka bringing items) or talking to them. Doing that grants you friendship points and resources. Those resources are used to craft furniture and other items. The goal of the game is to raise friendships and invite animals to stay at your campsite. To achieve that you have to hit a certain friendship level and craft a set of furniture they ask for.
Visually, the game looks great. It’s basically the first Animal Crossing in HD (amiibo festival doesn’t count) and it looks nice. Textures are nice and high-res and models looks great. I kinda wish they used the same kind of shading and ground texture as New Leaf but it is fine either way. The music is good, it has a typical AC feeling to it.
Tumblr media
Beau is one of the most liked animals in Pocket Camp and for a good reason. He’s super adorable.
The gameplay is good and addicting. All the mechanics work nicely on mobile. Crafting furniture is, as expected, taking real-life minutes and hours to complete but so far it hasn’t been too bad. Times vary from a minute to many hours but it’s bearable. You can of course use the secondary currency to speed things up. That currency is also used for things like special items or going to a quarry that can also be unlocked by asking 5 friends for help. You can add friends via friend code, Twitter or Facebook and then visit their campsites or trade items with them via market boxes. You can decorate both your campsite and your camper and you can buy clothes and certain furniture using bells at a market place that changes products every few hours (6?).
To be fair, the game isn’t that full of content but it is going to grow and for a free mobile game that isn’t *too* greedy when it comes to forcing you into microtransactions, it is good enough. In fact, there’s already a few new villagers added.
To sum it up: Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is an amazing, pretty, cute and addictive mobile iteration of a series that’s dear to me. This was the one I really didn’t want Nintendo to screw up and they didn’t. Whoever you are, you should download and play this game NOW.

[Mini-review] Fire Emblem: Heroes (Mobile)
DAY 5
Tumblr media
I never really got into Fire Emblem even though I like its turn-based strategy gameplay style so I didn’t really play that much of Heroes either but I played enough to say that it’s a really good mobile version of the franchise. It’s essentially a lite version of Fire Emblem, with similar gameplay but simplified into smaller maps and more accessible battle system. Commanding units fits touch screen controls perfectly.
When it comes to presentation, the game got a nice art style with high-quality character art and more chibi-esque overworld and battle sprites. The music is nice and there’s even quite a bit of voice acting with different heroes having different voice actors. The only issue I have with the presentation is that sometimes the alternative hero looks can get a little too much of a fan-service, especially for a Nintendo game.
The game is still growing with more content such as maps and characters being added quite frequently. As you could easily guess, it’s a gacha game, meaning that it uses a system where you spend secondary in-game currency to “summon” new random heroes so it’s all up to chance. This is of course always a system that is meant to make you open your wallet and essentially gamble but while it’s still a bad thing, at least this is a free-to-play game so I’ll let it pass without dragging down the score too much.
Overall, Fire Emblem Heroes is a great game for fans and people new to the franchise alike.

[Mini-review] GoNNER (Switch)
DAY 4 (Didn’t have time to write yesterday. Whoops)
GoNNER is a rouge-like, side-scrolling indie shooter game on Nintendo Switch. I got this game mostly because I like rogue-like games and the strange audiovisual style of it seemed interesting. In GoNNER, you play as a strange creature called Ikk who can equip different heads, items and guns, all of which have different effects. The goal of the game is to kill enemies and get to the next level.
The game has a simple but nice artstyle and bizarre music and sounds which give it a quite unique look. The gameplay works well and is easy to learn, hard to master. It is simple and maybe even too simple as it often feels like much more could have been done. It also feels like the game could have much more content as replaying it over and over feels somehow way more repetitive than most other rogue-likes I played. The daily challenge still doesn’t have a leaderboard, which is a shame cause that’s the point of it.
Overall, it’s a pretty good game with lots of unused potential. For its price, it’s mostly worth it though.

[Review] ARMS (Switch)
DAY 2
Tumblr media
ARMS is a game that I’m very conflicted about. When I initially tried the online demo, I thought it was awful. Then in the second demo that took place post-release I actually had fun and seeing my friend play it convinced me to buy it.
ARMS is a 3D arena fighting game with a unique twist. Instead of typical melee fighting, your ARMS extend far which turns the game into a ranged fighting game instead. Every character can equip one of many different kinds of arms for each hand and those vary in how they fly, behave and hit. This makes for a pretty varied experience, even with the same characters.
Visually the game is good. Nothing fancy, but not bad looking either. The audio is fine as well. The main theme is extremely catchy but the rest of the music, while good, isn’t especially remarkable or memorable. There’s some voice acting but it’s mostly just random lines which is a shame because real voice lines could give the characters more personality. Character design is *in my opinion* a mixed bag. Some characters are good, others a bit generic and Mechanica looks like a Tracer, Mei and D.Va fusion.
When it comes to gameplay: it’s solid. It’s a simple concept that for the most part works well. You have punches that you can aim, grabbing your opponent, guarding, dodging and a special “rush” attack. Different characters have some sort of own ability as well. There’s a few match types: fight, team fight, v-ball, hoops and skillshot. V-ball is bad but the other modes are great.  There’s also a few game modes: Grand Prix is your typical arcade mode with 7 difficulties and an ending for each character. Versus, where you can freely choose what to play. Party Match which is random, unranked online matches. Finally there’s ranked matches and playing with friends. It sounds like much, but it honestly isn’t enough content for the price.
The controls work pretty well. There’s multiple control schemes and you can even remap buttons. There’s however some problems I encountered with every control scheme I use: with motion everything is better but grabbing doesn’t work well while in normal controls, you often grab by accident and aiming is hard. Overall though it works great but I often feel like mashing buttons works best.
Online play isn’t anything special but what there is, works well enough, unlike in Splatoon. There’s also a lot you can do solo or play multiplayer on the same console, again, unlike Splatoon. There is however one major flaw that drags this game down quite a bit and it’s the price. This is a game with a pretty average roster size and when it comes to it it’s just the same fighting over and over again. This should have been a $30 game, not a full $60 game like Odyssey and BOTW.
In conclusion: ARMS is a pretty good game, with good gameplay and for the most part great controls. It is however still not worth the price. There just isn’t enough to it. If you find it for a cheaper price, it’s a must have if you like this type of game.

[Review] Hiveswap Act 1 (PC)
DAY 1
As the year 2017 is near its end, I think it’s time to look back at the year in gaming. It had an extraordinary amount of great games. While I’m planning to do a massive Game of the Year 2017 feature sometime in January, I have decided to do a little Advent Calendar with a short review of a 2017 game I played per day, starting with Hiveswap Act 1.
Tumblr media
Hiveswap is a long-awaited game in the world of the famous webcomic Homestuck, which concluded this year. After a very successful Kickstarter campaign, the development of the game was full of major problems but now it’s finally here with Act 1.
Hiveswap is a 1990s style point and click adventure game with beautiful hand-drawn visuals and music by Toby Fox, the creator and composer for Undertale and well as the composer of many tracks for Homestuck. Together with James Roach, they brought some great music as expected. As with most point and click adventure games in the 1990s, the main gameplay is clicking on things to interact, collect and use items and solve puzzles. The game does this really faithfully. You should however be ready for a lot of text and written dialogue as the game doesn’t feature voice acting, but if you’ve read Homestuck, you probably won’t mind that anyway. Speaking of writing: that’s where the biggest strength of the game lies. The witty humor of Homestuck is back, be it with less “bad language” and no use of copyrighted images but it’s still great. I spent good 10 minutes just checking out all the 90s references in the main character’s room. Overall, the gameplay is very basic but that’s typical for the genre and it works well.
There are however some downsides too. First of all, even if this is just Act 1, the game is way too short. I finished it in about three hours and I was taking my time to check out everything. It can take longer if you want to get all the achievements, but it’s still pretty short. The other issue I had, at least when I played it near release is some graphical glitches here and there but other than that, it was a solid experience. I can however understand if you found it to be disappointing, since for a project so hyped up and delayed multiple times, this isn’t much… *yet*! My hope is that it is a beginning of something amazing.

[Review] - SteamWorld Dig 2
How to make a perfect sequel
Tumblr media
(Reviewed version: Switch)
I’m a big fan of Image & Form and the SteamWorld series. I have the original Dig on all available platforms and Heist on 3DS, PC and PS4. Naturally, this means I was much hyped for Dig 2 and had high expectations. But did it live up to the hype?
 Story:
The game takes place shortly after the events of the original SteamWorld Dig. Dorothy, one of the residents of Tumbleton set out to search for Rusty who went missing after the final battle of Dig. The story isn’t anything too big or deep but it’s enough to keep you invested and even has some few unexpected twists.
Tumblr media
Presentation:
The SteamWorld series always had nice graphics and artstyle and Dig 2 continues this trend. In fact, SteamWorld Dig 2 looks even better than its predecessor with better sprites, environments and effects. The game looks great in both handheld and TV modes, with the latter having some extra effects and higher resolution (1080p). It maintains a stable 60 fps as well which in my opinion is a very important aspect.
The music is once again great. Since the game is bigger than the original, so is the soundtrack. Each area has a different music track and each and one of them are a pleasure to listen to and add to the atmosphere of the game. No, it is not the greatest soundtrack this year, nor is it the most memorable, but it is definitely good.
Gameplay:
The original SteamWorld Dig combined Metroidvania elements with mining with a randomized mine going a long way down and some pre-made mini-levels with puzzles and platforming. Dig 2 continues with that style (though the main mines are more/completely pre-made now) and expands the world with the mines stretching both vertically and horizontally, being divided into several areas. There’s even an overworld above ground now.
The main concept of the game is to venture into the mines below to progress the story, collect resources and sell them to get money to buy better versions of your tools. You’ll also get access to several new abilities in the mines (that can also be upgraded later). A new addition is Upgrade Cogs, which can be used to install additional abilities. This adds more depth and customization as you can freely choose which abilities you want or do not want to use. Some of them can even make the game more challenging. The cogs can be found throughout the game’s world, often in some of the numerous secret areas and mini-levels.
Tumblr media
Speaking of secrets and mini-levels: there’s a lot of them this time around and the percentage of discovered ones is now displayed for each area and tallied at the end of the game. These areas can contain rare resources, the previously mentioned cogs and artifacts, which are items mostly from the “old world”. These can be traded in for new ability blueprints and each of the artifacts has some clever and humoristic description and look. I personally always loved games with secrets and collectibles so this is something I’m really glad to see here since it also adds to the length of the game if you’re a completionist.
Even on the technical plane SteamWorld Dig 2 excels. The controls feel great and can even be remapped if you want. The gameplay is solid. I didn’t encounter even a single glitch and never felt like something was wrong. Even in terms of design the game is very good. All areas are well designed with good platforming challenges and clever puzzles.
There really isn’t much that isn’t great in SWD2. The only complaint I have is that even with the bigger world and secrets and artifacts to find, the game is still kind of short. I finished it in 7 hours with 58% of secrets found but also as much as 12 hours with 100% so you can make it last long. However, there’s also a lot of replay value as you might want to speedrun, get all four stars at the end or play with the difficulty raising abilities. It could be extended even further if Switch had achievements but that’s Nintendo’s fault, not Image and Form’s
Tumblr media
Artifacts are worth getting just for the descriptions alone
Verdict
SteamWorld Dig 2 is a sequel to an already great game that manages to be bigger and better in every aspect. It’s a great looking game with amazing music and nearly perfect gameplay. It’s a must have for any Switch, PS4 and PC owner.

[Review] - Splatoon 2
Same old fun, same old flaws
(Note that this was originally a script for a video review, not a written one)
The original Splatoon was easily my favorite and most played game on Wii U. It wasn’t perfect. In fact, if it was any other shooter, it would probably get torn apart due to its really bad design choices and abysmal online play quality. However, the original and fun gameplay as well as the style of the game made it a massive success. So how is the sequel?
Presentation
Tumblr media
Visually, Splatoon 2 is slightly better looking than the original, with the lighting and ink looking much better for example. The difference isn’t too big though but the game still looks very good. One thing I noticed however is that sometimes the anti-aliasing is very bad. I also personally think that the multiplayer stages don’t look as colorful and unique as the original, but that’s just me. The game runs at a stable 60 fps (with the exception of Inkopolis Square which is locked at 30) which is always a great and appreciated thing to have.
When it comes to music and sound, Splatoon 2 continues what Splatoon 1 started by having an awesome soundtrack with many new, great tracks. The multiplayer tracks are in my opinion slightly less memorable compared to the original, but Salmon Run and Hero Mode songs are where the soundtrack really shines.
Gameplay
I’m going to talk about each mode individually. Please note that I was unable to test the local multiplayer mode, as that sadly cannot be played on one console, which actually made me quite disappointed before I even opened the game.
What can be said about all modes in general is that the controls are great and I’m especially impressed by the motion controls. Shooters are in my opinion one of the few genres where playing with a controller is terrible. Motion controls are the closest to being as good as keyboard and mouse, but the Wii U Gamepad’s motion controls weren’t too great and required recalibrating every 10 seconds or so. The joy-cons don’t have this problem at all. I can play for a long time without having to recalibrate. The only problem I had was at the very beginning due to the infamous controller desync. But as long as I sit quite close and without anything obstructing the dock at all, the desync problem is solved.
Amiibos can be once again be used, with three new ones added just for Splatoon 2. They unlock a set of clothes, a song for the rhythm mini-game and you can also take a picture with your inkling and the amiibo character.
The rhythm mini-game I mentioned is Squid Beats 2, which is a much improved version of the original. You can play all songs in the game in two difficulties in what is now pretty much a fully-fledged rhythm game.
Tumblr media
Hero Mode is this game’s single player campaign. It’s in many ways similar to Hero Mode in original Splatoon. Your goal is once again to go through numerous stages to get a zapfish at the end of each, defeating enemies and overcoming obstacles on the way to the end. After completing all levels in each area, you fight a boss and can proceed to the next area afterwards. Each level contains a sunken scroll and an item used to upgrade your gear. Hero Mode is equally as long as the original, but there’s added replay value thanks to one pretty big change from the original Hero Mode. Throughout your adventure, you’ll unlock new weapons to use and each level can be replayed with every weapon you unlock. Completing all levels with one weapon unlocks it for multiplayer.
Gameplay-wise, Hero Mode is wonderful, if not still too short. Story-wise, Hero Mode isn’t that great. I wasn’t expecting a great story mind you but with all the pre-release build-up and Marie’s appearance, I honestly expected more. The original had quite some interesting lore behind it and a stunning final boss battle. Without spoiling anything, I’m just gonna say that they missed an opportunity for something quite good and instead with the easiest way.
Tumblr media
Salmon Run is a brand new PvE game mode and is easily the best addition to the series and the most fun game mode in Splatoon 2. There’s only one thing that I just can’t understand what the developers were thinking. The game mode has opening hours which means that it isn’t playable at all times. The mode is available for 24 hours and then closed for somewhere between 20-28 hours. Why would you limit the best thing in the game?
Anyway, Salmon Run is a mode where 4 players fight waves of Salmon enemies and have to gather a number of golden eggs by defeating Salmoid bosses. Each boss requires a different strategy to beat. This mode requires team work and the only thing that drags it down is the lack of proper communication, which ironically the game itself mentions is a key element. Another issue with this mode is that if your friend is on a higher rank, they will not gain experience when playing with you, but will still lose points if you’re defeated, discouraging playing with friends. The mode can also sometimes get way too overwhelming with enemy waves that are pretty much impossible to counter
PvP Multiplayer
Tumblr media
The main attraction of the game is the Player vs Player battles. Turf Wars is an unranked match all about inking in the most turf. Ranked Battles are competitive matches in three modes: Splat Zones where you have to control a zone of a map, Tower Control where you control a tower as it moves to a goal and Rainmaker which is like Capture the Flag if the flag was also a weapon. Then there’s League Battles where you team up with friends and play competitive modes in a more tournament-esque fashion, without ranks. You can also play Private Battles with friends: any mode, any map and any number of players. Last and definitely least is Online Lounge, which is private battles with voice chat using the abomination that is the Nintendo Switch Online app on smartphones.
So let’s start with the good things. The online match quality is quite a bit better: there’s less lag and disconnects happen quite rarely though matches ending in 4v3 and never ending lobbies due to communication errors for other players still happen quite frequently. The gameplay is just as good as in the original with some tweaks. In fact it almost seems like most of the game was just copy pasted from the Wii U game. The new things are a new weapon type: the dualies, new secondary and special weapons and new maps and that’s pretty much everything that’s new.
Now onto the bad things and there’s quite a few, ranging from minor annoyances to big issues. The map rotation system is still a bad system that should not exist, you cannot group up with friends before a match. You have to join after one of them enters a match, in turf war, whether you’ll play with or against your friends is purely random. You cannot play ranked with friends, even though you could in the original. Voice chat not only requires usage of an awfully designed mobile app with terrible chat quality, not only is it friend only… It also is limited to private battles only (and private Salmon Runs), making it completely useless. The previously mentioned disconnects leading to uneven teams do not affect your matches so you’ll still lose your rank in ranked battles.
And that’s all the problems. Most of them aren’t game breaking, but are still pretty big for an online game, especially considering we are supposed to be paying for online soon. It kind of feels as if the developers never played an online game before.
Verdict
Overall, Splatoon 2 is a really good game with a lot of lost potential and bad design decisions. Aside from the new Salmon Run mode there isn’t really anything new aside from new maps and gear. Asking $60 for it is a little much, but the game is definitely worth getting even with its big flaws.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Splatoon 2 gets a 7/10 and a GOLD Czaros’ Seal of Approval (More about it in a separate post). The latter is based on the amount of fun I had with the game while the standard score is based on the quality of the game.

Here’s a short explanation of the Czaros Seal of Approval I’ll be putting in my reviews. While playing games I noticed that sometimes the quality of the game doesn’t reflect how good of an experience a game was for me. Sometimes a game that on a techincal level is bad can still be a good experience and a great game can be a poor experience. This “seal of approval” is based on how good the game was as an experience. No seal means it was bad, bronze is ok, silver is good, gold is great, platinum is wonderul and diamond is only for games that became very special to me.

Decided to finish the main story of Final Fantasy XV. The ending made me cry. No matter what anyone says, I really enjoyed this game throughout. I don’t care if the game has “lacking story”, because in my opinion it is the journey and the story you yourself create and the bond between the four main characters is what made it great and the ending really shows that.

The Moogle Chocobo Carnival is really cute. I love everything about it: the photo quests, catching small chocobos, Noct’s awkward and shy dancing with the moogle/chocobo, the decorations and the firework show. It’s all so cute
